Pastoral Pictures paints three contrasting ‘sound pictures’. The first movement is solemn and majestic, the second dreamy and serene and he final movement joyous and cheerful. A fantastic concert work for all Grade 2-3 bands.

With his piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition from 1874, Mussorgsky created a classic example of programme music. Based on the paintings of his deceased friend Viktor Hartmann, he also composed the lyrical serenade 'Il vecchio castello' (The Old Castle), among others. Hartmann's picture shows a medieval Italian castle with a singing troubadour who accompanies himself on the lute. In Maurice Ravel's subsequent famous orchestral version, the beautiful, melancholy melody was played by the alto saxophone. Accompaniment, prelude and interludes are reminiscent of playing a medieval hurdy-gurdy with its pervading drone bass. Therein lies the continuity of the piece, thereabove lies the quiet romance with its melancholy character - the unrequited love of the troubadour. This separate edition now gives all saxophonists the opportunity to play the piece with piano accompaniment.

'Composed in 1910, Bartok's 'Two Pictures' for orchestra, too, draws on Debussy and folk music. Indeed, the title itself is a reference to Debussy's famous piano cycle, 'Images'. The two movements, 'In Full Flower' and 'Village Dance' represent two Bartokian movement types. The first one is the delicate and intimate music of nature. Debussy's influence is most tangible here. The second movement, 'Village Dance' is only related to the previous movement through its tonal system. It is, rather, a sort of 'bone and muscle' music that belongs to the barbaro type of movements, and as such, consists of possibly the simplest elements. Long sections consist of the continual repetition of a primitive motif. The work was first performed three years after its completion, on 25 February 1913, by the Budapest Philhamonic Orchestra, under the baton of Istvan Kerner.' Ravel's brilliant compositional interpretation of the Pictures at an Exhibition is, to this day, the most famous and independent orchestration of Mussorgsky's masterpiece. When the French composer turned his attention to his Russian colleague's piano cycle in 1922, he was at the height of his mastery and Paris was enraptured by Russian music. Notated with remarkable accuracy in an autograph score, Ravel's orchestration was an audience favorite from the very start. Jean-Francois Monnard, who previously edited the Breitkopf Urtext editions of Bolero, La Valse and Rapsodie espagnole, presents a text in which even the tiniest detail is authentic. The edition not only eliminates many previously undiscovered errors, but also offers a wealth of practical information on the long and multi-faceted performance history of the work, including the metronome markings of great conductors who were connected to the work in a very special manner.Bibliography:Mayer, Stephan: Sonne fur die Seele.
