Originally, the present work - with a Latin text and the title Non nobis, Domine - was a gift written by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in November 1830 for the 25th birthday of his sister Fanny. Five years later he decided to have it printed, and his publisher Simrock urged him to produce a German translation as well. It is in this form that the setting of Psalm 115 has become known alongside four other Psalms of Mendelssohn's in a compositional scope ranging from church to concert hall. The Urtext edition is based on the main sources, the autograph and the first edition.

The first great orchestral psalmMendelssohn' s first great orchestral psalm took almost six years to complete, from the initial sketches and the first version of 1830 to the final version of 1835. Its premiere which took place at the Leipzig Gewandhaus did not take place until 1838.Unlike his other orchestral psalms, Mendelssohn took the Latin words from the Vulgate as his principal text which stems from Psalm 113. When he later prepared his own German translation, he made use of Psalm 115 from the Luther Bible. This edition by the leading Mendelssohn authority John Michael Cooper incorporates all the relevant sources. In accordance with the work's genesis, the vocal parts are underlaid with the Latin text, and the German text appears underneath.Rounding off this Urtext edition are an informative Foreword and detailed Critical Commentary. The piano reduction stems from Mendelssohn himself.* Informative Foreword in the score (Ger/Eng)* Text underlay in two languages (Lat/Ger)* Piano reduction by the composer

Sea Songs, commissioned jointly by Ars Nova Copenhagen and Glasgow Concert Halls, is a kind of sequel to Martland's Street Songs (originally written for the Kings Singers and Evelyn Glennie). As with the earlier piece, Martland made use of to the library of the English Folk Song and Dance Society at Cecil Sharp House in north London.I wanted specifically to find texts that were not just the usual nautical heave-ho sort of thing, but instead explored the dangers and hardships still being experienced by sailors as recently as the early 19th century. I was also very happy to see in these texts the sense of camaraderie and mutual support that existed between the sailors. (Steve Martland)Dance to your Daddy sets the scene of a sailor's wife at home, dandling her baby son and singing to him about his daddy away fishing, and about the future. Both the tune and the words come from the Northumberland area around Newcastle. This song is very well known in the UK and gave the title to a famous television series When the boat comes in.Fire Down Below is about the effects of fire - a constant danger on board wooden ships. At the end of this song the words take on an extended meaning: Fire in our hearts for the friends that we love. The Dead Horse is about the initial month of work without pay in which all seamen had to take part. They referred to it as the dead horse - hence the expression to flog a dead horse when something is a waste of time. The seamen resented this unpaid time, and the text expresses their frustrations metaphorically by listing what they would do to the horse! The music's frantic gallop alludes to the horse's desperation.Although The Sea Martyrs presents itself as a ballad, this text has a more literary feel, and unlike the other songs it doesn't include a chorus refrain. It concerns the sailors' lack of pay, the consequences of asking for pay (being hanged!), and the poverty of their families at home. The poem portrays the sailors' deaths as an almost religious sacrifice to help future seamen. At the end of the work, the opening of Dance to your Daddy returns as a kind of descant, sung by an angel calling to the hanged men. Especially commissioned by the Dean & Chapter of Westminster for performance at the funeral service of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19 September 2022. The text, from St Paul's Letter to the Romans, perfectly reflects the late Queen's steadfast Christian faith, as demonstrated by her unswerving devotion to her destiny as a national and world leader, and as personally expressed in her annual Christmas broadcasts. “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nothing present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, whichis in Christ Jesus our Lord. Alleluia. Amen.†The work expresses hope, triumph and rejoicing; while fitting for memorial and remembrance services in general. it will also be found suitable at Easter and for general use. As an alternative to “Allelulia,†a verse from the Book of Revelation is provided, for use during penitential seasons. “Composer Sir James MacMillan's anthem hits the right note ... He joins a list of composers of royal funeral music stretching back to Henry Purcell and George Frideric Handel.†–The Times.

This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Möhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.
