POD-James Whitbourn's Agnus Dei From Missa Carolae. Missa Carolae was commission...(+)
POD-James Whitbourn's Agnus Dei From Missa Carolae. Missa Carolae was commissioned by Rochester Cathedral the second oldest cathedral in England to mark the 1400th anniversary ofits foundation. It was first performed there on 24 December 2004 by the Rochester Cathedral Choirs Andy Findon (Fife) the Locke Brass Consort Edmund Aldhouse (Organ) Joby Burgess and Catherine Ring (Percussion) directed byRoger Sayer. The work is intended to invoke a dance-like spirit which is true to the origin of the carol as a simple dance form. The choir parts should be very well-known so that the singers can sing with the whole oftheir bodies and not just their voices. This version is a reduced scoring for SATB (unchanged) with Organ and optional Piccolo and also acts as the vocal score to the full version. In this scoring the Piccolo adds to theeffectiveness of the piece. In either scoring the Piccolo may be replaced with a Flute Fife or even a more rustic Pipe as was used at the first performance. The original scoring for SATB with Piccolo Brass (3 Trumpetsand 3 Trombones) Percussion (2 players) and Organ accompaniment is the preferred version. Full score and parts are available on hire from the publisher or full score on sale (CH71621). The Piccolo part (CH79893-01) is common toboth scorings and is available on sale or hire with the full version. The Organ accompaniment in this score is for performance of the version for SATB Piccolo and Organ only. An A4 spiral-bound version of this score may bepreferable for the organist (CH79893-02). The separate Organ part - available on hire - must be used for the version with instruments. An ad lib. part for the congregation (CH70961 pack of 50) is incorporated into the fullscoring of Missa Carolae. Reference to the entries of the congregation is made in the vocal score for occasions when it is used in conjunction with the full instrumentation.

(WHITBOURN JAMES) Choral SATB SATB, Organ [Sheet music] Chester
Par WHITBOURN JAMES. This glorious collection of beautiful choral music by compo...(+)
Par WHITBOURN JAMES. This glorious collection of beautiful choral music by composer James Whitbourn includes fifteen short works drawn from his oeuvre from the first few years of the 21st century. Many of his greatest compositions are included in The Choral Collection, with many of the pieces working perfectly for seasonal performances, while also reflecting the many fruitful collaborations of Whitbourn's distinguished career. All works are arranged for SATB Choir.
James Whitbourn has become renowned throughout the world for his acclaimed compositions and settings of numerous texts. He has been described as truly original and an innovator of contemporary British choral music, collaborating with people like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. The former appears here, as A Prayer Of Desmond Tutu, a setting of one of the Archbishop's prayers. His arrangements and compositions for the King's College Choir have been universally critically acclaimed, with A Great And Mighty Wonder, Nunc Dimittis and Were You There? representing these hugely popular collaborations.
Whitbourn has also had a very close relationship with the BBC since his beginnings as a composer, working with them on three pieces within The Choral Collection. Eternal Rest and Give Us The Wings Of Faith were both composed specifically for television broadcast, the former (in its orchestral form) was played for the funeral of the Queen Mother in 2002. His longest work, for which he is most famous, is a setting of text from'the Diary of Anne Frank'. There Is No Speech Or Language comes from this work, taking its text from other sources, but that still maintain the beauty and tragedy of the wider piece.
The Choral Collection of fifteen compositions by James Whitbourn is full of beautiful, haunting, uplifting and inspiring melodies for SATB Choir and Organ Accompaniment from one of the most treasured British choral composers. The brilliant choice of texts throughout is matched only by the sheer compositional skill of Whitbourn in evoking the emotions of the words in the musical form. Also included are suggestions for seasonal song use, a list of recordings, and fascinating song notes written by Whitbourn himself. The joy of choral singing is nowhere more evident than in a work by James Whitbourn, and performances of any piece within this collection is sure to be remembered for a long time to come./ Recueil / Choeur Mixte (SATB) et Orgue

For SATB chorus and Organ commissioned for the Choir Schools’ Association conference 2008 originally for upper voices.'With Latin words from Psalm 66 (the translation is at the top of the score!) the lively andrhythmic setting of Jubilate Deo by James Whitbourn for SATB would thrill any choir especially a school choir and indeed this is an adaptation of the setting the composer made in 2008 for upper voices written for the ChoirSchools’ Association. Rhythmic yet with straightforward harmonies and a lively organ accompaniment there is enough challenge to keep the interest of singers and a nimble fingered organist under a competent conductor. Thisexciting piece will thrill the singers and audience!' - Sunday by Sunday (RSCM)

James Whitbourn's Set Me As A Seal Upon Thine Heart for SATB and Organ. Composed for the wedding of James Roman and Grace SvatekTrinity Church Princeton New Jersey November 4 2017 Duration: 4.5minutes James Whitbourn's setting of the text popular at weddings Set me as a seal upon thine heart is a worthy competitor for Walton's well-known version. For SATE choir and not too demanding -though needing vocal clarity and accurate pitching - it is in an ABA form the gentle opening and concluding sections separated by the build-up to the climax on a C-sharp major chord at the end of the phrase 'many waterscannot quench love' followed by a brief organ interlude before subsiding to a piano ending. The whole is lightly and supportively accompanied on the organ. It is well worth considering by choirs needing new ideas for theirwedding playlist. - Organists' Review

Requiem canticorum is a five-movement work of 12 - 14 minutes’ duration. Its title means 'a Requiem of song' or 'a Requiem of canticles' indicating that it is a commemorative piece which sets texts associated with theRequiem mass rather than being a full Requiem. It is scored for choir soprano saxophone and organ a scoring it shares with the 'Son of God Mass' by the same composer. It can be performed as a concert piece or as afree-standing anthem within the context of a commemorative event or liturgy.‘Requiem canticorum’ can also be performed in conjunction with selected movements from the ‘Son of God Mass’ to make a full concert Requiem. Thekey-structure of the two works allows for a seamless intertwining and in concert should be performed in the sequence indicated below. When performed in this way the sequence can be given the title 'Requiem' or 'Requiem Son of GodMass' in a concert programme.Introit (Requiem canticorum)Pie Jesu (Requiem canticorum)Kyrie (Son of God Mass)Alleluia (Requiem canticorum)De profundis (Requiem canticorum)Sanctus and Benedictus (Son ofGod Mass)Pax Domini (Son of God Mass)Agnus Dei (Son of God Mass)Lux Aeterna (Requiem canticorum)Amen (Son of God Mass)Additionally some of the work can be used within a Requiem liturgy the followingmovements having a liturgical place:Introit (Requiem canticorum) until bar 68Kyrie (Son of God Mass)Alleluia (Requiem canticorum)or De profundis (Requiem canticorum)Sanctus and Benedictus (Son of GodMass)Agnus Dei (Son of God Mass)Lux Aeterna (Requiem canticorum) and Amen (Son of God Mass).'There is real depth and sincerity to Whitbourn's writing lending an atmosphere of solemnity and reassuring calm. The thickhomophonic scoring and complementary modal flourishes from the Sax imbue the piece with an eastern ambience only occasionally brought back to western shores by the limited use of Organ. James Whitbourn's Beatus Vir for SSATB choir with a Piano accompaniment for rehersal. Commissioned for the Choir of St Matthew’s Church Northampton. First performed on StMatthew’s Day 21 September 2017 conducted by Justin Miller. 'With the wedding season soon to be upon church musicians James Whitbourn’s new five-minute wedding anthem Set me as a seal upon thineheart deserves a warm welcome. It would be easy to learn quickly if rehearsal time is limited with vocal lines that are not demanding and helpfully supported by the organ. But the music itself has a haunting intense beauty thatis very special. Judge for yourself with the performance on YouTube that appears to have been made at the wedding for which it was written. St Matthew Northampton for which Walter Hussey commissioned so notably continues an enterprising music commissioning policy most recently with Whitbourn’s setting of Beatus Vir. The commission was for the feast day of St Matthew last September and the published score describes the text asbeing the Gradual for St Matthew. But that rather limits what is simply the first two verses of Psalm 112 and deserves to be sung throughout much of the church year. Forget Monteverdi and other lively settings of Beatus vir:here we have a contemplation on how blest is the person who trusts in the Lord. Despite a dramatic outburst on ‘potens in terra’ (‘mighty in the land’) the work ends as it began with an extended gentlesetting of the word ‘Beatus’.' - Sunday by Sunday

Performances there begin with a ceremonial procession that follows the movement of a boy chorister accompanied by pipe and drum from the High Altar to a large crib placed in the Nave gathering the choirs (singing from different parts of the cathedral) and principal clergy in the course of the procession. The work though not literally for dancing is intended to invoke a dance-like spirit which is true to theorigin of the carol as a simple dance form.
