This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Möhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.

Contempora ry ballad; easily learned; This gentle ballad is a fresh invocation to God's constant presence in our lives and worship. The Holy Spirit is always with us-sometimes we just need to be still. Gently contemplative, this choral almost sings itself. Lyricist Jennifer Dowell follows her successful “Jesus and the Children†with a memorable Pentecost text and Michael Barrett contributes a great melody. “SpiritSong†is easily learned and is appropriate for youth and adult choirs. Be still...and know that He is God.

This work is my second for a solo woodwind and a solo percussionist, following Firewing: The Flame and the Moth for oboe and percussion by nine years. The earlier piece followed a specific story line, and pitted the oboe against the percussionist as both adversary and lover. In Spirit Realms, my aim was not only to juxtapose the very different sounds of flute (plus alto flute and piccolo) against a large array of percussion, but also to attempt three different meditative spaces, each named for a different type of spiritual practice. The musical means of expression is very different for each of the three movements (as is the instrumentation), although they share a common scale-source: the looped pentatonic scale I have been developing over the last several years. The first movement is called Prayer Tunnel, and is named for the Eskimo practice of solo meditation within a tunnel of ice blocks. This is said to be a means of overcoming demons within, and in my musical rendering it takes the form of an unaccompanied alto flute solo. The flute begins rather angrily, full of tension, but in the course of the solo passage manages to slowly unwind. The percussionist then plays the exact same music the alto flute had played....on seven tuned cymbals. Toward the end, the alto flute re-enters, its original meditation having fused with its mirror. Kiva represents the circular, subterranean pit in which the Anasazi practiced their religion, a form of which still can be found in the Hopi tribes of the American southwest. These are not spaces for solo meditation, but rather a group meeting place in which only the sanctified are permitted. After an introductory invocation (dove call), the music begins. At first, it is flowing, in a repetitive double-five meter. It then traces several sections, with metric shifts forcing the pulse to race faster and faster, until it halves itself in the coda and returns to the exact pulse of the beginning. The flutist here uses the C flute, and the percussionist plays on both pitched (marimba) and unpitched instruments (various drums and struck sources). Zendo is the meditation room used by Zen Buddhists. My music begins with another invocation (wind chimes, temple cup gongs, and temple blocks), then moves on to a slow subject stated by the flute. The subject is taken up by the vibraphone, and after several modulations and tempo changes, the flutist takes up the piccolo. The music continues higher and higher, and faster and faster (Zen meditation is NOT all about becoming lost!) until it breaks free at the very end. The percussionist is put through his paces in this movement, having to reach a staggering number of instruments in a short time. Spirit Realms was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the Armstrong Duo. -- Dan Welcher.

Free Spirit offers a fresh new sound from composer Sean O'Loughlin. It has a uniquely American sound to it with open chords contrasted with lush flowing melodies that interplay back and forth in a struggle for supremacy that is finally settled with both co-existing together in the end for a wonderful punctuated ending.Free Spirit is a dynamic composition for the more advanced string ensemble. Full of lyrical and rhythmic passages, the music is a great way to showcase the musicianship of your ensemble. The rhythmic motive at the beginning serves as a connecting thread throughout the com- position. The rhythmic accents are added in m. 5 to increase the intensity and provide a slightly different color to the music. Some interplay follows at the section at m. 13. A lyrical melody then starts to soar over top of the rhythmic motive at m. 27. Bring out the contrast in the different styles simultaneously. The rhythmic energy fades away at m. 36 and gives way to a lush, haunting passage. The rhythmic motive quickly returns at m. 42 for some further development alongside the lyrical melody. A slight departure from the tonal center at m. 53 brings us back to a full presentation at m. 62. Some imitation and counterpoint lead us back to a recapitulation of the central musical ideas at m. 85. The lyrical melody returns as an echo of its former self at m. 100. This leads to a final build-up section at m. 110. Keep the accents punchy and crisp throughout this passage. This climaxes at a tutti gesture to end the piece with fire.

A captivating prayer to the Holy Spirit. Many aspects of this anthem - modest choral and keyboard demands, the anthem's relative brevity and a message tailored for these frenetic times - contribute to its versatility. Excellent for prayer responses, benedictions and Pentecost celebrations.
