Fanfare for an Occasion was written to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Anglo Music Press, the publishing company dedicated to the works of British composer, Philip Sparke. It is a bright and festive work in which the main theme starts on the tenor instruments of the band before appearing as canonical imitation by all sections in turn. A short, repeated bridge passage leads to a second theme on the saxes that is taken up by the full band and leads back to a return of the main theme and a repeat of the second subject, which brings the fanfare to a brilliant close.

Variation s Paris, 1846 was composed specifically for the 25th anniversary of ‘Brass-Aux-Saxes⠙ in 2014, coincidentally the 150th anniversary of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. As a result, Philip Sparke created this work to pay homage to Adolphe Sax. The work is a series of variations based on one original theme and gives the ‘fanfare orchestra’ a unique and rare setting you would usually only find in Belgium, the Netherlands and parts of Japan. Consequently, this shows all of the different aspects of the band through both colour and technique.

This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the ‘Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare’ (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the ‘Sint Martinusfanfare’ from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin, a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin, who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement, the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. Thecontrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement, Allegro Molto Vivace’, could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis, the crown on the pastoral work of Martin, Bishop of Tours, Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle.

This piece was commissioned by Oyama City Symphonic Wind Orchestra to commemorate their 30th Anniversary. The composer was inspired by Oyama City’s slogan, ‘water, green and earth’, to write this festive fanfare. Following a gentle opening a fanfareleads to a magnificent chorale. This turns into a quickly moving energetic section with irregular rhythm. This is a short but dramatic piece that will make a brilliant concert opener.

Minerva by Jan Van der Roost was composed on the commission of the German “Musikverein Braunshausen†on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the orchestra. The composition, first performed on September 17, 1999, is not a street march but a concert march, just like Mercury and Arsenal. The use and variation of different rhythmic patterns gives the first part of this march a distinctly dynamic character. Two main themes are presented in several instrumental combinations. The theme from the trio, on the other hand, is characterized by a broad melodic approach using large intervals. This theme, wreathed by high woodwinds, is heard one more time after a contrasting newpart, but now in a somewhat slower tempo. The counterpoint in this part refers to the first part of the march. The brilliant ending suits a festive anniversary march!

Arsenal was composed for the 50th anniversary of the ‘Harmonie van het Spoorwegarsenaal’[ railroad arsenal], based in Mechelen (Belgium). Rather a stately concert march, it has beautiful themes and a broad melody in the trio. It was premiered in the Mechelen Cultural Center on the 11th of May 1996 during the solemn ceremony, opening the anniversary year and conducted by the composer. In the mean time, Arsenal has been recorded several times by such renowed performers like the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, the Black Dyke BB etc.
