Published by NoteForge (A0.1002829). Earmarks is a musical (and hopefully humorous) view of some of the issues in today's political climate, designed to make you make you laugh--or to make you think. And definitely to make you talk. It starts out with Echo Chamber, where everything you hear is everything you want to hear. As we move more and more of our lives online, we're at the mercy of algorithms that try to deliver more of what we like--and give us options for removing that which we don't. The more time we spend in these echo chambers, the less we hear from dissenters. (The piano tries to come in with a new idea later in the movement, but is largely ignored).The second movement, Filibuster, does what I initially intended. Although all three instruments do get to play, it's a lot of repeated, pleasant-sounding milquetoast stuff without a great deal of substance that never really resolves. And it has a repeat sign at the end that allows it to be played as many times as the performers wish. How long this movement is depends entirely on the whim of the pianist. A swing state is a state with a similar level of support for both parties that can go either way during an election. Likewise, Swing States is a piece for saxophone and piano, and a piece for clarinet and piano, and it's a struggle to see who's going to win. Will they sort out their differences? Will we?

The world premiere took place at the Montalvo Chamber Music Series in California, March 5th, 2004. In a letter to the members of the trio dated 9/20/03, Mr. O’Connor lays out his plan for the new music.My initial ideas have sort of exploded in to the entire concept of the music with a real impact actually. Now I am piecing together the parts of it and then will eventually work on detail as I get the overall form under wrap. Here is what my inspiration for the music is; Johnny Cash.Johnny was a boyhood hero of mine, I used to sing his songs when I was 8, 9 and 10 years old, and played the guitar like him (sometimes up the fretboard strumming away). My mom used to help me transcribe all the lyrics off the albums, she also thought he hung the moon. As you can imagine, the passing of Cash for me this last week has been emotional. I am at my very best when I compose with my emotions at my sleeve, and guess what, it is time to do the Eroica piece. And I believe I will be able to craft a very unique tribute in to the form of a Piano Trio. There is something that is very fitting in all of this though. Cash was one of the few country music and rockabilly musicians to appeal to all ages, all types of people all the way into the MTV generation which is something that is hard to fathom. That one person can move musical mountains with his charisma and his voice. He sung about the prisons, riding the trains, about killing, and living, about lost love, about the gospel, about the downtrodden and the Native American, and about being stoned. His musical sound was the thing that got everybody though. He developed along with his guitar player Luther Perkins, a new and vibrant way to bring the music out.I also knew Johnny and worked with him, visited him privately at his home. Johnny also appeared on my album called Heroes, where he brought back the great story of the Devil coming down to Georgia to challenge young Johnny for the golden fiddle. My job now is to bridge what I am feeling about my inspiration for Cash, and bring it in to the instruments that I love writing for.I might not have imagined that this Johnny Cash concept would have worked out of hand, if it hadn’t been for your musicianship, insight fullness and graceful approaches in to the details of musical concepts and style. If the piece is good, then I will have no doubt that you will bring it to the forefront so others can grasp the intentions of the work, and in addition for others to enjoy playing it after you have brought it all out in to the open, and gave it a life. The Tennessee TwoIII. My JuneIV. Hello, I’m Johnny CashPiano Trio No. 1 (Poets and Prophets) was composed by Mark O’Connor during the Fall of 2003. The piece was commissioned for the Eroica Trio by a noted patron for music, Kathryn Gould of Palo Alto, California. The world premiere took place at the Montalvo Chamber Music Series in California, March 5th, 2004. In a letter to the members of the trio dated 9/20/03, Mr. O’Connor lays out his plan for the new music.My initial ideas have sort of exploded in to the entire concept of the music with a real impact actually. Now I am piecing together the parts of it and then will eventually work on detail as I get the overall form under wrap. Here is what my inspiration for the music is; Johnny Cash.Johnny was a boyhood hero of mine, I used to sing his songs when I was 8, 9 and 10 years old, and played the guitar like him (sometimes up the fretboard strumming away). My mom used to help me transcribe all the lyrics off the albums, she also thought he hung the moon. As you can imagine, the passing of Cash for me this last week has been emotional. I am at my very best when I compose with my emotions at my sleeve, and guess what, it is time to do the Eroica piece. And I believe I will be able to craft a very unique tribute in to the form of a Piano Trio. There is something that is very fitting in all of this though. Cash was one of the few country music and rockabilly musicians to appeal to all ages, all types of people all the way into the MTV generation which is something that is hard to fathom. That one person can move musical mountains with his charisma and his voice. He sung about the prisons, riding the trains, about killing, and living, about lost love, about the gospel, about the downtrodden and the Native American, and about being stoned. His musical sound was the thing that got everybody though. He developed along with his guitar player Luther Perkins, a new and vibrant way to bring the music out.I also knew Johnny and worked with him, visited him privately at his home. Johnny also appeared on my album called Heroes, where he brought back the great story of the Devil coming down to Georgia to challenge young Johnny for the golden fiddle. My job now is to bridge what I am feeling about my inspiration for Cash, and bring it in to the instruments that I love writing for.I might not have imagined that this Johnny Cash concept would have worked out of hand, if it hadn’t been for your musicianship, insight fullness and graceful approaches in to the details of musical concepts and style. If the piece is good, then I will have no doubt that you will bring it to the forefront so others can grasp the intentions of the work, and in addition for others to enjoy playing it after you have brought it all out in to the open, and gave it a life. Composing Tiny Shattered Pieces was a truly immersive musical journey due to the sheer amount of time it took to write it and how much time I spent thinking about this piece. Since the work was commissioned before the start of the 2020 pandemic, but rescheduled for a premiere 2 years later – I could write, re-write and re-think this piece from start to finish multiple times. In the end there was enough material for a 30-minute composition, but so much of it was so different due to the different moods one would go through during a pandemic, that compiling it into 5 separate short musical statements was the most natural conclusion.   The music embarks on a journey of discovery, love, destruction, reconciliation, suffering, and by the end of it – war. Naturally at the end of a 2-year period a person evolves and goes through a myriad of different experiences, but few artists or composers experienced the world going through a tectonic shift from the early 2000s until now, therefore I felt it necessary to touch upon many different topics through the language of this work, including the personal and the universal. Each of the movements is a complete statement but together the movements form a larger pyramid-like structure, completing each other’s thoughts, propelling them and eventually bringing them to conclusion.    It should be noted that by the time I was reaching the end of the compositional process – a major war started with Russia invading Ukraine. Being a Ukrainian-born composer, the issue affected me deeply and sipped into the music by the end of the 4th movement. This is where the pyramid reaches its peak and should be appropriately shaped by the musicians.   The piece is approximately 10 minutes in duration and is to be performed with utmost freedom, gusto and conviction. The performers must not shy away from making the sounds crunch together, piercing through the hall, but at the same time the more quiet, gentle parts should be appropriately shaped and bring much needed comfort. The work is about contrasts, outbursts of emotions, quiet sobbing, rage and solitude.  The piece is approximately 12 minutes long. It was commissioned by Dame Evelyn Glennie in cooperation with Calgary's Land's End Ensemble.

Single-movement work for string trio. I've been practicing meditation for several years and if I had to choose a particular word to describe what I experience, that word would be drifting. After relaxing, my mind begins to wander. Fragments of images, thoughts and sounds flash through my mind, like fast zapping on a TV. Everything is blurry, but every now and then an image takes shape and for a moment I see all kinds of things: people, landscapes, animals, etc.; sometimes I hear a voice that speaks to me; I've even listened to music, like tuning in to a radio station for a few seconds (and when I say listen I mean it; it's not like remembering a song, it's exactly like listening to it). This is known in neuroscience as the hypnagogic state, in which hallucinations often occur. I decided to draw on this kind of experience to write Drifting. It's organized in three sections, with no break between them: relaxing, flowing and being.

This is an original composition, in three movements, for flute, violin, and classical guitar, composed in 2006. This piece comes with full score, plus separate parts for flute, violin, and guitar. In 2005 I was asked to play in a chamber music performance, with a flautist and violinist, and was surprised to see how little published music there was for this combination....lots for flute , viola, and guitar, but not much with a violin in the mix. The few works I did find were written when composers felt that the guitar should sit in the background and play endless arpeggios, completely devoid of any melodic interest. This Serenade of mine aims to correct that problem. Timing: movement I ~ 3:30, II ~ 5:15, III ~ 3:15 This works very well as part of a classical guitar recital, when it's desirable to add a chamber work. This 'Alternate Version' has rewritten the piece into more familiar time signatures (6/8; 9/8; 12/8). Duet in D-Flat Major was written in what could perhaps be best described as a burst of inspiration. After a couple of days of casually juggling some motifs around in my mind, clicked and I woke up with a musical idea that I scrambled to write down as quickly as possible. I spent the majority of that day developing these ideas, and this became what is now the third movement. Some of the ‘leftover ideas’ that didn’t make it into the finale were used as seeds for the second movement - in particular, the motifs at measure 9 and from 70-80. The opening movement ended up being the last one written and begins with a noble and/or heroic fanfare in 6/16. The second movement cautiously meanders through unexpected harmonies, much like someone nervously exploring unfamiliar places. The finale is another fanfare, but has some mischievous fun after turning a few harmonic corners in minor. My goal with this duet was to create a musical universe that has the grandeur of an orchestra with just two voices.  I’ve adapted this duet for a variety of instruments. Throughout his career, Stock has beena tireless and generous advocate on behalf of new music and living composers. This work isdedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significantcontributor to America’s contemporary musical life.The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the seaâ€) –appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When thecomposition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece.As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to changethe work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive.The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparentwith age.†The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from theplainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento.At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out†in subtle ways.The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a“beginning†– as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, afast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.†After driving through a series oftransformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the“beginning†again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (theunderlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement.In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a morestraightforward fashion. After the opening declamatory statements, the following sectionsmove between more free developmental techniques, based on the first movement’stransformations, and “motet†sections – using cantus firmus methods and textures fromRenaissance music. The tone and palate is, however, much darker and more obsessive.There is a brooding ponderousness to these contrapuntal developments. So transcribing the celeste part to fit into an ensemble like this was a big challenge due to its enormous range, but the movement is so famous that leaving it out was out of the question. In the end, I decided to replace the usual 3rd oboe part with 4 solo oboes to cover the 4-part harmony of the celeste. The key was lowered a step from the original to help the top solo voice be in a bit more comfortable range, and for once lowering things didn't make any of the other parts too awkward or out-of-range.

The flute trio in this movement posed a similar challenge to the celeste in the Sugar Plum Fairy Dance, and I have dealt with it the same way - by replacing the usual 3rd oboe part with 3 solo oboes that play the 3 flute parts. Fortunately, the flute parts are playable on oboe as-is. Much as I would have liked to have lower the key to avoid the high G's in the top part, doing so makes the bottom part awkwardly low, and also takes the English Horn solo too low for its range. Otherwise, this is a pretty standard transcription, with the 1st/solo parts being considerably more difficult than the 2nd and 3rd parts.

Duration: 10 minutes, 16 pp. Description: In speaking of his recitation of his Four Quartets on phonograph, T. S. Eliot says: A recording of a poem by its author is no more definitive an 'interpretation' than a recording of a symphony conducted by the composer. The poem, if it is of any depth and complexity, will have meanings in it concealed from the author; and should be capable of being read in many ways, and with a variety of emotional emphasis.... Another reader, reciting the poem, need not feel bound to reproduce these rhythms: but, if he has studied the author's version, he can assure himself that he is departing from it deliberately, and not from ignorance. The composer could not have stated his intentions towards this piece better than to quote T. S. Eliot. No note or inflection is fixed in stone that it cannot be negotiated, changed to better suit the needs of the performer. This is especially true of the first movement which is composed around sections of the first of Eliot's Four Quartets (Burnt Norton), but applies generally to the whole piece. Much of the notation in this piece is meant to be suggestive. The performer may take a highly faithful approach to realizing the score, or consider the movements as models for directed improvisation. Movement 2, for example, asks the performer to continue to improvise in like manner, yet maps out a clear design for the music. Birthday Suit is dedicated to Robert S. Howe, a friend and obstetrician who welcomes into this world many people in their birthday suits. That is the most obvious reason for the title of this piece. A reason more germane to the music itself is the piece's reliance on the performer's own natural body rhythms (such as speech rhythms, involuntary eye movements, and rate of breathing) to help organize the flow of the music. In this way both metabolism and the written note cooperate to make music. There are three movements, Rhythm of Speech - Rhythm of Sight - Rhythm of Breath. Total 10 minutes. Published by Daniel Carr (A0.918710). The Sonata for Flute and Piano is the longest and most complex work I have composed for Flute and Piano. My goal for this piece was to push myself as a composer, and to push both flautist and pianist to their absolute limits – both musically and technically. The flute is capable of much more than just being pretty – and in this work it depicts violence, drama, joy, sorrow and heroism. Extended techniques are used throughout the sonata (aire, percussive tonguing, pitch bends, harmonics and flutter tonguing) but always within a tonal framework. The first movement starts out peacefully, as if beginning a legend, with a folk-like and serene melody. The second and third themes are more percussive and rhythmical – the flute and piano engaging in a violent, interlaced dance in a section marked Allegro Swordfight. In the recapitulation, the first theme reappears in much more dramatic form. The second movement begins with a forceful march before a darker and more cabalistic middle section emerges. The movement builds to a formidable climax in the final measures. The third movement begins simply and quietly, offering a respite from the energy of the first two movements, and quoting themes from both of them. It then leads attacca (without pause) into the final movement, which surges forward relentlessly before a lyrical section provides the flute an opportunity to soar above wave-like arpeggios in the piano. The piece ends on an ethereal note, with flute and piano hovering near silence in their upper ranges.

For each of the three movements, I began by composing anoriginal folk tune within that national style. Each movement of the work is then anarrangement in my own musical style of my original folk tune. The formal and harmoniclanguage is simple, direct, and uncluttered throughout, as is appropriate for folk music.The first movement, Highland Ballad (Scotland), begins and ends with lyrical music. Themiddle sections contain settings of the basic melody -- first presented over a bagpipe-likedrone (with interjections) and then in a full harmonization.The second movement, Ceremonial (Nigeria), combines a harmonic refrain along with asimple melody in the Nigerian/Yoruban folk style. As the movement progresses, theeuphonium plays the role of a song-leader, adding increasingly impassioned countermelodiesand textures over the basic refrains.The third movement, Circle Dance (America), is jubilant -- in the vein of the folk songs ofthe Shakers. A basic rondo structure alternates the principal melody with contrastingexcursions.

(A0.1415494). I structured the beginning in a very expansive, linear way, with this rain reproduced by the rain stick. The piano creates a rotating bassline. Over this foundation, the marimba and violin come and go repetitively. There isn't really an ending; we move towards silence, in fact, it's very Zen. I wrote this piece so that the marimbist passes the rain stick to the violinist at a certain moment, a baton exchange like in a relay race. Scoring this movement for double reed ensemble was mostly a challenge in how high the general orchestration is. With all of the low registers of instruments omitted in the original, it left for some bassoon parts that were constantly in the high range, with the third bassoon and contra found in all of the other movements being omitted. The oboe parts also go quite high as a result, and although I considered it, I decided against lowering the key from the original in order to preserve the miniature aspect of the piece that Tchaikovsky intended from the high ranges. Otherwise, I quite like how this transcription turned out, though it is definitely a technical challenge to get up to speed. All oboe and bassoon parts are divisi.

This composition has eight short movements and is scored for wind quintet. I. Nebulous – The wandering tonality, slow tempo, frequent shifts of color, and lack of cadences gives this movement a feeling of vagueness. II. Puckish – This Allegretto movement has a playful quality that is created by staccato articulations, melodic leaps, unexpected use of rests and sudden tonality shifts to express an impish quality. III. Excited – A fast tempo and technical passages along with driving rhythms help this movement express excitement. IV. Horrified – Angular melodic lines, trills, dissonant chords, extreme ranges, and accents are all used to create this emotional representation. V. Jocular – This playful movement in an Allegretto tempo uses staccato, syncopation, meter change, dotted rhythms, and angular melodies for its laughing sounds. VI. Scattered – A Presto tempo with hemiola, staccato notes, and light scoring are used throughout this short movement that feels like it is constantly changing direction. VII. Regretful – This Lento movement has sad legato lines with unresolved dissonances at the beginning and end. The middle section creates a sense of hope but quickly returns to the sorrowful sound. VIII. Confident – This movement is in a march style with strong accents. Its clear lines and rhythms help portray strength in one’s beliefs.
