The Overture A Midsummer Night's Dream is originally composed by the German composer Felix Mendelssohn, who was inspired by reading William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream. It was initially created as a piano piece for duet, intended for enjoyment with his sister Fanny. Notably, Mendelssohn himself later arranged it for orchestra in 1826 when he was just 17 years old.Fast forward 16 years, this piece took an unconventional path to composition. It was commissioned by King Wilhelm IV of Prussia at the time, and the overture became part of a larger work known as Incidental Music, where it was accompanied by other pieces, apart from the overture.The Overture A Midsummer Night's Dream begins with four chords that evoke a gentle breeze, as if beckoning you into the world of fairies, in line with the folklore that claims that on the eve of Midsummer (Walpurgis Night), fairies and witches gather for revelry. It then transitions into the theme of the fairy's fluttering wings, followed by the music of the Fairy King's palace, the lovers' theme, and passages for clowns and hunting scenes. Finally, it returns to the fairies, dancing and disappearing as if carried away by the wind.We have arranged this enchanting piece for a brass ensemble, featuring ten players (3 trumpets, 3 horns, 3 trombones, and 1 tuba). The 1st Trumpet part includes an optional switch to Piccolo Trumpet, but this is purely optional and not mandatory to perform the arrangement.Additionally, please note that the 3rd Trombone part is intended for the Bass Trombone but can also be performed using Euphonium or Tenor Bass Trombone.

This book contains 66 songs for the instrumentalistThe Complete Instrumentalist Two is the second book in a series for instrumental players, designed to help develop excellent musicianship.It is written in stick notation* with an additional five line stave so that pupils or teachers can write out the music in whichever clef or key they choose to use. The songs are grouped by the number of notes in the piece and are mostly diatonic with a few pentatonic and modal pieces.As with all of the DaCapo books it is left to the teachers to decide which section of the book to start with. Tempos and dynamic markings are also left to the teachers and pupils. We have suggested activities that can be applied to the entire repertoire and there are some extra ideas for specific pieces included on some pages, along with extra information for the pupil.In many instances the songs have been reworded as it was felt that the subject matter or use of language was a barrier for some pupils. This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. Faced with trying to recreate the uniqueness of Ravel’s use of the solo Alto Saxophone, I decided to give that part to a solo Oboe d’Amore. It’s quite distinct, and conveniently just exactly fits into the range of the instrument. Many groups won’t have access to a d’amore, though, so I have included an alternate part for English Horn. Using it does make this the only movement that requires 2 English Horns, however. This is also the movement where I discovered that the cheap recording equipment I’m using currently doesn’t like long sustained tones, and there are a lot of them in this movement. For whatever reason, there’s a lot of distortion on them in the MP3, and I apologize for not being able to figure out how to correct that.

Betty Lee is an example of a theme and variation or fantasia style of writing that was popular at the end of the 19th century and the fists quarter of the 20th century. In most instances the piece would involve a folk or national tune that becomes more complicated as it progresses. Whislt many British composers such as Round and Hartmann were renowned for writing these style of pieces, American virtuoso players were equally adept, including Herbert Clarke, Frank Simon and others. Herman Bellstedt was amongst these virtuoso player/cpmposer combinations. He was born in Bremen in Germany, but moved to Cincinnati, Ohio when he was 9. He quickly gained a reputation as a fine cornet player, playing as a soloist with most bands in his area and beyond, earning him the title 'Boy Wonder'. Soon he was performing with the top bands in the US, including the Patrick Gilmore and John Philip Sousa Band, in the latter sharing solos with cornet sensations Herbert L. Clarke and Walter B. Rodgers. During this period he also started as Professor of Wind Instruments at Cincinnati Conservatory, where he continued to work on his composition projects. The most famous of these composition are Napoli, Fantasie No.1, Capriccio Brilliante and a version of Carnival of Venice; Betty Lee is a lesser known piece to these but equally provides a technical challenge.It is a must for all intermediate to advanced performers.

The concerto for two harpsichords in C minor, BWV 1060, is a concerto for two harpsichords and string orchestra by Johann Sebastian Bach. It is likely to have originated in the second half of the 1730s as an arrangement of an earlier concerto, also in C minor, for oboe and violin. That conjectural original version of the concerto, which may have been composed in Bach's Köthen years (1717–1723), is lost, but has been reconstructed in several versions known as BWV 1060R. While the extant 18th-century manuscripts present the concerto in a form for two harpsichords and strings, the assumption that it originated as concerto for violin and oboe has become widely accepted since the late 19th century. The Adagio middle movement, where the melody lines of both solo instruments imitate one another without distinction in texture and figuration, has been likened to the middle movement of Bach's double violin concerto, BWV 1043. No 5 - I Saw My Lady WeepingTaken from Thomas Morley's First Book Of Ayres. This is the first verse of a well known Elizabethan poem (anon) which was also set by John Dowland with the slightly different title of I Saw My Lady Weep. Dowland set all three verses whereas Morley only the first, I have given the other two in the notes within the score for information. The song is through composed with the last two lines repeated, not uncommon at that time, and has quite an elaborate texture making it more challenging to play. Morley’s description of the publication was: Little short songs to sing and play to the lute with the base viole. I have substituted guitar for lute and cello for bass viole, chords have been re-voiced in places to better suit the guitar but no alteration has been made to the harmony. .
