Vexilla Regis prodeunt, by Venantius Fortunatus (the Bishop of Poitiers in the 6th century) ist the text of one of the most important hymns of the Catholic liturgy. It is sung on Good Friday and, with variatons in the text, can be sung on the feast of the raising of the Holy Cross. A very young Puccini (between 1874 and 1880) set the first and third strophes of the hymn in three parts. It was written for an amateur organist in Bagni di Lucca, where Giacomo occasionally played in a dance orchestra.
