March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held inCamposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was ‘science fiction’, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromaticfigures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change ofkey introduces a legato ‘trio’ melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting thefirst two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.March of the Robot Army werd geschreven in opdracht van Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi voor Campobanda 2019: de financiering werd mogelijk gemaakt door JUST ITALIA. Ein Tonartwechsel kündigt ein neues Thema an,das von der Trompete vorgestellt und anschließend vom gesamten Ensemble wiederholt wird. Ein weiterer Tonartwechsel führt zu einem melodischen, legato gespielten Trio-Abschnitt über einer roboterhaften Begleitung. Nach und nachkommen weitere Instrumente hinzu, bis der Höhepunkt erreicht ist. Destinée aux jeunes de 8 18 ans, Campobanda est une école demusique d’été dont le thème change chaque année. Celui de l’édition 2019 étant « sciencefiction », Philip Sparke décida d’écrire une marche pour robots. Après une introduction insolite rassemblant appels de trompette et figureschromatiques, le premier thème apparaît dans un mode mineur la clarinette et au saxophone ténor avant d’être repris par l’orchestre entier. Un changement de tonalité annonce un nouveau thème, mené par la trompette et repris,encore une fois, par l’orchestre entier. Un autre changement de tonalité introduit une mélodie legato « en trio » sur un accompagnement quelque peu robotique : divers instruments s’y ajoutent progressivement pour aboutir unclimax. Des petits motifs tirés de l’introduction mènent une récapitulation complète qui reprend les deux premiers thèmes sous des formes différentes, avant de conclure la marche avec un bouquet final.

POEM for Flute and PianoKozuch’s POEM is a plaintive elegy, perfect for memorial concerts, in religious services, or as a lyric interlude in recital. Although composed with piano accompaniment, the music is also very effective in performance with organ. Thaddeus Kozuch (1913-1991) was a Chicago-based pianist, composer, and professor at DePaul University and Northwestern University. His beautiful POEM was composed originally for violin and piano in 1937 for his wife-to-be, Jacqueline Frye. He revised POEM for flute and piano in 1988 but the work was discovered only recently in a piano bench by the composer’s daughter, flutist Ann Fairbanks.Although the final pencil manuscript is musically complete, it lacks dynamics, and this publication presents the music as the composer left it.The following performance suggestions are provided by Ann Fairbanks:Many nuances of the work may be left to the discretion of the performer. There are quite a few notes that may be slurred, such as sets of eighth notes or triplet-eighths; if notes are articulated as written, the tonguing should be legato.Dynamics for both flute and piano could be as follows: begin the work p, then crescendo to f in bars 6-7. Decrescendo in 10-11 to a p in bar 12. The most intense section (bars 16-32) should be played with energy and full sonority, including a crescendo in 26 to fin 27. The conclusion, beginning at bar 42, should be played p, with the last measures performed quietly.

Purcell began writing for the stage in 1680. His work for the two London theatre companies (which merged in 1682, but which in 1695 split once more into two competing factions) constituted an increasingly important aspect of his creative activities in the late 1680s, and became exceptionally fruitful in the last six years of his life, encompassing not merely his four great dramatic operas but also a prodigious quantity of music for more modest stage pieces. Jacob de Haan arranged four Christmas carols in the suite Four Shepherd Songs. In the four-part instrumentation, creating the possibility to play the piece with a large number of varied strengths, he successively arranged Als ich bei meinen Schafen wacht, Inmitten der Nacht, Kommet ihr Hirten, and Ihr Hirten, erwacht. The arrangement was skillfully replenished with suitable percussion instruments. All of the carols can be performed with a choir (German text). As the title suggests in Christmas Bells, bells play the leading part. This medley begins with bell chiming on the CD (this comes with the set), after which the band come in with a solid chord. During the short introduction, the bells still sound in the background. Following this sparkling introduction three well-known Christmas melodies are heard. Roland Kernen chose Kling Glöckchen klingelingeling, SüÃ?er die Glocken nie klingen and, of course, Jingle Bells! A fantasic work to end any Christmas concert.In Christmas Bells spelen klokken de hoofdrol. Deze medley begint met klokgelui op de cd, waarna het orkest inzet met een stevig akkoord. Tijdens de korte inleiding klinken de klokken van de cd nog op de achtergrond. Daarnakomen drie bekende kerstmelodieën beurtelings naar voren. Roland Kernen koos voor Kling klokje, klingelingeling, SüÃ?er die Glocken nie klingen en natuurlijk Jingle Bells!Weihnachten und Glockenklang sind untrennbar miteinander verknüpft - die groÃ?en Glocken der Kirchtürme erschallen weithin, während zu Hause drinnen und drauÃ?en zu Weihnachten gern mit kleinen Glöckchen geschmückt wird. Daher wählte sich André Waignein das Thema Glocken zum Motto seines bezaubernden neuen Weihnachtslieder- Medleys aus drei allseits bekannten Weihnachtsliedern. Comme son titre le suggère, les cloches constituent lâ??élément central de cette pièce festive. Christmas Bells (Les cloches de Noël) sâ??ouvre avec un carillon de cloches dâ??église (enregistré sur le CD joint cette édition). Lâ??Orchestre dâ??Harmonie entre sur un accord puissant puis développe une courte introduction tandis que le carillon résonne en fond sonore. Les trois noëls sont alors exposés tour tour. Roland Kernen a choisi de rassembler les deux noëls allemands, Kling Glöckchen klingelingeling et SüÃ?er die Glocken nie klingen, et lâ??incontournable Jingle Bells.Come suggerisce il titolo, le campane costituiscono lâ??elemento centrale di questo brano festivo. Il medley si apre con un carillon di campane di chiesa (inciso sul CD accluso al set per banda). La banda entra su un potente accordo per poi sviluppare una breve introduzione, mentre il carillon risuona sullo sfondo. This work, composed as ceremonial music, was to be part of a march medley for the participants' entry for the 2019 Inter-High School Championships, held in Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan. It was given its world premiere by the Kagoshima Prefectural Shoyo High School Symphonic Band under the direction of their teacher, Junya Tateishi. This work, fusing Japanese folk songs with march music, will have a wide appeal much like its sister works March-Bou-Shu and March-Chagu-Chagu, also published by De Haske Publications.
