Sea of Hope is an optimistic work about new land arisen from the former Zuiderzee (the Netherlands). In the introduction, the sea is conveyed in all its glory and ferocity, through a melody that keeps you wondering whether it makes you happy or sad. Then, finally, there is a glimmer of hope, when the water is dammed up and the land partly reclaimed (by conversion into polder land). The town of Dronten, for instance, develops into a place where one day two people meet up and fall in love. This love is reflected in the slow, passionate middle movement. New life in the town is celebrated joyfully: the zest for life clearly shines through this part of the work, followed byoptimism and celebration in the closing bars.

Score and parts
If Nicholas Maw is best known as a master of expansive, often melancholy, musical statements, his riveting American Games for symphonic wind band displays a different side of his fascinating output. Unfolding as one continuous span, this driving, dynamic 7-movement work is filled with rhythmic zest and a sophisticated feeling for colour. Commissioned for the 1991 BBC Proms, the work was first performed there by the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra.

In this vibrant and tuneful suite each movement is represented by a different colour. Sky Blue is carefree and fun, soaring up high and pulsating with energy throughout. Cornfield Yellow in contrast is wistful and lyrical, and explores a simple harmonic landscape in new and interesting ways. Lastly Forest Green buzzes with energy and rhythmic zest, and proves to be a punchy finale to the suite. At around five minutes in total Colours Suite No. 1 will prove highly enjoyable for performers and audiences alike.

Tarjan, Hungarian Pictures is a work in three movements commissioned by the town of Vesoul and its concert band. This work pays tribute to Jean-Marie Goux, the bands former musical director, who had forged strong links with Hungary: whether in the village of Tarjan or Budapest itself, he had shared his zest for life with the Hungarian people. This colourful work consists of three movements: The 7th Tribe, Eternal Fidelty and Conquest of the Homeland. It offers not only strong musical content, but also historical insight about a beautiful region with a great tradition.

Grieg's violin sonatas are a firm staple of violin repertoire and are popular with amateurs and professionals alike. G. Henle Publishers takes this into account with a practical single-volume edition of the three sonatas. Thus, you are simply spoilt for choice as to whether you prefer the youthful zest of the first, the Nordic-folkloristic charm of the second or the mature drama of the third sonata. The opulent volume is rounded off by a small piece that is ideal as an encore: a march from Grieg's incidental music to Sigurd Jorsalfar, which the composer himself arranged for violin and piano. Therefore, this Henle Urtext edition actually offers GriegÂs complete oeuvre for this instrumentation â a âmust-haveâ for all fans of the great Nordic melodist.
