Napier's concerts were more than a vehicle for airing newly published works or composers, and when it was proposed to revive the series in 1792, the Morning Chronicle of 28 January recalled that they had served to improve the taste and science of the amateur as well as introducing professional merit to the highest patronage. Shield's duets, expressly written with talented amateurs in mind (according to the title-page of Op.2), exactly suited the repertoire of the morning concerts.Both sets of duets are neatly engineered with a violinist's grasp of technique and articultion, and with each part sharing in the musical interest. The prevailing spirit of Op. 1 is Italianate and there are many attractive details to be heard. The amoroso movement of No.1, for example, with its ardent episodes and the hunting rondo of No.2 which begins with the representation of distant horn calls and later depicts a chromatically wounded prey. If the opening of No. 3 gives the impression of an exotic dance, including the audible thrum of a guitar or harp, then the rondo of No.4 can be imagined as a spring song animated with birds and breezes. The opening of No.5 is as propulsive as a theatre overture whilst No.6, written for either violins or flutes, assumes a suitably fluty tone. Op.2 is an altogether more compact set which sharpens the focus on elements already noticed in Op.1. Shield employs a variety of forms including minuet, variations, rondo and canon; and he also adopts vocal styles including lyric song (for the affettuoso movement of No.1) and arioso (for the opening adagio of No.2). Petersen (A0.973263). Glory of the West was commissioned by Dr. Zach Buie and premiered at the College of Southern Idaho on March 3, 2020. Dr. Buie requested a new work connected with or inspired by the Mountain West region. The inspiration for this piece was the song MONTANA, which I first heard at a memorial service, a great favorite of the gentleman who had passed. The song was composed in 1910 and later adopted as Montana's state song. Glory of the West is in three sections. The first, marked Rolling Along, conveys optimism and wide-open spaces. The middle Adagio section features a descending stepwise melody followed by a soaring ascending line, reminiscent of melodic contours in the refrain of the song. The final section, marked Playfully, begins with fragments of a lively and rhythmically irregular motive, and woven throughout are echoes of the ascending lines from the previous section. The score contains the Piano and C Trumpet parts in concert pitch, and a part for B-flat Trumpet is provided as an alternate.

I. Allegro - Spring has returned. Song of the Birds. All is gay, and the birds sing happily.
FLOWING FOUNTAINS: Fountains play in the breeze, constantly moving.
THUNDER: The skies are dark; lightning flashes and thunder roars.
SONG OF THE BIRDS: After the storm, the birds return with their song.
II. Largo - THE SLEEPING GOATHERD: On the flowered meadow, the goatherd and his dog roam among the blossoming trees. The Barking Dogs
III. Allegro - PASTORAL DANCE: Nymphs and shepherds dance to the bagpipes under the beautiful skies of spring.

LANGUISHING IN THE HEAT
Man and beast wilt in the burning sun; even the evergreens feel the heat.
THE CUCKOO
The Cuckoo sings loudly.
THE DOVE
And the songs of the turtledove and goldfinch are ardent.
THE GOLDFINCH
The gentle breezes sigh.
CHANGING WINDS.
but the north wind suddenly appears and starts to quarrel.
THE NORTH WIND
A frightened shepherd weeps in fear and bemoans his fate.
II. Adagio
The fierce lightning and terrible thunder makes the shepherd unable to rest his weary body.
BLUE-BOTTLE FLIES
III. Presto
TEMPESTUOUS SUMMERTIME
The shepherd is right to be afraid. The sky flashes and the thunder is awesome.
Grain and fruit are destroyed by the storm.
AUTUMN

I. Allegro. The peasants dance and sing, hailing the fruits of the harvest.
The drunkard drinks deeply from the cup of Bacchus.
The Drunks. A Drunk.
The drunkards fall into a deep slumber.
II. Adagio molto. The drunkards sleep soundly; the season is mild; peace and rest overtake all the joyous peasants.
III. Allegro. The Hunt.
As dawn breaks the hunter appears with his horn, hound, and gun.
The prey appears; the chase is on.
The prey is bewildered by the clamorous dogs and the noise of the guns.
Fatigued and wounded, the prey falls and dies.
WINTER
Vivaldi: Winter from The Four Seasons, Op. 8 (RV297) Score: 23 Pages, Duration: ca. 8:30, 3 movements.
I. Allegro non molto. We shiver in the snow and are pierced by the cruel winds.
We run and stamp our feet at every step.
Our teeth chatter with the cold.
II. Largo. We pass the day contented by the fireside; outside it is raining very hard.
III. Allegro. We carefully walk on the ice. We are afraid we may fall.
We Slip and fall. We get up and bravely try again.
The ice is breaking, the cracks are wide.
The shrieking winds are at war.
Such is winter, but it has its joys.
