String Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1286698 Composed by James Nathaniel Holland. 21st Century,Broadway,Contemporary,Musical/Show,Opera. Score and Parts. 146 pages. James Nathaniel Holland #877732. Published by James Nathaniel Holland (A0.1286698). INDIVIDUAL INSTRUMENTS PARTS 2 of 2 (Harp and Strings).  This four act contemporary opera, original libretto and music, by 21st century American composer James Nathaniel Holland is the story of the triumph of Love over Evil, however delayed, and the power of keeping steadfast to one’s righteous promise.  Based on the German fairy tale The Six Swans, in a kingdom, during Saxon times, the murderous daughter of an evil entity, Ravia, infiltrates and takes over the lives of a royal family due to the King’s rash promise to marry her many years before. The royal children are sent away by their father for safety to a hidden, woodland cottage, but Ravia discovers where they are and hexes the younger siblings, turning them into swallows.  Usha, the eldest, escapes and flees to the wilderness and is visited by the apparition of her dead mother who explains what is going on and that Usha must swear an oath of silence for six years to break the spell and change her siblings back into human form.Five years pass and a dashing and kind king, Rohric, of another kingdom, finds Usha while hunting, falls in love with and marries her, but Usha must remain silent and cannot reveal who she is.  Ravia, who now is sole queen of the old kingdom, is invited by Rohric’s nobles with hope to secure a “proper†wedding for Rohric.  Usha is accused falsely of killing her own child by the two and is sentenced to be burned at the stake, but as the bell tolls she finally can declare her innocence.  To the crowd’s amazement her siblings change back, all truth is revealed, and for Ravia’s failure, she is dragged back to hell by demons.  Singers:  King Alfred (bass), Ravia (soprano), Princess Usha (mezzo), Queen Mother Arna (soprano), the royal siblings (children’s/boy’s chorus), King Rohric (Tenor), The Evil Noble (baritone), An angel/a demon (bass), SATB ChorusScored for full orchestra.  Instrumentation:  picc/treble recorder, fl12, ob12, eh, cl12, bsn12, hrn 123, tpt123, trom12, tba, timp, perc.12 (bd, crash cym, ride cym with soft mallets and stick, small gong, wood blk, glk, chimes, snar, tri), hrp, stringsDuration:  2 hoursFull Orchestral Score (concert pitch), Piano Vocal Score and Instruments Parts 1 (woodwinds, brass, perc.) and Parts 2 (harp and strings) sold separately.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1183534 Composed by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de St. Georges. Arranged by Robert Debbaut. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Multicultural,World. 28 pages. ROBERT DEBBAUT #783207. Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.1183534). How is it that one can be born a slave in French colonial Guadeloupe and rise to be among Paris’ musical giants, to become a colonel in the French Army as well as the frequent dinner guest of princes and potentates? The story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is surely an interesting one, even the stuff of which movies are made.Joseph Bologne’s father, Georges Bologne de Saint-Georges was a French planter. Saint-Georges was the name of his plantation. He impregnated Anne, the Senegalese slave of his wife, who bore him a son in 1745. Uncharacteristic of many of these sort of relationships he acknowledged the child was his and gave him his family name. When he was seven Bologne’s father took him to Paris for his education, enrolling him in a boarding school. Two years later he and the child’s mother returned to France and set up housekeeping as a family in Paris’ Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. At age thirteen Joseph’s father enrolled him in the Royal Technical Academy of Fencing and Swordsmanship. He quickly became the finest swordsman in the academy, perhaps in all of Paris. Upon graduation he was made an Officer of the King’s Bodyguard and a chevalier (an honorary knighthood). He went on to serve tours of duty in the French Army during the Seven Years War (1756-1763) and later after the French Revolution, where he was Colonel and commander of an all-Black regiment of the Revolutionary Army. All this in spite of the fact that French law forbade him, a man of African heritage, to become a citizen, to retain his father’s royal title of “Gentleman of the King’s Chamber,†or to marry outside his class. There is limited information about Bologne’s musical training, but he was obviously so well-skilled that Italian violinist-composer Antonio Lolli (1725-1802) wrote two violin concertos for him and French composer François-Joseph Gossec (1734-1829) dedicated his set of String Trios, Op. 9 to Bologne. Lolli may have worked with him on violin technique and Gossec composition, but this may be apocryphal. Bologne played in Gossec’s orchestra, and was later both leader and conductor of the group. As a composer Joseph Bologne was quite prolific, composing six operas, fourteen violin concertos, four symphonies concertantes, and numerous chamber works and songs. His Six String Quartets, Op. 1, Nos. 1-6 date from 1770-1771 and were published by the Paris publishing house of Jean-Georges Sieber (1738-1822) in 1773 (There are a total of 18 quartets: Six Quartets “au goût du jour†[up-to-date] from 1779 and the Opus 14 set of six which date from 1785). The Opus 1 quartets are dedicated to Anne Louis Alexandre de Montmorency (1724-1812), 7th Prince of Robeck (Robecq) and Grand Duke of Spain. The Opus 1 quartets all display a similarity to the Italian opera overtures from earlier in the Eighteenth Century (often called “sinfoniaâ€) in that they have an overall “A-B-A†form with the ‘A’ sections being robust allegros and all ‘B’ sections marked “rondo.†As such, in arranging them for string orchestra it seemed quite natural to rename them “overtures.†Certain liberties were taken by the arranger in order to maintain the integrity of the classic Rondo formula. All six have been arranged in this manner for string orchestra. They vary in length from twelve to almost twenty minutes. If you wish to obtain parts, write to debbaut@gmail.com and pay $42 via venmo or $40 via personal check and they will be sent to you in pdf format.

ROBERT DEBBAUT #783208. Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.1183535). String Orchestra - Level 5 - SKU: A0.942953 Composed by Geoffrey Peterson. Contemporary. Score and parts. 43 pages. Geoffrey Peterson #4267231. Published by Geoffrey Peterson (A0.942953). Link to complete recording: https://soundcloud.com/geoffrey-peterson/sets/the-edmund-fitzgerald-concerto On November 9th, 1975, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald left port in Superior, Wisconsin. The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. In addition, a chime is rung 29 times during the final bars of the concerto to memorialize the men who lost their lives. The Crew of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald: Michael E. Armagost, Frederick J. Beetcher, Thomas D. Bentsen, Edward F. Bindon, Thomas D. Borgeson, Oliver J. Champeau, Nolan S. Church, Ransom E. Cundy, Thomas E. Edwards, Russell G. Haskell, George J. Holl, Bruce L. Published by Goomba Publishing Company (GPC) (A0.908695). I composed Aria For Strings for the intermediate string orchestra. I included compositional devices such as pizzicato and tremolo, as well as arco. The slow tempo should aid in the performance of the syncopated rhythms as well as the sixteenth notes. I hope you and your orchestra will enjoy rehearsing and performing my composition. Thank you!

Notturno, is the most famous movement of Borodin’s 1881, String Quartet No. 2 in D major. The solo cello part in the original is distributed to other voices to maintain student interest. Bowings have been carefully edited by Dr. Priscilla Howard creating a beautiful and lyrical selection. Originally for two pianos, the Borodin Helena Polka is a jovial piece with typical changes of pace to reflect the dance form. As the polka is only two and one-half minutes in length, it will serve nicely as a second movement to the Notturno. All bowings are included and a Violin3/substitute for Viola part is included to bolster the Viola section.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.859857 Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Arranged by Steven Kruse. Children,Christmas,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 107 pages. String Play for All #2918283. Published by String Play for All (A0.859857). String Play for All offers arrangements of the great classics for violin and string ensembles of mixed levels and abilities. This arrangement of Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker includes six violin parts. The advanced violin part, which is optional, includes third and fourth positions. The Violin Book 1 part is designed for students on the level of Suzuki Violin School, Book 1. The Twinkle part consists mostly of open strings and can be learned by rote. Have all your group classes or string orchestra classes play together in this well-known Tchaikovsky classic. Also available: March of the Toy Soldiers, Arabian Dance, and Trepak, all from the Nutcracker. There are four copies of each string part included, along with the score and a piano part, intended mainly for rehearsal purposes and optional for performances. Of these selections from The Nutcracker, Waltz of the Flowers is the most difficult and challenging, due to the chromaticism of the original score.

String Orchestra - Level 2 - SKU: A0.808194 Composed by Mark W. Huxhold. Instructional. Score and parts. 68 pages. Mark Wayne Music, LLC #3489363. Published by Mark Wayne Music, LLC (A0.808194). Developed by a String Specialist for the String Specialist by Mark W. Huxhold (Who's Who Among America's Teachers- 2000, 2005, 2006) I developed this method over a 20 year period as a school orchestra teacher faced with ever diminishing classroom instructional time. My goal was to preserve and articulate the scope and sequence of the curriculum in a concise and efficient manner. This method is intended to foster music reading skills from the beginning when used in conjunction with teacher initiated rote and modeling teaching techniques. Book 2 continues in standard portrait format at 100% scale. Curriculum Scope & Sequence Prerequisite: Book 1 or 1st position (bass 1st & 3rd pos.) on A and D strings. D major, Common time. Eighth, quarter and half notes. Detáche and whole bowing. Technique: Position:violin/viola-1st position (viola half pos.), cello- 1st and extended position, bass- half, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3 1/2 position. Bowing: Slurs, Richochet Keys: G, C, F/d, Bb/g, Eb/c, A/f#, b, e, a Rhythm Time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 6/8 Notes/Rests: whole, eight, dotted half, sixteenth, dotted quarter & eight, eighth & quarter triplets Concerning the Double BassMy experience as a classroom teacher and a bassist has convinced me that a beginning bassist develops best in a heterogeneous string class when playing the same contour as the other instruments. This is achieved by introducing the bassist to 3rd position when the other instruments learn C# and D on the A string. I do advocate marking 3rd position on the fingerboard. Another benefit is that the bassist is able to develop good tone production and intonation more easily on the higher 2 strings.

It was officially adopted as the national anthem of Poland in 1926, although it had been its unofficial one since the end of the First World War in 1918. The lyrics were written by Józef Wybicki in July 1797. The music is a based on a Polish folk tune. This arrangement can be performed by as few as six players, or as many as a large string orchestra.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1432036 By Juan Maria Solare. By Juan Maria Solare. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Historic,Instructional. 8 pages. Juan Maria Solare #1012516. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.1432036). Orchestraining is a cycle of orchestral studies, each focusing on different aspects of performance. These studies are specifically designed for non-professional orchestras, although any orchestra will improve by playing some of these pieces during rehearsals. It is always necessary to pay attention to intonation and many other aspects of orchestral performance. In addition, these studies are also useful for orchestral conducting students. For example, it is essential to know how to conduct a simultaneous attack of a chord that does not begin on the first beat, but a eighth note after the third beat.I began writing these studies around 2013, when I took over the direction of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft and noticed the complete absence of repertoire of this kind. As a pianist, I am accustomed to studies by Carl Czerny or playing scales. Each individual instrumentalist knows studies of technique for their instrument. However, there are no, or at least I am not aware of, similar studies for orchestral performance technique and the specific difficulties of ensemble playing that it requires. The cycle Orchestraining aims to fill this gap.The sixth etude focuses on the difficult subject of harmonics in the strings. In the classical repertorire, harmonics are not so present as other orchestral colors. There fore, it is particularly difficult to find repertory to train them.

String Orchestra - SKU: A0.792927 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by J. Richard Dixon. Baroque. Score and parts. 42 pages. Estes Music Publishers #3514601. Published by Estes Music Publishers (A0.792927). Originally written by JS Bach for double choir, Der Geist hilt unsrer Schwachheit aug has been edited and arranged here for string orchestra. The strings are divided into eight parts; four violin, two viola, cello and bass. This is a great work for an advanced high school orchestra, as well as college and professional orchestras. Every part is an integral part of the whole work, so each player has the opportunity play a leading role in the piece. It also allows the creativity of the director to come into play as to the positioning of the orchestra. It can be divided into two orchestras spaced apart or grouped into sections of six or seven, knowing that the upper strings greatly out number the cello and especially basses. String set sold separately.

Published by Travis Patton (A0.1420318). Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles arranged for string orchestra or string quartet. Students and audiences will recognize this Beatles tune and enjoy its dramatic flair. The mysterious intro leads into driving quarter notes, challenging students with changing syncopations and accent patterns. The chorus has a galloping, cinematic feel, which quickly comes down for a verse featuring melody in the low strings. A chorale-like chorus allows students to focus on expression and legato playing. After a grand pause, the violins pick it up into the galloping final chorus with added technical sixteenth notes and the chart ends with a ritardando into a sustained minor chord. Arranged by Travis Patton. www.travispatton.com.

The middle section features a smooth bowing section with melody canon by sections. The upper strings have a chance to play a tremolo which leads into the finale and the dotted eighths and sixteenth notes give it a really precise feeling of a steady march tempo. Enjoy!
