The Okefenokee Swamp is slated as one of the seven natural wonders of Georgia. The name has two different meanings: first being bubbling waters, and the second meaning Land of Trembling Earth, so named because the peat bog (land) moves when you walk on it, because it is actually floating on water. Although the Oconi are the earliest known inhabitants, this piece is written to honor the Chehaw Indians who gave the swamp its name. The beginning of the piece depicts the grandeur of the over 438,000 acre swamp (one of the five largest swamps in the world). The middle section includes a flute solo that depicts the life of the early inhabitants. For a more authentic portrayal, the use of a recorder, especially an alto recorder should be used. The piece ends with a spirited dance, beginning with the thunderous roll of the timpani and bass drums. The Okefenokee Swamp is slated as one of the seven natural wonders of Georgia. With this collection of 26 folk hymns, author Peter Irvine brings shape-note music into the home, and provides adaptable music for a variety of instrumental ensembles. This format allows for instruments such as the mountain dulcimer, Native American or transverse flute, penny whistle, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and so forth. Anyone can play shape-note music, even when Sacred Harp gatherings or â??singingsâ? are not easily accessible. Th e hymns in this collection are drawn from various classic shape-note sources like Southern Harmony (1835) and The Sacred Harp (1844). Presented in lead-sheet format (melody, chords, and lyrics), and written in keys accessible to all C instruments and several D instruments such as the penny whistle and mountain dulcimer, the material offers plenty of arrangements. Hymns can be sung by a soloist, in unison by a small group with chordal accompaniment, or a mixed ensemble.

Badla nds occur throughout the world, and are represented by dramatic terrain created by sediment that is deposited in layers, then solidifies and  is eroded over millions of years. These processes leave stark, but beautiful structures in a harsh and alien landscape. Badlands opens with a first theme that depicts the stark emptiness of the badland terrain. This moves to a brooding, mysterious second theme followed by variations on this theme. A brief lyrical theme and a return to the second theme follow. The piece ends with a return of the first theme for a dramatic finish.Badlands occur throughout the world, but many of the most striking are in Canada and the United States. This dramatic terrain is created by sediment that is deposited in layers, then solidifies and is eroded over millions of years. These processes leave stark, but beautiful structures in a harsh and alien landscape. The regions known as badlands are frequently difficult to impossible to navigate on foot and are often considered to be sacred lands by cultures that live in these regions. Badlands opens with a first theme that depicts the stark emptiness of the badland terrain. This moves to a brooding, mysterious second theme followed by variations on this theme. A brief lyrical theme and a return to the second theme follow. The piece ends with a return of the first theme for a dramatic finish.I enjoyed writing this piece and hope your students will enjoy playing these contrasting styles. Additionally, I hope that you will find the piece beneficial in teaching important musical concepts.Peter Terry, 2018.

Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago observes a hallowed annual tradition called Siamsa na nGael, a Celtic celebration of songs, dance, and story. The organizers of this annual showcase of Irish talent saw fit on separate occasions to commission hailed Irish composer Liam Lawton to write three major works: Patrick the Shepherd Boy, Brigid of Kildare, and Kevin of Glendalough. Lawton, with the help of the combined choirs of Old St. Patrick’s, recorded several selections from these three works plus a number of newly composed songs to create his new CD, Sacred Land. This beautiful recording includes lush arrangements of songs like “Far Beyond,†“The House of the Lord,†“Sing of a Lady,†and many more. Song after song simply overflows with the hope, mercy, and strength that is found when one searches for God.
