The Mass in B flat, op. 172, dates from 1892 and was published in two authentic versions. The instrumental accompaniment can be played either by an ensemble of wind instruments or by organ. Between Gloria and Credo Rheinberger placed a powerfully expressive a cappella Ave Maria, probably due to the fact that the Mass was first performed on a major feast day of the Virgin Mary: on the feast of Purification (Candlemas) in Breslau Cathedral. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5017200.

Matsushita's Ave Maria is a very intimate short unaccompanied piece of true inward devotion. An experienced composer, Matsushita has chosen a tonal musical language for this homophonic piece. His enchanting modulations, well-placed and precisely-judged, are particularly effective without overloading the simple character of the work. All the parts are written in comfortable registers throughout and without divisi, so that the piece can easily be performed by all choirs. In short: a jewel! The original version finally availableHeinrich Marschner is considered the most significant German opera composer between Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner. Among his most important works is his opera Der Vampyr (The Vampire) premiered in 1828, with which he celebrated his breakthrough. The composer's autograph is regarded as lost, and a score was not published in Marschner's lifetime. It was only in 1925 that Hans Pfitzner produced an edition that must be described as flawed. Breitkopf & Hartel has prepared the complete, practical performance material based on the score published in the Das Erbe deutscher Musik (German Music Heritage) in the version authorized by Marschner and tops it off with a new piano reduction [or piano score?] that is very playable. The splendid music is worth it. Monteverdi' s Vespers of 1610 is a work which has both fascinated and perplexed musicologists and performers for many years. It forms by far the larger part of the composer's first significant publication of sacred music, entitled: Of the most blessed virgin a Mass for six voices for church choirs, and Vespers for more voices with several sacred concertos suitable for princely chapels or apartments. By the time this publication appeared, Monteverdi had been in the service of the Gonzaga court at MantUrauffuhrung for at least 18 years, and he was seeking a change of employment, so that the dedication of the volume to the reigning pope, Paul V, may be interpreted as a form of self-advertisement. Originally issued as an Urtext study score, the edition is based closely on the extant printed source, the set of partbooks published at Venice in 1610, and retains the original note values, key and mensuration signatures.
