Die Satze in dieser Ausgabe sind vierstimmig fur Sopran-, Alt-, Tenor- und Bassblockflote bearbeitet. Wenn erforderlich, konnen die einzelnen Lieder durch Weglassung der Tenor-Blockflote auch dreistimmig aufgefuhrt werden. Es besteht weiterhin die Moglichkeit, den drei- oder vierstimmigen Blasersatz durch Streicher zu verstarken oder Stimmen zu ersetzen. Die Stimme der Sopran-Blockflote entspricht der Melodie. Durch die abgedruckten Texte konnen die Stucke so auch mit Gesang aufgefuhrt werden. Akkordbezeichnungen ermoglichen daruber hinaus auch weitere Begleitungen, z.B. mit Gitarre.

This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen is of the well-known German chorale Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, taken from the oratorio Paulus (St. Paul) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847). Although accredited to Mendelssohn it is thought the melody was in fact written by the pastor and poet Philipp Nicolai in 1599. Robert van Beringenâ??s arrangement perfectly captures the biblical story of St. Paul.

The three-verse text of the motet for mixed choir (SATB) and basso continuo was written by Friedrich Gottlob Klopstock who kept close to the Advent song of the same name by Philipp Nicolai. During Zelter's lifetime, the motet enjoyed great popularity. And quite rightly so: For the music teacher and friend of Goethe turned out to be a composer with an extraordinary sense of tone. An introductory choral movement is followed by a captivating bass aria which can be optionally sung by all basses of the choir. The piece culminates in an elaborate virtuoso fugue with an interwoven cantus firmus in the bass. A demanding, yet highly rewarding rarity in church music!
