Terri Lyne Carrington, Founder and Artistic Director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, has curated a wide range of jazz compositions written by women composers, from obscure to popular, historic to current, blues to bebop, and beyond in this important collection. These compositions are supplementary and alternatives to the “jazz standard†canon that has served students, teachers and professionals throughout the development of jazz music. The compositions span nearly a century, including Lil Hardin Armstrong's work from 1922 to songs written in 2021 by recent Institute graduates. It features 101 compositions from a remarkable range of acknowledged titans, young visionaries and unsung heroes in jazz: Mary Lou Williams, Alice Coltrane, esperanza spalding, Geri Allen, Maria Schneider, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Dorothy Ashby, Nubya Garcia, Nicole Mitchell and many others. The book includes a 1922 piece by the influential Lil Hardin Armstrong and songs written in 2021 by emerging artists from Carrington's Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. New Standards also celebrates the global world of jazz, from Chilean tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana to Japanese American pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and other international composers.

Suffs is the Tony Award®-winning musical that's making history on Broadway! Crafted by the supremely talented Shaina Taub, she's shattered ceilings by becoming the first woman to single-handedly snag Tony Awards for both Best Book and Best Score in the same year. Beyond its Tony Award® glory, Suffs has clinched the title of Best Musical from the Outer Critics Circle, bagged a pair of Drama Desk Awards including one for Best Score, and it's been hailed as the season's most heart-stirring musical by the Chicago Tribune. This musical dives into the lives of the suffragist women, affectionately known as âSuffs.â These women weren't just intellectual giants in their pursuit for the voteâthey were complex beings, marked by their persistence, humor, and the fiery passion driving their cause. Some of the most famous and enduring songs from “the great American songbook†have been selected and edited especially for singers in this landmark series, with songs from George & Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and many others. The music all dates from the 1920s to the early 1960s, in a musical style that pre-dates the rock era. The majority of the songs appear in all four volumes, though some songs are uniquely in the women's volumes or men's volumes. Unlike standard piano/vocal sheet music, the edition does not have the melody in the piano accompaniment, which gives the singer more vocal freedom. Keys have been carefully chosen for each voice type. Each volume also includes a historical note about each song, often citing recording artists who became associated with a song.
