Three Way Suite

Max Reger composed his Three Suites for Violoncello solo in 1914/15 for three important cellists and teachers of the time: Julius Klengel, Hugo Becker and Paul Grümmer. Klengel was also friends with the composer. Reger humorously told him of his Opus 131c in summer 1915, calling them 'strapping triplets?. He asked the cellist to 'use these three things as often as possible in your lessons?, although they presuppose a great degree of skill on the students' part. For all those who wish to conquer these works in theory, we are now also offering our Urtext edition of the Suites (HN 478) as a study score. / Violoncelle

The music of Handel is considered the culmination of the Baroque period of music history, and his Water Music (1717) has endured in popularity for nearly 300 years! Performed from a barge traveling on the River Thames, King George I is said to have liked the music so much that he ordered it repeated several times. Originally three suites each consisting of multiple movements, Johnnie Vinson has skillfully adapted this arrangement for young players using ?Alla Hornpipe? from the Suite in D Major, and the ?Air? and ?Allegro? from the Suite in F Major.

Par TOMASI HENRI. Suite is a piece for three Bb or C Trumpets composed by Henri Tomasi in 1964. This unusual suite lasts approximately 8'30 minutes. It is divided into three main parts: 1. Havanaise at a Tempo di Habanera, 2. Lento egeen and 3. Danse Bolivienne. The Havanaise is made of a danse part and a more melodious one. Its dialogue in between the Trumpets creates a counterpoint. In the second part, the three instruments alternate the theme with small variations and the last part, ; 3. Danse Bolivienne, is a toccata. This book features score and parts for Bb and C Trumpets. HenriTomasi was a French composer, conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927. Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the ‘Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare’ (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the ‘Sint Martinusfanfare’ from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin, a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin, who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement, the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. Thecontrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement, Allegro Molto Vivace’, could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis, the crown on the pastoral work of Martin, Bishop of Tours, Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Fanfare

GEORGE WASHINGTON SUITE is made up of three tunes known to have been composed for (or about) George and Martha Washington in their own time. Probably the best known of the three is the first movement, WASHINGTON’S GRAND MARCH, which is believed to have been written by Francis Hopkinson. He was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The second movement has the delightful title “Fancy Menuit with figure Dance by Two young Ladies in the presance of Mrs. Washington in 1792. Phila. ” sic (The quaint original spellings and capitalizations are preserved here for historical interest. ) A fife-and-drum style arrangement of the BRANDYWINE QUICKSTEP completes this early American triptych. The stately and moderate tempos that fit the music of this era so well also ensure that the arrangements remain accessible to young bands.
