Polar Vortex is a depiction of a winter storm inspired by the poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson, The Snow-Storm. It is a rhapsodic piece with many contrasting moments, styles, tempos, and colors of sound. Composer Lon W. Chaffin asks, What is a Vortex? A basic definition would be a whirling mass of something, especially water or air, that draws everything near towards its center... such as that relatively mysterious occurrence in space that is often referred to as a black hole - a location in space where the gravitational pull is so powerful that everything, even light, is pulled into its center. That spacial anomaly and the concept of composing for a newly formed tuba ensemble became mingled in my mind and served to generate the ideas that have gone into this piece..

Kathryn Griesinger builds the forceful minor theme of Centrifuge on a repeating motif of rotating eighth notes. Based on the scientific principle of centripetal force, this piece offers a vortex of expanding and falling energy, with easy finger patterns in first position. Centrifuge is a whirlwind of excitement, and it is well within the reach of developing players. An optional piano part is also included.Like the rotational force of the mechanical centrifuge, a repeating eighth-note motif gives this piece the feel of a spinning cyclone, constantly building energy and momentum. Driving rhythms in the cello and bass should be strong and steady. Viola and Violin 2 parts are written closely, often doubled for a strong echoing voice. Eighth-note patterns sound best if played at the middle or balance point of the bow, to enable easy transitions between springy, short staccatos and long, full half notes on the string. Students have ample opportunities to practice low-two finger patterns and create dramatic dynamic contrasts. The pizzicato section should remain steady, maintaining a sense of urgency and excitement. The dark minor tonality and sense of motion make this a powerful piece students will love to play!

Programme note
Morpheus in the Greek mythology is the most powerful of the Oneroi, the gods of dreams. He is the one who sends us our dreams and he may appear to us within the dreams in disguise.
Analogous to the logic of dreams, in Morpheus everything is interwoven, as chains of associations appear to logically lead us from one line of thought to another. Everything seems strangelyfamiliar. But the logic is treacherous and we already feel, it may only be valid within the dream. Nothing that appears similar is actually ever really the same.
Half awakening, we struggle to hold on to a vanishing world we felt we were on the verge of understanding, but which we already know will eventually escape us when we fully awake.
Everything remains a mystery until the end.

Eliza Aria by Elena Kats-Chernin has become a worldwide success. Composed for the fairy-tale ballet Wild Swans choreographed by Maryl Tankard in 2003, it has become internationally known as theme melody of the TV and Internet advertising campaign For the journey of Lloyds TSB as from 2007. The charming animated clips were broadcast for several years, finding millions of fans. As a result, great musicians like Daniel Hope or Lang Lang included Kats-Chernin's ethereal, yet vortex-like rhythmic musical piece in their programmes. The composer arranged the piece for various instrumentations. Now the version for piano trio, created in 2012, is available for sale, too.
