â??I already wrote the Concerto for Guitar, Tympani and Strings for the outstanding Polish guitarist Lukasz Kuropaczewski. The 'Triptych' for guitar solo is my second work for this interpreter. The individual titles of the 'Triptych' movements â?? Fantasia, Aria and Impromptu furioso â?? refer to the characters of the individual movements. I completed 'Triptych' for guitar solo in December 2014. The piece is permeated by double contrasts: in terms of harmony, the guitar's own mood and sound world are contrasted with my harmonic thinking. In terms of technique, on the other hand, performance gestures of the Flamenco tradition are contrasted with those of the practice of classical guitar playing. The dialogue between different harmonic and historical levels can thus be discovered through a complex, clearly demarcated discourse. The performance duration of the work is about 15 minutes.â? (Krzysztof Meyer).

A triptych is a three-part altarpiece. In the middle of these fantasies for viola stands a biblical psalm, on the sides each a poem from the 20th century, which refers to psalms. After Georg Trakl's De Profundis, the first fantasy captures the lonely landscape at the beginning of the poem and the yearning voice of the orphan girl. In the second fantasy (after the 23rd Psalm Davids) pastoral-comforting mood frames the heaviness of the Wandering in the dark valley. The third fantasy of Paul Celan's Psalm lets the music emerge from the void, unfolding a melody with discreet allusions to psalmodody and Jewish music, which, despite shadowy clouding, ultimately allows for flowering (above the thorn).

The Triptych for piano (1953) shows a variety of musical ideas through its expressionistic character. The strong beginning of the first movement Allegro places the listener in the middle of a dramatic event with syncopated chords, which, after a quiet dolce middle section, leads to an energetic end. The melancholic 2nd movement Allegro assai is repeatedly colored by moving 32nd notes and ends thoughtfully in pianissimo. After that, the 3rd movement Vivo brings a breath of fresh air to the composition with a 16th note movement. (from the foreword by Christos Marantos).

Returning to his first love, the piano, this piece, composed in 1970. The three pieces forming the Triptych are a Meditation, a Dramatic Recitative and a Capriccio. The Meditation is naturally reflective, but not unduly introspective; the drama in the Recitative rests on the contrast between rhetorical statements and bravura passages; the Capriccio is carried on a vivacious rhythmic pulse and ends with brilliance. It is dedicated to Louis Kentner with admiration and gratitude - the admiration is for his playing, and the gratitude for the help he gave during the recording of my piano sonata by Marguerite Wolff. ~ Sir Arthur Bliss.

With inspiration taken from composers Maurice Ravel, Arthur Benjamin and Charles Ives, Bourgeois take s a tongue-in-cheek approach to this challenging 3-movement work. While the work is infused with humor throughout, it still showcases his mastery of the wind band idiom. In 1972, I wrote a Sonata for Two Pianos for two friends who were piano teachers at Wellington College. When in 1995 I was asked to write a work for wind band, I returned to this Sonata and have re-arranged and in the new version renamed it Fantasy Triptych. There are three movements: 1. Le Tombeau d'Arthur Benjamin Ravel wrote 'Le Tombeau de Couperin,' Arthur Benjamin wrote 'Le Tombeau de Ravel' and so the temptation to write 'Le Tombeau d'Arthur Benjamin' was overwhelming. At the end of the movement there is an oblique reference to Benjamin's own 'Jamaican Rumba' which accompanies a quote from an old Spanish folk song 'Loro, enciende el hervidor de agua.' 2. Mr. Bolt goes for a ride in his motor car, and Monsieur Ravel turns in his grave. The movement is dedicated to an old friend, Geoffrey Bolt, who adores the music of Ravel. but at the time of writing was learning to drive. He always described his vehicle as a motor car. To describe him as an impatient motorist would be a gross understatement. The refined suavity of Ravel's music was in complete contrast to these early manifestations of road rage, hence the central angry outburst. 3. The War March of the Ostriches The music of Charles Ives was fascinating me at the time of writing this movement and some of the influence has rubbed off in this rondo-like march. At the end there is a quote from the very beginning of the first movement. The title was inspired by the amusing antics of a group of ostriches during a visit to Bristol Zoo.

“I like the idea of exploring the dramatic, ritualistic side of music. In The Mirror With Three Faces, one can look at three different faces or roles of the same person or at three distinct personalities – each with its own face. Each character (i.e. instrument) may be isolated, in conflict, or in harmony with others and itself. This trio explores individuality and ensemble, harmony and conflict, one in three or three in one – that is the ambiguous nature of this work, structured in the form of a triptych.†(Lera Auerbach).

Antiphon on Magnificat for Maundy Thursday, Antiphon on Magnificat for Good Friday, Antiphon on Magnificat for Holy SaturdayThis major work for organ is dedicated to the memory of the beloved church musician Sam Batt Owens, and certainly reflects his warmth of personality. The chants are developed in a subtle manner throughout the three parts and the phrases are elegant. A good legato technique will be required in the hands, while the pedal parts are only moderately difficult. Stearns gives plenty of opportunity for varied colors in these movements, and the harmonies are derived from the chant in a most satisfying way. This Triptych would also be appropriate for concert use.
