SKU: GI.G-10368 A Document History (1835-1935). Composed by Bryan J. Proksch. Music Education. 346 pages. GIA Publications #10368. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-10368). ISBN 9781622776276. This is a fascinating and important book for everybody even remotely interested in the history of American bands. Bryan Proksch has done some painstakingly thorough research in putting together an amazing assemblage of documents… This is a must-have book! —Jon Ceander Mitchell   The Wind Music Research Quarterly: Mitteilungsblatt der IGEB   (March 2022), 14–15 For the scholar, each entry presents an opportunity for expansion. For the teacher, this work provides source readings for courses on wind band history or for complementing Strunk or Weiss-Taruskin in university music history courses. That said, these documents stand as an enriching and entertaining read in their own right for anyone interested in the subject. —Michael O’Connor   Historic Brass Today 1/2 (Spring 2022), 32 The Golden Age of American Bands is ideally suited for courses on the history and literature of bands in America. Indeed, this volume could suffice as a textbook for adventuresome teachers in that it touches on the major musicians, instruments, ensembles, and functions expected of such a course. . . . Both private and classroom band instructors will find compelling glimpses into the history of their craft. [It is] bursting with opportunities to inspire curiosity in their students while effectively supporting their own curricular goals. —Benjamin D. Lawson and James A. Davis   The Journal of Music History Pedagogy Proksch’s new collection of documents is a most welcome step in the direction of getting [the story of bands] under control. The juxtaposition of documents from so many levels and types of ensembles proves to have a cumulative effect: one begins to see the subtle and long-lasting connections among them despite the big differences. It is easy to envision it as a supplemental text in a course on band history and literature, but the book is also just an absorbing read. There is much to learn here, and much to enjoy. —Ken Kreitner   Notes 79/2 (December 2022): 217-218 This is the story of the American wind band, told chronologically by those who experienced it in real time from 1835 to 1935. How did bands become bands? How did they rise in popularity? Which figures had insights and specific impacts on the development of the genre? Through source documents and articles, Bryan Proksch takes us on an extraordinary journey from the time of the first brass bands in the 1830s, through the Civil War and the golden ages of Gilmore and Sousa, to the cusp of the wind ensemble just before World War II. Hear from a young Frederick Fennell about his efforts to create the first band at Eastman. Read the outline of Allessandro Liberati’s unpublished trumpet method book. Eavesdrop on Karl L. King as he muses on the fate of bands after the death of Sousa. See Patrick Conway’s first undergraduate music education curriculum. Gawk as trombonist Fredrick Neil Innes embarrasses “world’s greatest cornetist†Jules Levy at Coney Island. Explore as Alan Dodworth revolutionizes bands. Retreat with a military band in the middle of a Civil War battle. Find out what it felt like to sit in a Sousa Band rehearsal. Ask Herbert L. Clarke why he thinks you should be playing a cornet instead of a trumpet. Find out how P. S. Gilmore managed to pull off the biggest concert events in American history. The book includes numerous rare and unknown illustrations to show you the places where band history happened. The documents include rare periodical excerpts, handwritten letters, and other writings taken from archives throughout the United States. These first-person accounts are certain to further refine and deepen our understanding and appreciation of American band history on a grand scale. Vocal soli, choir, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 horns, 2 trombones, 2 violins, viola, basso continuo SKU: CA.5070400 Opera in three acts. Composed by Johann Adolf Hasse. Edited by Zenon Mojzysz. This edition: Complete edition, linen cover. Complete editions / Selected works: Johann Adolf Hasse. Selected Works. German title: Cleofide. Opera, singspiel. Full score (complete edition / selected edition). Composed 1731. 432 pages. Duration 240 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 50.704/00. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.5070400). ISBN 9790007092283. Language: Italian. Text: Boccardi, Michelangelo / Metastasio, Pietro. Text: Michelangelo Boccartdi, Pietro Metastasio. Hasse's Cleofide of 1731 can be regarded as the zenith of his creative output - not least of all because he integrated several of his greatest arias from earlier works into this opera. The theme from antiquity Alexander's conquests in India was perfectly suited to flatter August the Strong, a rather unsuccessful commander-in-chief, who at that moment was occupied with the reorganization of his armies. For performance at the Court of Dresden, Metastasio's original libretto was reworked by Michelangelo Boccardi. As a result, the title of the opera was changed from Alessandro nell' Indie to Cleofide and Faustina Bordoni, the prima donna and wife of Johann Adolf Hasse, became the protagonist of the story. Musically, the opera reflected the style of the time. Hasse's expressive and natural style was admired and appreciated by the public professional musicians alike. The vocal parts were tailor-made for the singers and in performing this work the outstanding soloists and the orchestra could shine. Hasse always tried to get the utmost from his musicians and in the case of Cleofide he achieved a 100% success. The Carus edition of Cleofide, which has been published as a part of the Hasse-Werkausgabe, is the very first printed edition of this work. It is based primarily on the original parts used for the first performance in 1731 and presents both an accurate musicological rendering of the sources as well as a practical performance edition. $372.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

L'Orfeo is an opera from 1607, based around the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. It is often cited as the earliest opera still regularly performed today. The libretto was written by the Italian lawyer anddiplomat Alessandro Striggio (1573-1630), for a carnival in Mantua. The music was composed by the Italian priest Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), arguably the greatest composer of the Renaissance era, who is bestknown for his madrigals as well as his sacred works such as the Vespers. The Choruses From L'Orfeo have been edited by the Italian composer, musicologist and editor Gian Francesco Malipiero(1882-1973). $7.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

In his libretto for “ Riccardo primoâ€, Paolo Rolli drew on Antonio Lotti’s opera “ Isacio tiranno †which had been performed in Venice in 1710. Handel needed a text with two great women’s roles, for the two best female singers of the day were members of his troupe – Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni . He had already written the operas “Alessandro†and “ Admeto †for them. He began composing “ Riccardo †in spring 1727, completing the first version on 16 May. However, following the death of King George I on 11 June 1727, the theatres remained closed. For Handel, who had become a British citizen in February 1727, the accession of George II to the throne offered new possibilities, and he embarked on a revision of the opera. With this, he was able to offer a new opera for the coronation festivities, the hero of which was one of King George’s charismatic forebears. From May onwards, Handel thoroughly revised the present score, wrote some parts anew and expanded it with particularly splendid music. Handel and Rolli also improved the plot and introduced patriotic elements to honour the British monarchy. The historic background is the third crusade against Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt and Syria , who had recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. Although King Richard I captured Cyprus and together with French crusaders stormed the fortress of Akko in the Holy Land, the crusade ended with a ceasefire and Jerusalem remained in Saladin’s hands. Richard was given the title ‘Coeur-de-lion‹’ by the English for his great military ability and bravery, although the Sicilians had first given him this name because of his relentless cruelty in clashes around Messina . The vocal score is based on the Halle Handel Edition volume published in 2005, edited by Terence Best, and contains the second version of the opera which was premiered in November 1727.

Oratorio in three parts-In quite characteristic fashion for the times Handel&rs...(+)
Oratorio in three parts-In quite characteristic fashion for the times Handel’s opera “Alessandro” looks at various episodes in the life and rule of Alexander the Great (356 323 BC). This legendary warrior and military commander conquered large parts of the world before meeting an untimely end at the age of 32. A central conflict in Handel’s opera is Alessandro being in love with two women Lisaura and Rossane who compete for his favour. In addition his claim to be of divine parentage is underlined occasioning him to demand the subservience of his followers which meets with vigorous disapproval.Handel composed “Alessandro” for the Royal Academyof Music to a libretto by Paolo Antonio Rolli in the 1725/26 season. The work was premiered at the King’s Theatre in London on 5 May 1726. “Alessandro” was the first of five operas for the Royal Academy operas which saw Handel compose for three of the most famous singers of his time: Francesco Bernardi (called Senesino) Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni.Ortensio Mauro’s libretto “La superbia d’Alessandro ” which was performed for the first time in Hanover in 1690 in a musical setting by Agostino Steffani and staged again in the city the following year under the title “Il zelo di Leonato” but with numerous alterations served as the source text for Handel’s “Alessandro”. One of the main aspects Rolli had to consider when preparing the libretto for the London performances was to keep the roles of the famous singers of the Royal Academy well balanced yet at the same time to engineer a musical contest between the prima donnas Cuzzoni and Bordoni (Lisaura and Rossane) as well. From a business point of view it made good sense for such rivalry would surely increase public interest in the opera. It is no longer possible to ascertain which changes Handel made during the following performance series of the 1727/28 season. For the performance series of 1732/33 Handel made substantial revisions to the opera: six numbers were deleted in their entirety the finale in part as well and the recitatives were made much shorter with the parts of Cleone and Leonato omitted

Ed. critica di Alessandro Borin - ril. brochure-La Gloria E Imeneo RV 687 belongs to a group of so-called ‘French serenatas’ by Antonio Vivaldi namely a series of works composed and performed between the mid-1710s and mid-1720s of the eighteenth century in celebration of important recurrent and non-recurrent events relating to the Kingdom of France and its diplomatic representatives resident in Italy. This serenata was indeed commissioned from Vivaldi by the French ambassador in Venice Jacques-Vincent Languet Count of Gergy on the occasion of the wedding of Louis XV to the Polish princess Maria Leszczyska and was performed during a festa that took place inthe ambassador’s garden on the evening of 12 September 1725.This critical edition is based on the autograph score held by Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria of Turin. It also includes an Introduction that describes the genesis and the first performance of the Serenata the state of the sources and its musical content. The critical edition includes an apparatus that records all the variants between the autograph score and the secondary collate sources and a diplomatic- interpretative edition of the poetic text inferred – since no libretto has come down to us – by the words underlaid to the notes in the manuscript of the serenata.

In his libretto for “Riccardo Primo” Paolo Rolli drew on Antonio Lotti’s opera “Isacio tiranno” which had been performed in Venice in 1710. Handel needed a text with two great women’s roles for the two best female singers of the day were members of his troupe – Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni. He had already written the operas “Alessandro” and “Admeto” for them. He began composing “Riccardo Primo” in spring 1727 completing the first version on 16 May. However following the death of King George I on 11 June 1727 the theatres remained closed. For Handel who had become a British citizen in February 1727 the accession of George II to the throne offered new possibilities and he embarked on a revision of the opera. With this he was able to offer a new opera for the coronation festivities the hero of which was one of King George’s charismatic forebears. From May onwards Handel thoroughly revised the present score wrote some parts anew and expanded it with particularly splendid music. Handel and Rolli also improved the plot and introduced patriotic elements to honour the British monarchy. The historic background is the third crusade against Saladin the Sultan of Egypt and Syria who had recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. Although King Richard I captured Cyprus and together with French crusaders stormed the fortress of Akko in the Holy Land the crusade ended with a ceasefire and Jerusalem remained in Saladin’s hands. Richard was given the title ‘Coeur-de-lion’ by the English for his great military ability and bravery although the Sicilians had first given him this name because of his relentless cruelty in clashes around Messina . The vocal score is based on the Halle Handel Edition volume published in 2005 edited by Terence Best and contains the second version of the opera which was premiered in November 1727. Performance material available for hire. Based on the Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition. Original Italian text with German singing translation. Straightforward and easy-to-play Piano reduction.

Oper in 3 Akten. Par HASSE JOHANN ADOLF. Hasse's Cleofide of 1731 can be regarded as the zenith of his creative output – not least of all because he integrated several of his greatest arias from earlier works into this opera. The theme from antiquity 'Alexander's conquests in India' was perfectly suited to flatter August the Strong, a rather unsuccessful commander-in-chief, who at that moment was occupied with the reorganization of his armies. For performance at the Court of Dresden, Metastasio's original libretto was reworked by Michelangelo Boccardi. As a result, the title of the opera was changed from 'Alessandro nell' Indie' to 'Cleofide' and Faustina Bordoni, the prima donna and wife of Johann AdolfHasse, became the protagonist of the story. Musically, the opera reflected the style of the time. Hasse's expressive and natural style was admired and appreciated by the public professional musicians alike. The vocal parts were 'tailor-made' for the singers and in performing this work the outstanding soloists and the orchestra could shine. Hasse always tried to get the utmost from his musicians and in the case of 'Cleofide' he achieved a 100% success. The Carus edition of 'Cleofide, ' which has been published as a part of the Hasse-Werkausgabe, is the very first printed edition of this work. It is based primarily on the original parts used for the first performance in 1731 and presents both an accurate musicological rendering of the sources as well as a practical performance edition. / Opéra-opérette / Répertoire / Solistes, Choeur, 2 Flûtes Traversières, 2 Hautboi
