Composer and organist, Joseph Bonnet (1884-1944) is considered one of the most major French pipe organ players. It is no surprise, therefore, that his Concert Variations for Organ are very well informed. Following his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bonnet took over as concert organist at the institution. Concert Variations for Organ was compiled in 1906, soon after his graduation. The work begins with a helpful index of the organ registrations and performance directions. Concert Variations begins with a virtuosic, cadenza-like theme in E minor. Following this, four variations are heard, all containing contrast in organ sound, tonality and exploited melody and rhythm. For all advanced, aspiring organists, Bonnet's Concert Variations is an essential addition to the repertoire.

The Blue Rose Variations is one of several works in which the composer has drawn on ragtime and blues. The organ work is based on two transformations of the popular piano piece To A Wild Rose (Woodland Sketches, Op.51 No.1) by the American composer, Edward MacDowell (1860-1908). During the course of the Variations, To A Wild Rose appears as a blues and also as a classical rag, often as both together. The sections are Theme: a quiet blues; Variation I: a pedal solo in varied metres based on the blues in fast tempo; Variation II: the first appearance of the rag as a background to the blues as a 2' pedal solo; Variation III: a version of Variation I now involving manuals too; Variation IV: another blues solo against the rag; Variation V: another version of Variation I with the pedal solo almost entirely transferred to the manuals; Variation VI: a final confrontation between the blues and the rag, now much decorated. First performed in New York in April 1986. Duration c.15 mins.

“French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Gregorian Variations on a Salve Ragina 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Gregorian Variations for Trumpet and String Orchestra and Organ reduction was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Gregorian Variations on a Salve Regina is a highly unusual and modern work based on an old Marian Hymn (a song for the Virgin Mary). The variations exploit tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. This Tomasi piece is suitable for advanced trumpeters, providing an exciting, alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.â€.

Suited to advanced level trumpeters and cornetists, Bitsch's Four Variations on a Theme by Domenico Scarlatti includes a variety of technical aspects as well as sublime musicality. In his latter years, Bitsch dedicated himself to the analysis of music by the Baroque masters. It is clear that his inspiration for Four Variations on a Theme by Domenico Scarlatti comes from his passion for and interest in the era. The variety of this exciting Bitsch piece is outstanding, creating a necessary, inspiring addition to the Trumpet and Cornet repertoire.â€.

“Dedicated to Ulysse Delécluse, Variations on a tune of the Pays d'Oc by Louis Cahuzac is a piece for Clarinet and Piano that refers to an area of the south of France. This set contains four variations on Se Canto, a song from the valley of the Garonne, and was composed for upper-intermediate / advanced players. Rhythms, chromaticisms, trills and other technical aspects make this piece very challenging. Its four variations are: 1. Allegretto vivo e leggerio, 2. Alla polacca, 3. Andante and 4. Moderato. Highly melodic, this piece would work exceptionally well for a recital. Louis Cahuzac was one of the very few clarinettists of the beginning of the 20th century who managed to make a career as a soloist.â€.

A remarkable set of 40 variations derived from a single melody by Otaker Sevcik. Arranged for the Viola with Piano accompaniment, the variations become progressively more complex and difficult throughout the work, making this set ideal as a set of challenging exercises for the Viola student. As well as presenting a huge variety of technical goals, much can be learned from this work about the nature of composition, melody-building and the potential versatility of a single melodic idea. A superb and satisfyingly musical teaching aid.
