Of all his early chamber works, the 'Nocturne' is most clearly by the mature Vaughan Williams, almost anticipating the influence of Ravel which followed his lessons from the French composer in 1908. In the veiled beauty of its highly chromatic harmonies we hear already the tone-poet of the slow movement of 'A London Symphony', while in the fleet-footed 'Scherzo' there is already a French influence in the way the folk-song is subtly woven into the texture, only brief snatches of the tune being heard until the penultimate page when it receives fuller treatment. The work plays for about 10 minutes. The 1904 'Scherzo' is a vigorous march with fugal episodes which lasts some 6 minutes and may effectively be performed by itself./ Répertoire / Trio ou Quatuor à Cordes

Par VAUGHAN WILLIAMS RALPH. Quintet in D is in four movements: Allegro moderato - Allegretto Intermezzo - Andantino , and - Allegro molto finale . If it only fitfully contains elements of the mature Vaughan Williams, it is a delightful work in its own right, with playful touches and more than a ration of charm. The writing for piano is very accomplished and shatters the myth, much propagated by the composer himself, that he lacked technique. It is like anglicised Brahms with a sense of humour, notably in the Intermezzo, and there is even an allusion to the slow movement of Brahms' Fourth Symphony in the Andantino. Vaughan Williams était alors en est quatre-vingt-seconde année - un intérêt sur les sonorités instrumentales inhabituels était une caractéristique de sa musique dans la dernière partie de sa vie. Il avait utilisé des saxophones dans la machine de ' Emploi ', vibraphone et le vent du masque dans la 'Sinfonia Antartica' (Symphonie #7) et même terminé un concerto pour harmonica, piano et cordes pour Larry Adler. L'ouvrage est dédié à la LSO et son principal puis tubiste, Philip Catelinet, dont le compositeur consulté constamment tout au long de l'écriture de le oeuvre.
