The bolero is Cuba's version of the ballad, and this hauntingly beautiful melody with lush orchestrations yields an expressive opportunity for both your alto sax soloist and ensemble. The Paquito D'Rivera-style solo is written out, with extra room left for improvisation and an optional ending cadenza. Rhythm section parts are all completely written out for an authentic and highly emotional performance.

Stephen Collins Foster lived from 1826 to 1864, until only age 37. He was extremely prolific, with numerous songs that have lasted to this day. I first had the idea to arrange Beautiful Dreamer for SATB choirs a cappella, after hearing Kristen Chenoweth in concert. She ended her concert, in a 1,600 seat hall, with Beautiful Dreamer, an a cappella solo, with no microphone. Given the beautiful melody, text and Ms. Chenoweth's voice, one could have heard a pin drop in the audience. Her performance concluded to thunderous applause and a standing ovation. The power of music. Throughout this arrangement, the harmonies support the beautiful melody and text (rather than get in its' way). Opportunities abound for vocal parts to be showcased as well as an optional solo/duet at the beginning. Sing freely, with pure vowels, crisp diction and sensitivity, allowing the text to prevail by giving special attention to stressed and unstressed syllables and words. I hope you enjoy singing this arrangement in rehearsal and performance to the delight of your audience. Tell the story through song because that's what we should always do when performing choral music. Russell Robinson, Arranger  .Stephen Collins Foster lived from 1826 to 1864, until only age 37. The Lost Words by composer James Burton takes its inspiration and text from the award-winning 'cultural phenomenon' and book of the same name by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: a book that was, in turn, a creative response to the removal of everyday nature words like acorn, newt and otter from a new edition of a widely used children's dictionary. Both the book and Burton's 32-minute work, which is written in 12 short movements for upper-voice choir in up to 3 voice parts (with either orchestral or piano accompaniment), celebrates each lost word with a beautiful poem or 'spell', magically brought to life in Burton's music. At its heart, the work delivers a powerful message about the need to close the gap between childhood and the natural world. Burton's piece was co-commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé Children's Choir and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children's Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children's Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic.

As long as I can remember, I've been drawn to this beautiful poetry written by Katharine Lee Bates. The text is incredibly evocative, and it describes a country that is beautifully diverse in population and landscape. For this particular setting, I've chosen to use some of the original text that is not often sung: Till selfish gain no longer stain, The banner of the free! It's a gentle reminder that we are at our best when we put our neighbors first. One challenge that this piece presents is the overwhelming use of quarter notes in the melody. I encourage you to speak the text and find and stress those important and evocative words more than those that are not. So often the key to the right musical phrasing is in the text, right before our eyes. This piece works well accompanied or a cappella, to provide the most opportunity for performing in concerts, assemblies, and civic or sacred settings when there is not a piano available. Thank you for selecting this piece. Savor the text, and lift your voices to celebrate our nation as we all strive to make tomorrow better than today. As long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to this beautiful poetry written by Katharine Lee Bates. Sometimes, music is not about anything. It exists solely for the beautiful sounds it creates and the emotions derived from that aesthetic experience. Where Words End... falls firmly into this category of music. This expressive piece makes creative use of the ranges and colors available for young bands to create a truly remarkable new work for students and directors alike. Where words end, music begins...
