Published by Rudy Volkmann (A0.1005641). The William Wallace Gilchrist Piano Trio in G Minor is a monumental, and historically significant work. In 1990, while chairman of the music department of Paine College, I spent a week doing research on a project in the Philadelphia Free Library. In the course of that project, I stumbled upon an unpublished major chamber piece by one of America’s first homegrown Romantic composers, William Wallace Gilchrist (1846-1916). The find was a vellum (ink on onion skin) working score and parts - working score in that there were changes made on the pages (assumed to be in the composer’s own handwriting) of Gilchrist’s first piano trio. I had other projects at hand, so it was 2005 before I finished editing and annotating the score and parts, presented here. I encourage the reader to refer to the editorial notes in preparing this piece for performance.

An arrangement for soprano voice and classical guitar of I Know That My Redeemer Liveth from Handel's The Messiah, arranged for voice and classical guitar. The original key for this was in E major, and while that is a very good key for the guitar, this arrangement seemed richer in the key of D, with the guitar tuning the 6th string down to D. Should anyone want to perform this in E, the guitarist would need to used a capo at the second fret, and the vocal line would be sung a whole step higher. While this work was written for soprano singer, this arrangement could also be performed instrumentally with either flute, violin, or oboe playing the vocal part. Mini Suite for Picc I had many ideas for a piccolo piece, but did not know how to tie them together. Then, while playing in a summer band, I heard several flute players say they don't like playing piccolo unless it is just for short passages. That gave me the idea of a suite with small movements where I could implement my musical ideas. Each movement in this mini suite is a little sample of what the piccolo can do: arpeggio passages, imitation of birds, sweet melodies, chromatic runs, and of course, super high notes while changing meter.

Published by Jeremiah Lawson (A0.985327). This is the full score and parts for a chamber sonata in two movements for tuba and guitar. The guitar does not require amplification although you may use an amplified guitar if you like. The work is about 10 minutes long, beginning with a variation movement and closing with a lively sonata form. The sonata was premiered by myself and Jameson Bratcher July 26, 2013 at the Seattle Classic Guitar Society open mic.While I hadn't heard Tampa Red's work with guitar and tuba from the 1920s while I was working on this sonata from about 2009 to 2012 I have drawn inspiration from 1920s era blues in a number of my works. The opening variation form is not exactly blues but draws inspiration from blues. The closing sonata form has a thinly disguised blues theme as the first theme in the exposition, while the second theme is a retrograde inversion of the theme from the opening variation form. The sonata is dedicated to Jameson Bratcher. The complete sonata was filmed in 2013 by Scott Stephan. .

Published by Tuaimanu Byron Petaia (A0.493772). As a disclaimer: This piece is best suited to pianists with larger hands. It is common to find the left hand playing a tenth with the perfect fifth above the bass in between (i.e. C-G-E). In general, the fast movements are very technically demanding, and while lyricism dominates the first two movements, the large chords definitely add a couple layers of difficulty! I still hope you enjoy them!I wrote my set of variations as a way to explore a variety of ways by which I could accompany the folk tune, Shenandoah. With the first two variations, I chose to stick to the decidedly lyrical disposition of the original tune, while the last three variations are recast in a more boisterous and upbeat light. In all variations, I did my best to write in a way that evoked the feeling of Americana (I tried not to limit myself to stereotypical depictions of Shenandoah, and yet I wanted to ensure I maintained a respect for the source material). Thus, one variation, I attempted to transplant the melody into the vast openness of the unexplored West (variation three). In another, I tried to utilize harmonies that were reminiscent of Jazz (variation two). Firefly Elegy uses a 12-note melodic theme, which through the course of the piece undergoes a series of transformations - mirroring the metamorphosis that takes place over a firefly's brief life span. The piece comprises four sections that reflect the four life stages of the firefly. During the motionless egg stage, some types of fireflies glow dimly; the opening section of the piece (following a short fanfare of flashing-light) is likewise static and calm, while at the same time features an internal motion hinting at subdued energy. The following groovy section is at times aggressive, not unlike the firefly during its larva stage, when it is hunting and digesting insects using special enzymes. The firefly hibernates through the pupa stage - reflected in the third section of the piece by seemingly everlasting sustained chords in the strings. Like a flash of light, each new phrase begins with an ascending scale, while the harp provides groups of repeated notes, recalling the synchronized flashes that are found in groups of tropical fireflies. Firefly Elegy ends with an elegy in which the now mature firefly looks back at its life. It has gone through such an extensive journey but only long enough to mate and lay eggs, sometimes without feeding during its adult stage. In the summertime, I often watch the firefly in his lonely flutter, flashing about and looking for a mate so he can complete the sole purpose of his short life before dying away. He must sometimes look back and wonder: was it all worth it?

I pushed the boundaries of my own style and ability in order to compose something unique for piano in this piece. I had in mind a brilliant pianist Soyeon Lee from Korea who inspired the composition with her virtuoso technique, and her unique personality. The musical direction was further directed by one of the strangest music tours I have been on with a cast of characters containing some who did not get along at all and quit the tour, while others got along too well and created a different kind of havoc. With a pianist from the Pacific Rim as one source of inspiration, while the wheels on the strange bus tour kept turning on the American highways, the title Strange Rims captured the many layers I was living and seeing at the time. The music reflects and amplifies my own subjective responses to the artworks.The movements are organised in pairs, circling out from a still centre – No Woman, No Cry. The title for this centrepiece comes from Chris Ofili’s moving portrait of Doreen Lawrence, the mother of a teenager murdered in an unprovoked racist attack. As well as this specific reference, the artist intended the painting to be read as a universal portrayal of melancholy, solace, and grief. The two segments flanking No Woman, No Cry complete the central triptych. Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks explores loneliness and isolation, while Grayson Perry’s #Lamentation is a meditation on remembrance and the transience of life. In contrast to the rest of Wynwood Walls, the music here is dark and introspective.I want my time with you is a giant neon sign designed by Tracey Emin for St. Pancras Station, London. Selfie with Sunflowers is an essay written by Julian Barnes about our over-familiarisation with Van Gogh’s iconic sunflower paintings. The music is sentimental, bordering on schmaltz and kitsch. Sunflower Seeds and Infinity Room are a pair of moto perpetuo scherzos inspired by the minimalist installations of Ai Weiwei and Yayoi Kusama respectively. The opening section, Bathers at Asnières, suggests Seurat’s iconic painting, while the finale, Seurat’s Bathers, evokes Howard Hodgkin’s reworking of the Seurat using a blaze of vivid colours.The title of the quintet is borrowed from the Wynwood art district of Miami – an area characterised by the hundreds of colourful street murals which decorate the walls of old warehouses in the neighbourhood. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

BLURRED FORMATIONS - for Concert Accordion and Classical Guitar (2002) DURATION: 10 Minutes PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: While composing Blurred Formations, I was occupied with the ideas of ever-changing spots of color, constantly-moving ocean plants, sea anemones and fish shoals. Usually, these visual images fascinate our eyes, as their continuous formation is truly harmonious and somewhat mysterious. Yet, the endless formations are not necessarily easy to catch or view sharply. These blurred formations in their visual sense, intrigued me to search for their sonic equivalence. Through ever-changing clusters, vague arpeggiations and occasional chromatic melody, I tried to translate my images into sound. In some cases the blur is thick and dark, and in some cases thin, light and spacious. Both the accordion and guitar contribute to the clearness and the blurriness of the formations, each with its own unique timbre. They will add much to the Bass Trombone (Tuba) study/etude literature. We look forward to many performers using these valuable studies to improve their technique and musicianship. Originally written for the bassoon, these studies were favorites of the great trombone teacher, Emory Remington (1891-1971). While perhaps not concert material, they provide much more musical interest than the typical étude book. I have added dynamics and changed phrasings to be more suitable for the bass trombone (or tuba) while keeping the wide tessitura of the original. The keys have been changed to put each étude in a more suitable range, while the trills from the original bassoon version are included primarily for tuba players. These enjoyable and challenging studies will provide many hours of pleasurable practice. I have returned to these two volumes often over the years and hope that you will also find them useful and rewarding.

The piece explores complex musical writing and technical elements. My goal was to explore this kind of composition while following my typical way of writing music: expressing a story or an image through music.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Program note: Many times throughout history, cycles and elements of nature like birth, death and, of course, love have been extremely rich sources of inspiration for composers. However, even though it has been the main subject of many musical works in the past, it is still pretty rare for nature to be represented as a cycle used when describing humankind. Therefore, the goal of the piece Nature Morte is to not only show the cycle of life present in nature, but also address the cohabitation of death and life within this same cycle. Paintings by Jan Wijnants like Le repos des chasseurs aux faucons et Paysage avec bovins sur une route de campagne wonderfully illustrates this phenomena. This dutch painter often uses dead trees and big tree stumps in his work, which symbolizes typical fields and landscapes from the 17th century. This demonstration of coexistence between life and death, as well as this idea of cycles within life in nature, are the main sources of inspiration for this piece. Given that the idea of life and death within nature is inspired by motionless elements in visual art, it explains the chosen title: Nature morte (which could translate as “Still lifeâ€).

My original song, Poe's Christmas Eve Carousel Ride, is a microtonal melody for Celesta and/or Flute/Voice, based on Edgar Allan Poe's Evening Star.I imagined Edgar Allan Poe sitting on one of the carousel horses as it was going around and around. While this was happening, he was looking up at the night sky and thought about how much he liked the evening star better than the moon's light. (The celesta is known for its recognized sound in Tchaikovsky's, The Nutcracker Suite, The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.). I figured out how to put it in a quartal tone key in Finale, thanks to Google. I used quartal tones in the left hand, so it's a blend of a tonal melodic line in an atonal landscape. Edgar Allan Poe had a horrific life. His father abandoned his family when he was young. His mother died when he was a child. After he was adopted, although not legally, he had a falling out with his foster father, who alienated him and didn't let him know that his foster mother was dying. But, he did inform him after she died. Edgar married his cousin, Virginia Clem, who was 13 and he was 26. She died 11 years into their marriage due to tuberculosis. Thus, some writers say that all of his writings have a beautiful woman who died in his stories. He lost all of the women who loved him in his life. When you see his portrait, he has sad eyes, as someone who has suffered much. But, his writing has lived well beyond his lifetime of misery and heartache. My song symbolizes, not only Poe's poem, but his life, as very difficult, yet beautiful. With me poetry has not been a purpose, but a passion. Edgar Allan Poe. An inspiration I used for my musical poem was the ocean and it’s repetition of waves as they fall in to the shoreline. I grew up near the ocean and remember how the sounds of the relentless waves used tocalm me. While it was the repetitive sound of the sea that moved me as a child, today, I observed that each wave was not the same but in fact slightly different. I was amazed that it seemed that no two waves looked or sounded the same to me. This natural occurrence seemed to mirror my love for wife Carla. Each day was just something a tiny bit different. It was very natural to make these kinds of life experience connections. Bridges that joined nature, love and art. The poem begins slowly and inquisitively and builds through in intensity with loud and mightily passionate moments of emotion before the music comes down peacefully and reflectively, until the last statement played by the violin signifies that the sea is calm once again. ALL PURCHASES COME WITH SCORE AND PARTSWhen I was a young child and I would ask my mother for something she would often, in the midst of all her busy jobs, say to me, “Oh, give me a minuet!â€, meaning jokingly a minute, of course, before she could tend to my wishes.  This meant that I grew up believing that a minuet and a minute meant the same thing and could be equally interchanged. You can then imagine my amazement and amusement at around 13/14 years of age when I discovered through my music studies that a minuet was in fact a type of musical form and dance! Therefore, it went without saying that at some point in my music writing life I just HAD to write my Mum a minuet! So, here is the minuet she so often unwittingly asked me for throughout our lives! She attended the premiere of the Flute, violin and piano arrangement in Bolton, UK, and was highly amused (and not a little chuffed) by the story behind the piece!Naturally, the piece is dedicated to my mother, Margaret (Pearl) Denny, and was finally written in June 2015 for Gary Woolf and the Banda Di Musica in Germany.Its duration is about 7/8 minutes long and it is intended for junior strings. Violins 1 and 2 are of moderate difficulty, while the Violin 3/violas, cellos/basses are simpler.There is a violin solo throughout (moderate difficulty), to be played by the Leader, but is not a concerto-style solo, but rather one that weaves in and out of the texture throughout the piece.The piece is in a minuet and Trio style and is light, tuneful and fun. There are 3 arrangements available:No.1 – School Arrangement: Violins 1, 2 and 3, Cellos 1 and 2No.2 – Standard Arrangement: Violins 1 and 2, violas, cellos, Double bassesNo.3 – Violin, flute and piano.  This arrangement is of a more advanced standard than the string orchestra arrangements and would suit players of approximately grade 7 upwards.Â

Here are the program notes of Trombotriptych for solo Trombone and Percussion by composer Brian Kershner.Trombotriptych is the first piece I have written for the trombone in the main, solo role. I decided to mount the work as a duo with limited percussion, one player, and just two instruments, Woodblock and Bongos. The piece allowed me to learn about and explore the many extended techniques that the trombone can produce. I was grateful to work with the person, for whom the piece was written, Topher Logan, as this is such an immense help. The trombone is capable of great, almost oratorical power, as well as sweet, horn-like lyricism. There are portions of the piece which utilize a couple of different mutes, and the open and closed colors of the Harmon mute, slide and position changes for timbre color, glissandi, as well as multiphonics, which on this instrument are produced by using the voice, singing while playing. There are contrasting tempi in the work, including a middle section which seems barless, although is notated traditionally, and an up tempo section toward the end with exciting interplay between the instruments. It is hoped that the work captures the many sides of this most noble, heroic, and yet vocally pure member of the brass family.The music is appropriate for very advanced performers and is about 9 minutes in length.
