Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a pianist and composer of international stature and one of the towering figures of early 20th century music. I then improvised in that style and concept on my trombone, recording my efforts until I was satisfied with the etude. All along, my goal was to play the range of the instrument while emphasizing certain articulations, rhythms, range and, fundamentally, the intended style of the etude. The resulting etude was then transcribed by a terrific graduate student named Zach Bornheimer, who also works with many other classical and jazz composers as a copyist/arranger.Tips for working on the etudes: Seek out professional recordings that match the style of each etude to get a good idea of what the etude should sound like musically. My recording of each of these etudes is available for download and can be purchased online for a modest fee. Search for “Brantley Etudes†at either iTunes or CDBaby. Practice each etude very slowly and in segments as needed, using a metronome. Record yourself and listen for good technique, musicianship and authenticity of style with your sound, feel and articulations. Compare your own efforts to the sounds you’ve heard on recordings. Would you fit in that ensemble or band? If range is an issue, take certain notes or passages down or up an octave. Work on your fundamentals every day, including the techniques and skills needed for these etudes. Be patient! Small improvements every day result in big success over time. Always play with a wide dynamic range. Always play with line and direction. Always play with impeccable time as well as rhythm. Use a metronome to help with this. Always play in tune. You can work on this with a tuner as well as with drones. Play these for teachers, friends, peers and colleagues not only for their feedback but also for the experience of informal performance. An audience changes everything. Make music, listen to music, record yourself, play in public and have fun!One final note: some of these are hard. On purpose. The fingering on nearly all 'modern' editions of the Carcassi studies Op. 60, to a very large extent if not almost completely, derives originally from Llobet, who in his Rowies, Paris 1914 edition was the very first to publish RH fingering for them. Many modern editors just put their own names on what was Llobet's fingering, thus silently claiming it as their own. A process being continued even to this day. We are pleased to present a carefully restored facsimile of this edition from Llobet's library with all his fingering and emendations intact.

Liszt later reworked 11 pieces of this not-so-technically-difficult series into virtuoso concert etudes, and replaced one of the etudes with a new piece. This version was published in 1837 under the name Grandes études. However, Liszt reworked these 12 big etudes again: the final version of the series - in which, with two exceptions, the pieces were titled - was published in 1851 under the series title Études d exécution transcendante. Transcendental Etudes was the very first volume of the New Liszt Complete Critical Edition, and it wasfirst published in 1970 based on the previous editions of the work. This edition includes footnotes highlighting common performance difficulties as well as English and German forewords, facsimiles, and critical notes in English.

The most important prerequisite for success in studying the instrument is the ability to practise in a meaningful and rational manner - i. e. to aim at a steady progress through regular and purposeful application, with the least possible expenditure of time and energy. One can only be sure of making improvement when one practises daily, and as one improves so confidence grows and there is a proper basis for success. In this connection it should always be noted that the choice and the demands of individual exercises in respect of range and difficulty of technique and musicality should refer to the standard attained at the relevant time. In the whole curriculum the study has a very important place. In that it is by way of being and exercise, it deals with particular problems of playing in different compositional guises, and shows the necessary link between purely technical and mechanical matter and the literature (including that for concert use) of the instrument. When beginning work on a study the first thing to do is to determine the central problem posed by the composer. For this reason the study should first be read through so that the contents may be grasped and the transference of notes into sound as far as possible be accomplished.
