Composed in 1922, the Two Movements - MCMXXII is a piece for two flutes or flute and oboe, clarinet and bassoon by Jacques Ibert. Dedicated to the Modern Society of Wind instruments, this quartet is difficult and is composed of two movements: Allant and?Assez vif et rythme. This really lyrical quartet work is a great piece to play for a concert. Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) also composed many symphonic suites, operas and seven orchestras, including Angelique (1926) and Divertissement (1930). He also was in charge of the Accademie de France in the Villa Medicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera.

In the period around 1700, numerous settings of the Magnificat were performed in the main Leipzig churches. Works by composers such as J. Kuhnau and G. P. Telemann survive; however, the best-known examples are undoubtedly the Magnificat BWV 243 and 243a by J. S. Bach, the 'extra' movements for the latter which exist in Bach's own hand. Following a long-established Leipzig tradition, the vocal settings of Vom Himmel hoch, Freut euch und jubiliert, Gloria in excelsis and Virga Jesse floruit (known as the Kindl-Wiegen) could be inserted between the verses of the Magnificat at Christmas. Some of these are scored for festive forces. These extra movements in C major published here for the first time, and attributed to Johann Schelle, can be performed either together with a Magnificat setting in a suitable key (e.g. by Kuhnau, Telemann) or independently.

Handel's Oralorio Saul, composed in 1739, contains a series of instrumental movements which provide commentary on the action. Composers have often written works in the form of suites from these movements. Handel's blocks of polyphonic music are also particularly suitable for wind band. ...and sundry movements of the heart... for Tuba and Piano. The four movements of this work explore very diverse (sundry) musical territories: abstract and serious, songlike, humorous, pensive and transcendent. Many of the musical ideas were generated in spontaneous improvising sessions or by singing--hence, movements of the heart. Prelude is anchored in its structure by a bold, serious gesture that is heard at the beginning, middle, and end of the movement, developed differently each time. The two intervening episodes are contrasting in tempo, and materials: the first is more abstract, the second a strong, focused melody. Song, the second movement, is a warmly lyrical tune in a straightforward setting. The third movement, Vaudeville, is light-hearted and witty. Standing Stones is titled after numerous sites in the British Isles where ancient people erected huge stones in circles, singly, or even lining broad avenues. The incredible effort required to do so is mind-boggling, given the tools available to the people. And that they were able to make near-perfect circles, with stones aligned by the positions of sun and moon and seasons is further evidence of their intelligence and dedication to ideas and deep feelings far beyond the daily tasks of survival. The music begins very quietly, in deep tones, enigmatic harmonies, and introspective melodies. The music gradually takes on a brighter sound until it reaches an ecstatic climax.

Suite in Three Movements (2021) for harpsichord was commissioned by Scott Hyslop. The three movements take their inspiration and forms from early models. They combine allusions to common practice harmony with later harmonic and rhythmic elements. The first movement, Concerto, is in a bright, Italianate manner (not without a bit of humor). The animating contrast is between ripieno (ritornello) sections and filigree-driven solo episodes. The second movement, Arioso, is a lyric aria in which the baroque-like principal material is integrated with more varied harmonic excursions. Probably following a special Leipzig tradition, Bach added four extra movements to the first version of his Magnificat BWV 243a (in E flat major); these can be inserted in performances of the Magnificat at Christmas between the verses of the Magnificat. These are included in our edition transposed down a semitone, so that they can be performed with the widely-known later version of the Magnificat in D BWV 243.
