Sappho * Fragments for women's chorus, flute and cello (1997) was commissioned by the Arbeitskreis fur Musik in der Jugend for the project KomponistInnen schreiben fur Kinder und Jugendchore. Thus the use of flute and cello in this work for women's choir is intended to assist intonation. According to Hiller the two instruments may also represent the aulos and lyre, the instruments which in classical antiquity accompanied the declamation of poems. He writes about the ancient Greek poetess: With her verses Sappho, who lived on the Aegean island of Lesbos, has for thousands of years inspired poets, visual artists and composers to create new works of art. In our time, for example, Aribert Reimann, Wilhelm Killmayer, Iannis Xenakis and Carl Orff have composed monuments in sound to her. The fragments of her verses which survive give rise to speculation about what is missing, to new interpretations, and to the idea of filling the gaps with music. What also fascinates me in Sappho's texts are the glowing eroticism, their iridescent glitter, and their constant high tension. These poems must be sung, especially by women, to whom Sappho dedicated most of these beautiful lines.

The Evening Service grew out of the celebrations of the one thousandth anniversary of the consecration of St Michael’s Church in Hildesheim, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. For many years St Michael’s has celebrated the service of Choral Evensong, the rich musical conjunction of the divine offices of vespers and compline, which is so familiar within the Anglican tradition. In the Catholic daily office of evening prayer, particularly in the Cologne version of choral vespers, the Magnificat of Mary and Simeon’s Nunc dimittis from chapters 1 and 2 of Luke are also set to music. Both pieces explore the text, and they can be sung independently of each other – both in worship and in concert – and yet they are connected through individual motifs and the shared doxology.

The music chosen for this recording is strangely and poignantly relevant, I believe, for each of us. “The Fruit of Silence†by PÄ“teris Vasks reminds us to visit those beliefs that are most sacred in the work by Cortlandt Matthews. A deeply personal Requiem by Peter Relph, in reflection, remembers the hundreds of thousands of lives lost in the pandemic. And then there is Thomas LaVoy’s “O Great Beyond.†All great texts are timeless and speak to the universality of the human condition. Particularly, the George Fox text set by Jackson Hill and the Tagore text set by LaVoy give us messages to reinforce the humanness of each of us for hope. Two other works on this recording poignantly remind us of the passing of life, with the Relph Requiem and especially the final movement of “O Great Beyond.†May these words give comfort to all those who endured the deepest of Life’s losses during our shared pandemic journey. For so many loved ones, goodbyes were said in silence, and alone. It is our hope that all the music on this CD will show us a way for living as we move forward and also give loving comfort to those who have lost loved ones. Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet. Let it not be a death but completeness. Let love melt into memory and pain into songs. A Grateful Tail - Movement by Movement Siriusly, Dog Star Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, has been used by travelers and navigators for thousands of years as a guiding star and so it is here as the opening movement for the symphony. Sirius, the cornerstone to the constellation Canis Maggiore or Big Dog sits at the foot of Orion, the hunter, leading the way. Highly cinematic, the movement evokes both a musical and visual sense of the mythological and mysterious elements of Sirius and its Dog Godstar secrets. From the clarion call of the opening, Sirius theme, the sound is buoyant and frisky emulating the nature of doggy playtime. Puppy pleasures abound as a doggy four-step, my turn on the traditional American two-step dance, is introduced. The movement transforms into an actual orchestrated frolic of small, large and medium dog barks beginning with the winds (smaller dogs) and ultimately, the big dog, brass. The movement climaxes with the coda or, Dog Park, where the winds and the brass bark and play together over the, doggy ostinato four-step rhythm, culminating with the final call of the Sirius theme. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, Peacefully It's all in a dog's day and life. Tranquility presides over this supremely gentle, intermezzo-like movement. After a day of play, every dog needs rest. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, is a lyrical andante inspired by the profound serenity and beauty of a dog at rest. The Last Will and Testament of Silverdene Emblem O'Neill Based on a powerful piece of prose written by the American playwright, Eugene O'Neill this text was intended as a consolation piece for Carlotta, his wife, who had become grief-stricken over the loss of their beloved dog, the Dalmatian known as Blemie.Written for a singing actor who personifies the role of Blemie, a dog at the end of his life, the movement plays like a one act, musical drama as we follow Blemie through a wonderfully three-dimensional, emotional and psychological journey writing his Last Will and Testament, for those who have loved him. Wagging the Tail: Ossia Fido's Lament A life-affirming rumba/samba using Blemie's final words from O'Neill's text, this final movement employs the most unique American musical invention, the gospel choir. In order to make the dances come alive, this movement also calls upon the colors of a rhythm section. Often called the Ellis Island of the West, Angel Island in San Francisco was used as an immigration station in the first half of the 20th century, processing some one million Asian immigrants. Because of U.S. policy of the time, many spent years on Angel Island awaiting entry. Recently named a National Historical Landmark, Angel Island and its history is the inspiration behind Chen Yi's Angel Island Passages, commissioned by the San Francisco Girls Chorus. Chen explores the experiences of the immigrants, even using poems carved in the walls, to express the mood, the patient yearning, and the ultimate release and embrace of a new country. Angel Island Passages was premiered June 4-5, 2010 by the SFGC and the Cypress String Quartet at the San Francisco Conservatory. For advanced performers. Duration: 15'.Commissioned by San Francisco Girls Chorus (Executive Director Melanie Smith), and premiered by the SFGC and Cypress String Quartet on June 4, 2010, conducted by SFGC’s Artistic Director Susan McMane, at San Francisco Conservatory, CA, the 3-movement song cycle Angel Island Passages is written for children’s chorus and string quartet, with multimedia projection on the walls of the concert hall, produced by visual artist Felicia Lowe. The creative idea of this work was initiated by Dr. McMane, who invited me to write the music, and sent me the book “Island, poetry and history of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940â€, by Him Mark Lai, Genny Lim, and Judy Yung for reference in 2009; also inspired by the Angel Island stories, and through cooperation with Felicia, who shared with me her film “Carved in Silence†and video productions “Chinatown†and “Road to Restorationâ€.I named the first movement of my work as “1882â€, which reflected the dark mood under the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The collective poems carved on the wooden walls in Angel Island expressed deep emotion in sorrow and anxiety. The music in the second movement “Longing†is sad and sentimental. The third movement is called “We Are Americaâ€, which is ever-moving, energetic and optimistic. The text sung in the beginning in Chinese means “I am an Americanâ€. It’s sung in Cantonese dialect, then in Mandarin. As the music develops, from homophonic to polyphonic with increasing layers, the climax is reached when the text is turned to English “We Are Americaâ€, which symbolizes the flourishing society with the great contribution from thousands of immigrants during the years. The music fades out towards the ending of the work, which pushes the scene to a remote picture, to look forward to the future peace of the world.I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with such inspiring creative artists in this project, and hope the work is meaningful to our new society after the premiere performance.—Chen Yi.

Eric Thiman (1900-1975) was a British composer and organist. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music and at the University of London, and was organist at the City Temple in London for many years. He wrote over a thousand works, of which several hundred were published during his lifetime, mostly anthems, chorales and chamber works. About half of his Organ music was based on British hymn tunes.

Stephansdom is a new composition, descriptive of the iconic St. Stephan's Cathedral in central Vienna. Ryan Diefendorfer wrote this work for the Indiana University Trombone Ensemble for Bass Trombone solo and Trombone Choir (6-part) to be performed by Carl Lenthe at the 2012 Eastern Music Festival. Ryan's work was awarded the winner of the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop National Composition Competition.St. Stephen's Cathedral, also known as Stephansdom, is one of Vienna's most remarkable city icons. Dating back to 1137, Stephandsom towers above the rest of Vienna's skyline and has been a constant presence in the lives of the Viennese for nearly one thousand years. Among the buildings that the Viennese find closest to their hearts, Stephansdom is certainly one of themI. GroundbreakingThe first movement depicts the troubles that St. Stephen's Cathedral had in getting its groundbreaking as a church. The opening of the piece marks the celebration of the Viennese when St. Stephen's was first constructed in 1137, during the Romanesque era. However, the church faced many issues—from being destroyed by the Babenberg Empire to being decimated by a fire—before the church began its construction in the Gothic style in 1307. The first movement depicts these struggles before resolving to an open chord.II. StefflSteffl, the nickname for Stephansdom's soaring north tower, is one of the characteristics of the cathedral that the Viennese find so endearing. This movement is very upbeat and is meant to portray the excitement shared by the Viennese for this beautiful addition to Stephansdom, which was completed in 1433. Stephansdom's north tower is the tallest structure in Vienna, and distinctly stands out within Vienna's skyline.III. 1945As World War II was coming to a close in 1945, Stephansdom's roof caught fire from a neighboring building, destroying large portions of the church. One climax occurs at m.30, which depicts Stephansdom's great bell, the Pummerin, crashing down to the ground. This movement depicts the chaotic nature of the raging fire of 1945.IV. Anton PilgrimAnton Pilgrim was the last, and perhaps most beloved, architect who worked on St. Stephen's Cathedral in the Gothic style. One of his most famous projects was the St. Stephen's organ loft, which is depicted by an opening organ-like canon. The final movement to the piece ends in a chorale-like fashion, demonstrating the Viennese's love for Anton Pilgrim, as well as Stephansdom, one of Vienna's most iconic sights.This work of 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.
