This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The ââ¬ÅBenedictus ¢â¬Â is for SATB divisi and begins with a short 6/8 declamation, then moves into a section where the rhythmic idea is set in a sort of off-the-beat fashion, with all parts divisi playing against each other. A unison section with the off-the-beat motif follows. A majestic ââ¬ÅHosannaâ â¬Â follows. The ââ¬ÅAgnus Deiââ¬Â is set in a rubato triple meter in a homophonic style with close chords (also divisi.) At the ââ¬Åmiserere,à ¢â¬Â the choir 1/choir 2 call and response motif from the ââ¬ÅGloria⠬ returns. That same motif continues into the ââ¬Ådona nobis pacem,ââ¬Â as the movement (and the entire Mass) ends with a long decrescendo into a quiet call, ââ¬ÅPacem.⠬ Duration 7:33.

This publication offers a source-critical edition of Mozartâ??s fragmentary â??Requiemâ? as well as an alternative to the traditional SüÃ?mayr version. It makes it possible to perform 1) the fragment, identified in print in both the score and the parts, 2) the authentic sections left incomplete by Mozart, now in a stylistically appropriate orchestration, and 3) those sections missing entirely in the fragment, newly added in Mozartâ??s idiom taking into account historical additions by SüÃ?mayr and Eybler. When completing the fragment, the editor drew on comprehensive comparative and analytical studies of Mozartâ??s church style and compositional workmanship. The influence of Handel and Bach manifested in his final years, particularly in the â??Requiemâ? fragment, is taken into account in those sections requiring completion or fresh composition. At two points readers may choose between alternative movements (or sections), since proceeding from SüÃ?mayrâ??s historical version, two divergent options cannot be weighed against each other but each one may well reflect Mozartâ??s intentions: the â??Lacrimosaâ? may end with or without â??Amenâ? fugue, and the â??Sanctusâ? may begin in the customary D major or in D minor. Above all, this makes it possible to retain the B-flat major â??Hosannaâ? from SüÃ?mayrâ??s autograph, a movement which, until now, has not been appreciated as compositionally flawless.â?¢ Scholarly-critical edition of the â??Requiemâ? fragmentâ?¢ With performance material for presentation of1) the fragment,2) a version with completions of the authentic Mozart sections or3) a full completion consistent with Mozartâ??s musical idiomâ?¢ Missing sections were completed by drawing from other fragmentary sacred works by Mozartâ?¢ Added or completed sections incorporate influences from Bach and Handel already detectable in the fragmentâ?¢ Alternative performance options for the â??Lacrimosaâ?, â??Sanctusâ? and â??Benedictusâ?â ?¢ Easy-to-play piano reductionâ?¢ Extensive foreword (Ger/Eng) on the workâ??s history, reception and modern completions, with analytical stylistic critiqueâ?¢ Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng), partly available on the Bärenreiter websiteâ?¢ Tried and tested on many occasions, e.g. at Harvard University, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Monadnock Music Festival (New Hampshire), in Salt Lake City (Utah), as well as in radio broadcasts (NDR, SWR, WDR) and CD recordings with Concerto Köln, Chorwerk Ruhr and Florian Helgath (â??Le Disque classique du jourâ? from francemusique.fr and three nominations for Opus Klassik 2021 in the categories â??Ensembleâ?, â??Choral Recordingâ? and â??Editorial Achievementâ?) You will find a detailed brochure on the new completion of Mozart's Requiem here.

Alth ough the musical archives of the world have yielded up their fair share of 'lost' or forgotten early works by the great composers, few might be regarded with more surprise and excitement than A Cambridge Mass by Ralph Vaughan Williams. It was completed in 1899 shortly before his 27th birthday and was successfully submitted for the Cambridge degree of Doctor of Music, but remained unperformed and unpublished till now. The work that has emerged from more than a century of obscurity is indeed a remarkable achievement, lasting 45 minutes and written for full orchestra, double chorus and SATB soloists. A setting of the Credo, Sanctus, Hosanna and Benedictus of the Mass, with an orchestral Offertorium as its second movement, this richly prescient musical outpouring shows the young composer's mastery of complex counterpoint no less than of bold melodic writing and striking orchestral gestures. By far the largest of VW's works predating A Sea Symphony of 1909, A Cambridge Mass already exhibits a command of large choral forces, inspired in part by the example of Verdi's Requiem, which the composer had recently encountered, and which influenced him profoundly. While there are also echoes of Bach, the Viennese classical masters and of Brahms and Dvorak, the current and pulse of the music, and the grand conception, are unmistakably those of Vaughan Williams himself. Orchestral material available for rental (Ref. HL399).

Mozartâ €™s magnificent unfinished “Great Mass in C minor K. 427†is impressive not only for its monumentality and musical beauty but for its fragmentary state which has fascinated scholars and performers for decades.Working together with the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Barenreiter now presents a new edition of this work, reflecting the cutting edge of scholarship while doing justice to the needs of performers.High scholarly standards, the completion and reconstruction of movements: this pioneering publication incorporates all this in order to come as close as possible to the work itself:- The “Kyrie†and “Gloriaâ€, both of which survive complete in Mozart’s hand, are edited in accordance with scholarly standards.- The first two sections of the “Credo†have been meticulously completed by the editor Ulrich Leisinger, drawing on original Mozart compositions e.g. the aria “Deh vieni non tardar†from “The Marriage of Figaro†and paying attention to a stylistically appropriate and transparent sound.- The “Sanctus†and “Benedictus†(with the “Hosannaâ€), which are either incomplete or survive only in secondary sources, have been reconstructed by the editor.Sections without any known sources are left out in this edition. Rounding off the publication is an extensive Foreword (Ger/Eng).The first performance of Ulrich Leisinger’s new edition was given in April 2019 in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg by the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra and the ChorWerk Ruhr under the baton of Kent Nagano. The first Austrian premiere took place in Salzburg on August 2019 in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum, with Andrew Manze conducting the Salzburg Camerata to rousing applause from audience and critics alike. The C-minor Mass reconstruction by Helmut Eder on the basis of the New Mozart Edition (BA 4846) is still available: the score and performance material are on hire, the vocal score is on sale.
