Written for upper-advanced organ players, Three Preludes and Fugues is a work by Marcel Dupre. Dedicated to Rene Vierne, this Op. 7 uses complex figurations and pedals. With such challenging difficulty, the first and third preludes were pronounced?unplayable by Charles-Marie Widor due to their fast tempo, their figurations and the pedal chords. For a long time, Dupre himself was the only one able to play them. Marcel Dupre is a French organist who reviewed some works by J. S. Bach, including The little Organ Book. Composed by Jehan Alain, Three Pieces is a set of upper intermediate / advanced works for organ, with pedal-use. The first piece, ?Variations sur un theme de Clement Jannequin (Variations on a Clement Jannequin's Tune), should be played?in the same way as Couperin's Preludes: freshly and softly. It contains four distinctive parts: Affetuoso, Maggiore, Fuggato and Grave. The second piece is called ?Le jardin suspendu (The hanging garden) and features three different parts that can't be played separately. The last piece, Litanies, is quite religious and consists of the repetition of lamentations. Its introduction in vivo is played only by the right hand, then followed by a?Lirico ma sempre vivo part. These are followed by switches between the main tempo and some vivacissimo parts, sounding declamatory. This third piece ends really harmoniously. Jehan Alain is a French organist who became famous with his Suite for Organ. Student of Marcel Dupre and Roger Ducasse among others, he kept composing all his life. One of his most famous international pieces is Litanies.

Flute and Piano - All three pieces are dedicated to famous French flute players: Nocturne to Paul Taffanel; Arabesque to Adolphe Hennebains and Serenade Melancolique to Georges Barrère. Nocturne was written in 1900, being performed subsequently in the Promenade concerts of 1904 and 1906 at Queen's Hall in London, with Albert Fransella on flute. Its style is still firmly rooted in the late Romantic period. As indicated by markings such as expressif and avec chaleur, this is highly emotional music with beautiful long lines and intense harmonies. It is thought that both Arabesque and Serenade Melancolique were written a year later than Nocturne in 1901. Arabesque has elegance, poise and a wistful character, created by the minor key. As you would expect from its title, Serenade Melancolique expresses all the tragedy and passion of unrequited love.

His artistic gifts were revealed very early. He completed his musical training in Lebanon with Hagop Arslanian and groomed himself into becoming an accomplished composer, pianist, conductor, chorus-master and poet. He was celebrated as a child prodigy, with some hundred musical compositions written between 1969 - when he was only twelve - and 1978.

French born harpist and composer, Marcel Grandjany (1891-1975) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before spending much of his working life in America. His Trois petites Pièces were composed in Grandjany's early career and are simple and enjoyable works, suitable for beginner harpists. Grandjany was a teacher of harp at the Julliard School for 37 years whilst also composing and transcribing many works for the instrument. Made up of three movements, Trois petites Pièces begins with a delicate Rêverie (daydream). The second piece, a Nocturne, contains variations in tempo, time signature and dynamics. The Barcarolle third movement is the most challenging of the three pieces, in 6/8 time signature and sixteenth-note flourishes. All these combined aspects of Trois petites Pièces by Grandjany make for a thrilling performance for beginner harpists.
