The choral collection Gospels and Spirituals transports us into the fascinating world of African American folk songs. Around 30 gospels and spirituals have been arranged for mixed choir, unaccompanied or with piano. The choral parts sometimes divide, and occasionally solo parts (or even a small choral group) are required. As well as American classics (e.g. Amazing grace, Go down Moses, Kumbaya, Deep river, Down by the riverside, Good News, O when the saints, Nobody knows, Joshua fit the battle of Jericho), the collection also contains some discoveries from the beginnings of the genre. Just under half the arrangements were specially commissioned for the collection. Young composers from the USA (such as Courtney Carey, Marques Garrett) and arrangers from Canada, Denmark, and Germany (including Mark Sirett, John Hoybye, Thomas Gabriel, Carsten Gerlitz, Gunther Martin Gottsche, and Hans Ludemann) have contributed to this stylistically extremely varied choral collection. The medium difficulty level will enable many choirs to get to grips with the gospel style, something which perhaps few of them are very familiar with. Tips from the editors on performance, and a CD recording with a selection of the arrangements will help with learning the pieces. With their deep and emotional symbolism of captivity and repression on the one hand and redemption and freedom on the other hand, these Gospel settings are well-suited for many uses in concerts and church services. The arrangements with their catchy rhythms, groove, their blue notes and other elements from Jazz and Blues and the principles of call-and-response will move performers and audiences in equal measure. * arrangements of around 30 spirituals and gospels for four-part mixed choir * a cappella or with keyboard accompaniment * medium difficulty level * a good introduction for choirs with little previous experience of this repertoire * includes popular classics such as Amazing grace, Deep river, Go down Moses, Good News, Nobody knows, Joshua fit the battle of Jericho * wide variety of styles with many new arrangements * CD recordings helps with learning and rehearsing the pieces. Score available separately - see item CA.210400.

Lately, the 'choir pope' Clytus Gottwald has increasingly arranged late Romantic repertoire pieces for a cappella choir. He said: 'The idea to make music from around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century accessible to choirs in transcriptions emerged from the understanding that choral a cappella music had been underdeveloped at that time.' In order to realise this idea, Gottwald focussed on pieces from Wagner, Mahler via Ravel, Debussy to Messiaen and Holliger. This arrangement is based on an original piano song by Paul Hindemith on a poem by Else Lasker-Schuler, and its soft and expressive sound makes it particularly suitable for a choral setting.

Zibuo kle Martinaityte tells about the background of Aletheia (2022) for mixed choir (SSSSAAAATTTTBBBB):†Aletheia is variously translated from Greek as 'unconcealedness', 'revealing' or 'unclosedness'. It is uncovering of the Truth - the one we are afraid to face, the truth that can only be expressed directly through the pre-verbal communication. How do you find words for the horrors of the war, for all unimaginable global atrocities? How do you even allow yourself to feel it out? Solely through art, through music that offer a safe space and a formalized framework for processing these accumulated complex emotions and sharing them with others in a moment. This piece has no verbal text and it is based on various combinations of vowels and consonants, thus connecting us on a deeper level through the immediate emotional experience. The work is commissioned by the Lithuanian National Radio (LRT Klasika) The war in Ukraine in spring of 2022 had an impact on all of us and shattered my deeply rooted Lithuanian identity. When the freedomis threatened and innocent people are dying, it is hard to make sense out of the reality.Yet there is poetry even in the worst nightmares. I was imagining that the only instrument people have even in situations of destruction, in the midst of the war, is their VOICE. It brought back memories of my youth when 'Singing revolution' was taking place in the Baltic countries. Human voice was the only weapon that people used to express their determination for freedom and independence. Voice is our first and the very last instrument we have in our lifetime. Thinking in these terms brings almost a sacred dimension to the voice as an expression of the life itself - from the very first baby's scream until the last breath and whisper.†Duration c. 15' The works of New York -based Lithuanian composer Zibuokle Martinaityte (b. 1973) have been lauded as breathtaking and profoundly moving. Her stimulating music bristles with energy and tension and revolves often around the subject of beauty, which she calls botha guiding principle and an aesthetic measure for sonic quality.

This arrangement of a moving spiritual includes enhanced original text. The piece utilizes each individual voice part for canonic material in the chorus to create a building foundation towards the cornerstone of the message, supporting the alto soloist as they deliver the melody in a way that hearkens back to how it would have been sung as a field holler during the years of African American slavery. The arrangement is suitable for a mixed collegiate choir, advanced high school choir or large community choir. “Hold On Just a Little While Longer” is a great piece for concerts to feature a strong alto soloist, or themed around hope, perseverance or African American music. This piece conveys a message of hope and endurance for all in the face of life's challenges.

The Blue of Distance for a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) was composed in 2010 and premiered by Jauna Muzika with conductor Vaclovas Augustinas, on October 25, 2010 at the Gaida festival in Vilnius, Lithuania. Martinaitytė tells: When searching for the lyrics for my choral piece, I encountered an alluring phrase the blue of distance. It remained just a poetical-philosophical hint since the text itself doesn’t get utilized at all. Instead, the function of the lyrics is given to a set of speech sounds – mostly humming or the sung open vowels a–e–i†o–u. In one part of the piece these vowels/letters appear as chords, they determine the succession of entrances of choral voices and their interrelationships.Duration: c. 13-16'The works of New York -based Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (b. 1973) have been lauded as breathtaking and profoundly moving. Her stimulating music bristles with energy and tension and revolves often around the subject of beauty, which she calls both a guiding principle and an aesthetic measure for sonic quality.

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) is one of the most important composers of Catholic church music in the 20th century. Apart from more than 100 organ works and masses, he also wrote numerous motets. The present four-part motet Freu dich, du werte Christenheit for mixed a cappella choir (SATB) was written in 1975. This old Resurrection song from the 16th century is based on a setting by the Franco-Flemish composer Johannes des Cleve (around 1529-1582) which has been skillfully transferred by Schroeder to the modern age with subtle harmonies. The tenor voice sings the cantus firmus and is embedded in archaic-seeming sounds typical of Schroeder by the other voices. This three-verse Resurrection song of about five minutes is perfect for church services at Easter.

This publication presents under one cover various short works for sundry orchestral scorings. Larghetto for Orchestra is MacMillan's orchestration (2017) of his celebrated Miserere for a cappella mixed choir (2009), a setting in Latin of Psalm 51, 'Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy', the penitential text famously set in the 17th century by Gregorio Allegri. The Larghetto orchestration was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Manfred Honeck's 10th Anniversary as Music Director. Memoire imperiale is one of a number of variations on General John Reids march tune Old Gaul commissioned from Scottish composers to mark the centenary in 1994 of the Faculty of Music at Edinburgh University. The Faculty was established following a bequest by General Reid (1721-1807), a former law student at the University and a renowned flute player and composer of marches for the BritishArmy, and he asked that an annual concert be organised at which one or more of his compositions be played. Composed in 2012 for the Britten Sinfonia, One is a monody in which a single line is passed around the instruments, painting it with different colours as it emerges and develops. Lasting only a few minutes, its singularity is maintained until blossoming in the lastfew bars. For Sonny (2011, orch 2013) and Ein Lamplein verlosch (2018, orch 2019) are short, private memorial tributes originally for string quartet and here rescored for string orchestra. Hirta was composed in 2016 as part of Deccas The Lost Songs of St Kilda project. Nearly a century ago, the last 36 residents were evacuated from the most remote part of the British Isles, St Kilda, an isolated archipelago off the beautiful and rugged western coast of Scotland. After 86 years, the music of St Kilda was rediscovered, recorded in a Scottish care home by Trevor Morrison, an elderly man who had been taught piano by an inhabitant of St Kilda. The songs were 'reimagined' for the Decca album by various.

For SATB unaccompanied Setting a well-known poem by Percy Shelley, Love's Philosophy is a sweet and tender choral song reflecting on the idea of love with reference to nature and the interdependent relationships evident in the world around us. Mellifluous choral writing and sighing interjections convey the theme of unrequited or lost love.
