The Everlasting Voices is the perfect blend of textural variety and harmonic interest for the advanced treble ensemble. Employing a powerful text, Baas' vocal layering coupled with piano and optional cello make this compelling piece a programming must!.O sweet everlasting Voices, be still; Go to the guards of the heavenly fold And bid them wander obeying your will, Flame under flame, till Time be no more; Have you not heard that our hearts are old, That you call in birds, in wind on the hill, In shaken boughs, in tide on the shore? O sweet everlasting Voices, be still. This SSAA choral work by Jimmy Baas was comissioned by the Lumberton HS Varsity Treble Choir. The opening and closing lines of the poem, O sweet everlasting voices, be still provide the perfect bookends for two larger sections of the poem. These two sections are equally divided into verses. The opening line is used once again as a transition between the verses. The previously mentioned lines, O sweet everlasting voices, are overlapped as different layers of voices enter and sustain. A fifth and sixth voice, the cello and piano accompaniment take part in these layers as well. The words be still are very much a part of the mood each time as the everlasting voices become quiet and still. The two verses feature different voices within the SSAA choir. Verse 1, the sopranos, and verse 2 the altos. There are many moments in this piece to explore the full range and color of the SSAA choir. The piano and cello play an important part throughout, making this piece an excellent choice for any festival women's chorus.O sweet everlasting Voices, be still;Go to the guards of the heavenly foldAnd bid them wander obeying your will,Flame under flame, till Time be no more;Have you not heard that our hearts are old,That you call in birds, in wind on the hill,In shaken boughs, in tide on the shore?O sweet everlasting Voices, be still. This SSAA choral work by Jimmy Baas wascomissioned by the Lumberton HS Varsity Treble Choir. The opening and closing lines of the poem, “O sweeteverlasting voices, be still†provide the perfect bookendsfor two larger sections of the poem. In my sixth work for a string quartet, there is a very simple melody concealed in the background. That melody (distant voices) is played within an extremely slow tempo, and the notes which form the melody gain different textures by becoming disassembled, and played by different techniques. In our daily lives, our inner voices become concealed by our daily customs. The act of composing, tome, is to find out that concealed distant voices, make those voices spatialized and construct them within the musical time. This work is dedicated to Alois Lageder. Toshio Hosokawa.

This piece is concerned with the world of shaman, which I have been very interested in lately. A shaman is a person who creates a path connecting this world and the underworld. In this trio, the violin represents female, and the cello male. The instruments sing a duo as an extension of the voices of two shamans. The piano is the cosmos and the nature. Violin and piano have a 'Yin and Yang' relationship, the creation principal of the Taoism cosmos: polar opposites which compliment one another without cancelling each other out, creating perfect harmony. Written for the Enchanted Voices CD, this is one of many settings of texts either from the Beatitudes (or springing from them) available from this composer. For solo and unison voices, cello, and organ, the music has a light, ethereal feeling. The text is in Latin. Appropriately for the title, this movement has the simplest construction of any of the Beatitude pieces. An angular but comfortable vocal line is sung first by the soloist and then by an increasing number of voices. The organ and muted cello accompany with a sustained, almost cantus-firmus-like line. Peaceful, legato, and sublime. Duration 4:30

Though a piano can always be included, it is not an essential requirement for the performance of these settings: in some of the carols, two violins or two flutes are quite sufficient, especially if voices are used as well. The following combinations are particularly suitable for domestic music-making, whether or not voices are included as well:one violin and piano, two violins and piano, two or three violins, violins and recorders, two concert (C) flutes (and an alto flute) and - as the ideal combination for shepherds' songs - flutes, violins, cello and piano.Performing groups and music schools have the advantage of a wider choice of forces and the possibility of varying the instrumentation within the individual carols and verses. Thus large and small combinations can alternate, strings and flutes can play in turn, and finally the piano can be used by itself or to reinforce other instrumental combinations, in which case the cello can be added, too.The pieces are graded in increasing order of difficulty; the first carols are chosen so that they can be mastered by violinists after as little as 4 to 6 months of learning their instrument. The choise and sequence of the carols in this book, and also their keys, were determined, amongst other factors, by their suitability for the start of violin tuition, both in first and in third position, so that these carols make an especially good supplement of Christmas music to the violin method of Fritz and Gottfried Scharlach (with its principle of starting with the third position). The progressively increasing difficulty of the carols has resulted, for example, in the three Advent carols (nos. 23-25) being placed later in the collection. The editor hopes that these carols will be much played and sung, and thus help to fill the Christmas season with joy and splendour.Fritz Scharlach, Salzburg, December 1972Our beautiful Christmas carols, old and new, are presented here in settings, ranging from the easy to the more difficult, for various combinations of voices and instruments that may be available in domestic music-making or for a Christmas concert.
