Few pieces are as simple and straightforward as this, while still providing an array of choices for how it can be performed. Written with 3 sung lines (mixed or equal voices) that are repeated, the effect can be quiet and intimate or strong and determined—or a combination! Performance suggestions are in the printed music, but listening to the recording (Walk in Peace, CD-908) will spark your imagination with even more possibilities. This intense and emotional work was commissioned by the Indiana Music Educators Association and was premiered at the 2011 IMEA Convention with the composer conducting. Written as a gift to longtime friend of music education, Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, the piece is basically lyrical in nature with beautiful lines and colors. A brief faster section, in the words of the composer, “describes that uncomfortable time when we are desperately trying to find ourselves.” The piece ends on a solemn yet reaffirming note, reminding us of the importance of guides and mentors along life's pathway. Duration: 5:00.

Commissioned by the Grassfield High School Band in Chesapeake, Virginia, and dedicated to the graduating class of 2011, the title and nature of this work reference the various pathways chosen, and those yet to be taken, in all of our lives. Michael Oare's rich and expressive composition uses a nice blend of tempos and styles to create a dynamic, well-scored overture for young players. Dur: 4:00.

This bassoon concerto was written in 2013. It is an epic story in seven movements where we follow the bassoon from darkness to light. It is a life-quest journey which is an expression of personal experiences. The movements are: Searching, On The Move, Resting, A New Dawn, Entering The Light, At A Crossroad and On The Foot-path To Happiness. The concerto wanders through a wide variety of experiences and feelings. The main character, represented by the bassoon, starts in a depressed state of darkness, where very encounter with anything even remotely light or beautiful almost increases the feeling of despair (Searching). Then, a spark of anger is born which takes us on to the second movement (On The Move). This feeling takes the character forward, and out or depressive numbness. In the third movement (Resting) the character can finally rest, but still with an underlying feeling of sadness and loneliness, and it is not until the fourth movement (A New Dawn) that the bassoon starts to live a little, which leads into a more peaceful experience (Entering The Light). After that the character needs to ponder over where to go next (At A Crossroad), and finally in the seventh slightly mad movement (On The Footpath To Happiness), the character can live to the full, finding his way in this ever changing world.

What does the life of a lone warrior look like? What stories does he or she have to tell? This piece for beginning band depicts a lone warrior beginning a journey across an ancient land. This solitary warrior is joined by others on the way, and together they defend those who cannot defend themselves. Each warrior might have a different story and experience, and I would encourage young musicians to create their own through sharing verbally, writing a short story, or even creating a work of art (a picture depicting their warrior or creating a mask their warrior wears might aid in the telling of their warrior’s story). The Warrior’s Path is about one minute and twenty seconds in length, and the technical range (first six notes of the Bb concert scale) should be very comfortable for a student in their second semester of instrumental music instruction. There are some articulations indicated, but overall musicians should strive for a unified even articulation. Throughout the work, the snares should be turned off or directors can choose to substitute with a low concert tom. The piece can be performed with as few as five winds (e.g. Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet and Trombone) and just four percussion (suggested Bells, Snare, Cymbal and Tambourine). The piece began as a flexible chamber piece during the summer of 2020 but has been reorchestrated for use by a full band in a traditional setting. It is my hope the piece provides a meaningful opportunity for students to tell a story through music and other creative outlets. The piece is dedicated to elementary band directors who have fought for their students and their programs each and every day. In their own way, they have been warriors of a different kind using a baton as their sword and their passion for music education and their students as a shield. Thank you in advance for your support of this music, and I wish you and your ensemble well as you take The Warrior’s Path.

From the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, Path to the Pacific reflects the open, airy and picturesque qualities of the American West. These textures are painted through the use of light syncopation, key modulations and triplets that will certainly ch.From the opening driving cello melody to the final ensemble flourish, Path to the Pacific is an exciting and rewarding piece for young players to play. The accents in the cello during the lively introduction at m. 1 are integral to the feel of the melodic line and provide an engaging technical challenge. The AAB form begins as the piece decrescendos to the quiet ‘A’ section at m. 9, featuring violin 1 with a singing, lyrical melody. The robust, joyous ‘B’ section is played with intensity, but still legato. The return to the ‘A’ material at m. 37 features the Cello. The 2nd statement of the ‘B’ material at m. 45 is highlighted by a refreshing tonal shift to the key of E then back to the key of ‘G’ before the crescendo to the fermata in m. 58.The active cello theme from the introduction returns in the A Tempo section at m. 59 at a piano dynamic. This begins the build to the maestoso section at m. 71. Measures 63-70 are the most aggressive bars of the composition. Strive for rhythmic precision when approaching the quintal harmony in m. 63-64, the accented figures in m. 65-67, and the triplet figures in m. 68-69. A rich, resonant tone from the full ensemble will make the maestoso section in m. 71 move powerfully to the final bar.

A beautiful and lush ballad that features the ensemble is a rare gem at this level and David Samuel has crafted an elegant example with The Path Left Behind. Smooth, flowing lines that seamlessly melt together create a wonderful sonic landscape. There is a solo for Tenor Sax that is supported by the rhythm section and tasteful brass writing. This is a sophisticated chart that will showcase the dramatic aspects of the whole ensemble.
