Composer's Notes: The last few years I have become increasingly involved in some peculiar mathematical formulas called “fractalsâ€. These formulas, used in the fast growing field of “Chaos theoryâ€, are relatively simple, but they generate fascinating and surprisingly “organic†patterns when shown graphically on a computer screen, or played as music. One should think that such a mathematical approach would lead to sterile and 'theoretical' music. The sound world of Stonewave, however, is not one you would associate with math books. The steady, insistent pulse, and the use of sequences put squarely up against each other or divided by long rests suggest an invisible ritual. A ritual for what? Well then, let it be a ritual for the exorcism of some 'evil spirits' which now ride our part of the world under the name of Liberalism, making people the servants of the Market Forces instead of vice versa. Stonewave is therefore an incantation, as it seems that only divine forces can save European culture from a political system that proclaims the Jungle Law as the guiding principle in social and cultural life. Energy Wave was written for the 2023 Shepherd University High School Honor Music Festival Wind Ensemble, where Dr. Scott Hippensteel is the Director of Instrumental Studies. The piece depicts musical energy and intensity, starting with a quick and vibrant introduction based on a two-measure rhythmic ostinato. This transitions to a softer and exciting section at m. 29, where the percussion section maintains the rhythmic ostinato in the vibraphone and other percussion instruments. Measure 48 is the transitory phrase for the final recapitulation at m. 59. This dynamic and intense work describes a phenomenon in which clouds follow the same pattern as waves in the ocean. After an introspective opening, the music grows in intensity with long sustained chords pushing through intense rhythmic movement. Eventually, woodwinds become the focus of the work in a subdued section before undulating percussion begin the final powerful drive. Woodwinds join in a flurry of activity while brass players sustain epic chords once more, until a whirlwind of notes converge into one chaotic statement, punctuated by dissonant chords in the brass. The final sequence will leave the audience gasping. Intense!

New Wave is built from musical materials which are similar to many of the extended harmonies and modal structures found in jazz. The first movement is set in a driving 6/8 rhythm with extensive imitative counterpoint between the saxophone and the piano. The middle movement begins with a short cadenza-like passage from the saxophone leading to transparent ethereal presentation of themes, followed by a heavy, dark section.
