Ten Secret Doors - Suite For Orchestra was composed by Swedish composer Britta Byström in 2010. Commissioned by Västerås Sinfonietta and premiered by VS conducted by Johannes Gustavsson on April 14 2011. Programme note: Each of the ten movements in the orchestral suite Ten Secret Doors contains a transformation a stage-change in sound meant to give a feeling that the music 'slips away'. In the first movement this transformation is achieved by a sudden orchestral sound change from tutti to solo. There follow changes from muted sound to open sound from wind section to string section from bow play to pizzicato play. In the last movement there is a trumpet solo that is first played on stage then off stage - a transformation from close to distant. I pictured the ending of every movement as the opening rather than the closing of a door.In this work there is also a small musical quotation from 'Von fremden Ländern und Menschen' (from Robert Schumann's famous Kinderszenen). This phrase snuck into music as a greeting from another suite characterized by many short movements of flightiness and lightness.(Britta Byström)

From the Suite To Gozzi's Fairy Tale Drama-The Gozzi's Turandot - in one form or another - occupied Busoni at various times in the years 1904-1917. He was very fond of fantastical and magical tales: his immediately preceding work was the Piano Concerto Op. 39 BV247 which included music from an unfinished adaptatioon of Adam Oehlenschläger's Aladdin. In 1904 Busoni began sketching incidental music for Gozzi's Chinese fable. He also arranged a concert suite which was first performed in 1905 and published in 1906. A production of Gozzi's play with Busoni's music was mounted by Max Reinhardt in Berlin in 1911 and for the second and last time in London in 1913. This transcription of the first movement of Busoni's Turandotsuite was created for George A. Treviño and his superb Lopez High School Band of Brownsville Texas. The piece was premiered in February 2017 at the Texas Music Educators Association convention on the occasion of the Lopez band's 6A Honor Band performance.

It may be performed by string or full orchestra, and, for ultimate flexibility, each movement can be performed alone. Featuring the 'Sarabande' and 'Gavotte,' careful attention has been paid to maintain the original intentions of the composer in this piece. The music of Handel is considered the culmination of the Baroque period of music history and his Water Music (1717) has endured in popularity for nearly 300 years! Performed from a barge traveling on the River Thames King George I is said to have liked the music so much that he ordered it repeated several times. Originally three suites each consisting of multiple movements Johnnie Vinson has skillfully adapted this arrangement for young players using Alla Hornpipe from the Suite in D Major and the Air and Allegro from the Suite in F Major. Study Score-Declaration Suite consists of the orchestral movements from 'Declaration - a symphonic narrative' for Orchestra two solo speakers and speaking chorus. In its original form the work includes a setting of theDeclaration of Independence.The composition was comissioned by Station WRC and WRC-TV of the National Broadcasting Company Washington D. C. for the National Symphony Orchestra of that city and was composed during thesummer and fall of 1956. Par VILHELMSEN INGEBJORG. 'The Cosmographic Mystery' outlines the great mysteries and secrets of the universe. The musical foundation is a tribute to composer Gustav Holst, and his suite 'The Planets'. Each movement from the suite is quoted in the course of the piece. The title is taken from a book by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler, which was published in the 17th century. The book explains Kepler's cosmological theory that the distance relationship between the planets could be understood in light of the five Platonic solids. The theory proposes that the solids dictate the structure of the universe through geometry. Score-St. Lawrence Suite was commissioned by the Power Authority of the State of New York and the Hydro-Electric Power Comission of Ontario for the ceremony September 5 1958 marking the delivery of commercialhydro-electric power from the joint Robert Moses Power Dam and Robert H. Saunders St. Lawrence Generating Station. At this opening of the great St. Lawrence Power Project the composer conducted the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corpsmilitary band in the first performance of this music.St. Lawrence Suite consists of four commemorative movements. Although folk tunes are not used literally the idiom of the work is simple and folk-like incharacter.I. Dedication: lyrical and atmospheric evoking the open country and waterways.II. Quickstep: gay and implying movement and development.III. Chansonette:simple and song-like with an 'old-world' touch.IV. Commemoration March: vigorous and driving culminating in a transformed exposition of the opening 'Dedication' theme.Throughout the work the composermakes use of two solo Trumpets whose antiphon calls serve to introduce and comment on these movements. They symbolise in a general sense the two host countries on either side of the United States-Canadian border. In the finalmovements these Trumpets blend with the band in fanfares that bring the work to a close.

Par JACOB GORDON. Of all of Gordon Jacob's major contributions to the British wind band repertoire, the William Byrd Suite (written in 1923) stands as his most-often programmed work. Though originally based on six movements from William Byrd's Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, this setting for developing band incorporates two contrasting movements including 'The Earle of Oxford's Marche' and 'Wolsey's Wilde.' Like Jacob's wind band work, the music is not a mere transcription from the original keyboard collection, but rather stylized with his own inventive musical spirit for modern concert band. A wealth of material here that opens doors to teachable moments as musical textures---dynamic contrasts, articulations, scoring options---are continually changing. Bravo!
