Programm e Note My &rsquo,6 Pieces for horn, violin and piano&rsquo, was written in 1984 as a commission from the Danish Radio for a concert where Ligeti&rsquo,s Horn Trio should receive its Danish premiere played by Danish musicians. My trio is based on my work &rsquo,Studies for Piano&rsquo,. While I wrote these studies I tried to &rsquo, conjure up&rsquo, instrumental parts inside the piano movement. When I received the commission for a horn trio I turned to six of the studies and deepened them by &rsquo, screening them&rsquo, so that their parts and moods appeared in a clearer way. Furthermore I changed the order of the movements so a new unity appeared, beginning with asteadyly hesitating &rsquo,Serenade&rsquo, in slow-motion followed by the &rsquo,Arabesque&rsquo, which hardly gets started before it stops. Then &rsquo,Blues&rsquo,, a melancholy melody and &rsquo,Marcia Funebre&rsquo,, like a fossilized picture with a dramatic threatening outburst ending with a quiet but majestic melody in violin and horn, a melody that disappears in the chords of the piano. Before the last movement &rsquo,For the Children&rsquo, is a large &rsquo,Scherzo misterioso&rsquo,. Hans Abrahamsen

Programme Note
My ’6 Pieces for horn, violin and piano’ was written in 1984 as a commission from the Danish Radio for a concert where Ligeti’s Horn Trio should receive its Danish premiere played by Danish musicians. My trio is based on my work ’Studies for Piano’. While I wrote these studies I tried to ’conjure up’ instrumental parts inside the piano movement. When I received the commission for a horn trio I turned to six of the studies and deepened them by ’screening them’ so that their partsand moods appeared in a clearer way. Furthermore I changed the order of the movements so a new unity appeared, beginning with a steadyly hesitating ’Serenade’ in slow-motion followed by the ’Arabesque’ which hardly gets started before it stops. Then ’Blues’, a melancholy melody and ’Marcia Funebre’, like a fossilized picture with a dramatic threatening outburst ending with a quiet but majestic melody in violin and horn, a melody that disappears in the chords of the piano. Before the last movement ’For the Children’ is a large ’Scherzo misterioso’.

Clarinet, Violin & Piano Duration: 22' Composed: 1988 Published by: Verdehr Trio Tripartita is a title invented for this score, a piece in three movements for three players. The first movement Elaborations is a sonata-like structure whose ideas evolve out of the harmonic succession heard as the background material of the opening passage. The second and third movements are based on essentially the same scalar and harmonic materials as the first; however, they are somewhat different in their moods and expression, in part because they both incorporate elements derived from popular music idioms of the early part of the twentieth century. The form of the second movement, Dances,is related to the nineteenth century scherzo with two trios; here, the scherzo sections are fast and jazzy, while the more relaxed digressions are, respectively, a ragtime-waltz and a tango. The third movement Blues with Variations follows without pause, and furthermore is linked structurally to the previous movements, since the chord sequence for the blues (and subsequent variations) is the same one employed from the very opening of the work. —William Averitt.

Composed as a suite, this descriptive work uses four short movements to create varied and distinctive moods. First is a bold Fanfare with rich harmonies, followed by the March in a traditional style. The third movement is a Blues in a minor key, followed by the final Rondo in triple meter. An appealing and creative addition to the young band repertoire. Dur: c. 7:30.
