Piano Solo - Advanced Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Claude Debussy/Robert Orledge. 20th Century, Impressionistic, Repertoire, Recital. Score. 71 pages. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing
Contains A Night in the House of Usher Un Jour affreux avec Le Diable dans le beffroi, Les accords de septime regrettent!!!, Petite Valse,Ftes galantes, and Prlude ?L?Histoire de Tristan?
From Robert Orledge's notes:
My interest in the wonderful music of Claude Debussy began in the 1980s when I researched and published a book with Cambridge University Press entitled Debussy and the Theatre. During the course of my studies in Paris, I was amazed to discover that Debussy planned over 50 theatrical works but only finished two of these entirely by himself (the opera Pellas et Mlisande in 1893?1902 and the ballet Jeux for Diaghilev?s Ballets Russes in 1912?13). Of the rest, many were never started musically (like Siddartha and Orphe-roi with the Oriental scholar Victor Segalen, 1907); some had a few tantalising sketches (like the Edgar Allan Poe opera Le Diable dans le beffroi, 1902?03); some were half-finished (like his other Poe opera La Chute de la Maison Usher, 1908?17); while others were musically complete but had their orchestrations completed by other composers (like Khamma, by Charles Koechlin, 1912?13; or Le Martyre de Saint Sbastien and La Bote joujoux by his ?angel of corrections? [?l?ange des Corrections?] Andr Caplet in 1911 and 1919 respectively).
For it has to be admitted that what some scholars call Debussy?s ?compulsive achievement? could equally well be viewed as laziness, especially as far as the minute detail required for calligraphing his orchestral scores was concerned. It was as if creating the music itself was of greater importance than controlling its final sound, even if Debussy was an imaginative orchestrator when he found the time and energy to do it. It also seems true that Debussy also preferred inventing ideas to turning them into complete pieces. However, despite the lack of detail in many of his sketches (missing clefs, key signatures, dynamics, phrasing, etc.) the notes themselves are surprisingly accurate, whether or not they can be compared with a later draft. Thus, a large number of sketches exist for his Chinese ballet No-ja-li ou Le Palais du Silence and it is not too difficult to see which parts of Georges de Feure?s 1913 scenario (see below) inspired which ideas. But Debussy hardly made any attempt to join them together after the first few bars.
It was usually up to his publisher, Jacques Durand, to find solutions when Debussy risked a breach of contract. Debussy was supposed to supervise the orchestrations completed by others, but this supervision was usually very light and restricted to quiet, sensitive moments in which problems were easier to spot. Far from jealously guarding every one of his created notes, as Ravel did, Debussy once even went as far as to ask Koechlin to ?write a ballet for him that he would sign? on 26 March 1914 when he was hard-pressed to fulfil his lucrative contract for No-ja-li with Andr Charlot at the Alhambra Theatre in London. In the end, Debussy (through Durand) sent Charlot the symphonic suite Printemps instead, whose orchestration had been completed by Henri Busser in the Spring of 1912.
So, when I was offered early retirement as Professor of Music at Liverpool University in 2004, I seized the opportunity it would give me to spend time trying to reconstruct some of Debussy?s lost potential masterpieces from his existing sketches and drafts?then orchestrating them in Debussy?s style when this was appropriate. I had begun this mission in 2001 with the most promising project, the missing parts of Scene 2 of La Chute de la Maison Usher and the sheer joy it gave me at every stage persuaded me to tackle other projects, especially when Debussy experts were unable to identify exactly where I took over from Debussy (and vice versa) in Usher.

Published by Rocco Di Pietro (A0.1290932). “The emotion it seems roused in children when they are left alone in the darkis not dread, but desire. An overwhelming and fearful longing for the one whocan bring them solace for an apparent loss of self in the absence of the visible world. The light becomes both a beacon and a being, a summons and a response, illuminatingthe darkness that is a prelude to sleep, which is next door to the next world.â€~ J. Lord ~I. The PlaygroundThe child’s journey starts in a toxic playground at home.II. Roaming Among the CuckoosThe child roams among cuckoos, who make their nests in other creatures’homes. He knows this well, with his plethora of step dads.III. First Loss, Inner FlightThe child experiences his first loss, and goes into inner flight.IV. A Curious StoryThe actual awaited long journey of the child begins. A very curious storyindeed. V. Hospitality Dream (About Strange Lands and Peoples)At last, the child arrives with his dream of hospitality among strange landsand peoples, and is met with a rude, if not deadly, awakening.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1026725 Composed by Jesse Holan. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary. Score. 3 pages. Jesse Holan Enterprises #6359527. Published by Jesse Holan Enterprises (A0.1026725). The Island is the sister vignette another piano piece I wrote, Fives, now focusing on color as a design principle instead of rhythm. Since sound is heard from 20 to 20k Hz and light is perceived from about 375 to 750 THz, there is a huge speed difference between the two kinds of waves, but overall, waves are waves. My synesthetic view of reality allows me to see pictures and colors when I hear tones. To me, C is White, Db is Orange, D is Yellow, Eb is Seafoam, E is Green, F is Brown, Gb is Red, G is Grey, Ab is Violet, A is Pink, Bb is Gold, and B is Blue. There is some logical flow to my chromatic rainbow, but admittedly it’s a little interpretive. It’s just what I see! Associating colors with notes is a personalized thing; two of my friends both have perfect pitch yet each perceive unique chromatic schemes in their minds for tones, which also differ from mine. This project shows how I use my mental color wheel to musically paint a stormy island sunset.

Spain (I Can Recall) - Al Jarreau (Vocal/Synthesizer Solo/Scat Solo)This is a lead sheet with a complete copy of the synthesizer solo and scat solo of the vocal version of Chick Corea's famous song Spain from the album This Time released in 1980 by Al Jarreau, a jazz fusion singer known for his singing percussion.PDF format, 4 pages.Lyrics:Al Jarreau, Arthur J. Maren Composer:Chick Corea, Joaquin Vidre RodrigoVocal:Al Jarreau Synthesizer & Rhodes Electric Piano:Larry Williams Bass: Abraham Laboriel Drums: Steve Gadd Produced by Jay GraydonSong Description  This is a jazz fusion classic from Chick Corea's 1972 Return To Forever album, Light As A Feather, with lyrics by Al himself.  The synthesizer solo was played by Larry Williams, a keyboardist and saxophonist of the fusion band Seawind, who skillfully used upper structure triad arpeggios to drive the song in a wide range.  Al's scat solo in the latter half of the song is a highlight. It starts with a relaxed phrase, moving in a close range in the first half, and shows a sign of excitement with flutter tangling in D (a technique unique to wind instruments that makes the sound tremble by fine movements of the tongue) at the beginning of the second half. The last four bars of the song are a perfect blend of alternating scales and blue notes, folding in exquisite ups and downs, and finally resolving to B major at the end.  In the chord progression, the second half of [B] and Gmaj7 (two beats after Dmaj7) in [E] and [M] are not Chick Corea's original, but he seems to use them in this arrangement.

Album & Songbook review by: Kathy Parsons (MainlyPiano.com):
I have discovered a real wealth of great solo piano Christmas CDs this year! Isadar?s In Search For the Meaning of Christmas definitely falls into this category! Thoughtful, introspective, and a bit moody, Isadar?s arrangements are true to the carols (with some small melody changes in ?Bring a Torch? and ?Carol of the Bells? that bother me just a little) and still seem very personal. ?Bring a Torch?, ?The Holly and the Ivy?, and ?I Saw Three Ships? are given a lighthearted, joyful treatment. ?Star of Wonder (We Three Kings)?, ?What Child Is This??, ?The Coventry Carol?, and ?Sing We Now of Christmas? are all minor, somber, reverent pieces, and all four are given loving arrangements that keep the dark, mysterious nature of the songs and reflect Isadar?s own sensibilities. ?Carol of the Bells? and Isadar's take on Liz Story?s arrangement of ?Greensleeves? are energetic without losing all abandon. ?Silent Night? and ?It Came Upon a Midnight Clear? present us with a very cold, deep solitude - both feel like late night with moonlight reflecting off the snow. Both are moody, but very beautifully so. George Winston?s ?December? is one of my all-time favorite holiday albums, and I feel In Search For the Meaning of Christmas holds up exceptionally well next to it. This is an excellent collection of Christmas music, and I highly recommend it!
In Search For the Meaning of Christmas is the companion songbook to Isadar?s 1999 solo piano release by the same name. Meticulously transcribed note-for-note by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing, the music is faithful to the recording in every way (except for the pianist - YOU!). The scores are clear, concise, and easy to read, and also include chord indications for improvisation or the use of instruments other than or in addition to the piano. Isadar?s arrangements cover a whole range of emotions, from very dark and somber to joyful and buoyant. All of the pieces from the CD are here, including Isadar?s homage to Liz Story and her beautiful version of ?Greensleeves.? My personal favorites of the eleven songs in this book are the bright and cheerful ?Bring A Torch,? ?What Child Is This??, ?Greensleeves,? the darkly gorgeous ?The Coventry Carol,? and ?Sing We Now of Christmas.? Other titles that I really like are ?Children Go Where I Send Thee/The Holly and the Ivy,? ?Star of Wonder (We Three Kings)," ?Carol of the Bells,? and the effervescent ?Three Ships.? ?Silent? (Silent Night) and ?Midnight? (It Came Upon a Midnight Clear) are a bit too dark for my own holiday tastes, but are interesting and very personal arrangements. This book will make a great addition to your holiday sheet music collection and is available from isadar.com and amazon.com.

End Of The LineAlbum & Songbook review by:  Kathy Parsons (MainlyPiano.com):Isadar’s fourth solo piano album is a blend of smooth jazz and new age stylings, showing both his impressive technique and sensitivity to melody. Several of the eight selections are free-form and improvisational, revealing some of Liz Story’s influence on his music. Some of Isadar’s earlier recordings have very dark, moody sections, but this one stays fairly upbeat and optimistic without being ear candy. The music is complex enough to sink your teeth into, and yet is accessible enough to enjoy as a backdrop to a quiet dinner or an evening with a good book. Joyful Running begins the journey with an exuberant and uplifting piece that reminds me a little of some of Spencer Brewer’s bouncier compositions. Fountain of Life is a beautiful piece with a water-like flow that never stops in its 10 1/2 minutes. I listened to this CD several times without realizing that this song was that long. It flows and meanders so effortlessly that it seemed no longer than the other seven selections, most of which are between four and five minutes in length. Unstructured and free, this is one of my favorite tracks. I also really like the title track, which is even more abstract and unstructured. The tone is of searching and moving forward. End of the Line is my favorite on this album. Very introspective and contemplative, this seems to be a very personal piece. It is the most somber track, but one still senses hope despite the ending of something dear and important. Or maybe it’s simply the end of the journey and the dread of returning to real life - I feel this way on the last day of my vacations! It is a wonderful and moving closing to an excellent album. The companion songbook is expertly transcribed and engraved by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing. The layout of the music is clear and uncluttered, and the notation includes pedal markings and dynamics that allow the pianist to express the music as closely as possible to how Isadar played it on the recording.  A few of the pieces are quite long and require a more advanced pianist who is able to express the nuances that keep the recording so interesting, but several of the pieces are well within the capabilities of upper intermediate players.  Some of the rhythms are a little bit tricky, but the majority of the left hand parts are running eighth notes, which make it easier.  None of the key signatures are difficult, and none of the chords have a reach of more than an octave, making this music very playable for smaller hands.  My favorite pieces to play in this book are Joyful Running, Voice of God (Thanksgiving), Smoke Signals, and End of the Line.Isadar is an artist on both Enlightened Piano Radio & Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, the latter featuring some of today's biggest names in solo piano music, including Ludovico Einaudi, David Nevue, Brian Crain, Kevin Kern, Robin Spielberg, Michele McLaughlin, Philip Wesley and over 300 more... Piano Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.933520 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, Cees Nieuwenhuizen. Classical. Score. 48 pages. Upstream Music #482215. Published by Upstream Music (A0.933520). There are many more unfinished than completed compositions of Beethoven that have been preserved. ln these fragments one sees ideas for individual works. A large number of sketchbooks and sketches from the composer were preserved and are housed in libraries and private collections all over the globe. Some sketches are no more than brief experiments or short elaborated ideas, but there are also fragments preserved that nearly give us a complete picture of a composition. In the so-called Kafka sketchbook, which was published in 1970 in London, approximately 500 fragments of manuscripts were bundled that stem from 1786 - 1799. The Fantasia Sonata in D (deest 45) for piano forte in three parts, was hidden in the archives since 1792. This sonata of the young Beethoven, with striking similarities to the Moonlight sonata and the Pastorale has never been performed on stage. Young pianotalent Martin Oei played it for the first time in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, October 21st, 2012. The large, over 1100 bars comprising torso now known as Fantasia Sonata in D from 1792, cannot be called a sketch anymore, although Beethoven has not completed the work and used many ideas in other, later works. The reconstruction of the sketches was done by the Dutch Beethoven musicologist and composer Cees Nieuwenhuizen. The piece was probably written in Bonn, three years before he started to write his first official piano sonata of a series of 32 sonatas. In November 1792 Beethoven went from Bonn to Vienna to study with the famous composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). Beethoven rapidly proceeded to make his mark as a brilliant keyboard performer and as a gifted young composer with a number of works to his credit. In 1795 his first mature published works appeared, and his career was officially launched. Striking harmonies The re-using of previously drafted material is quite common in Beethoven's works. Apparently the material wasn't yet ripe enough at the time of its origination, or perhaps Beethoven changed his mind with regards to the new composition. This could very well be so regarding the torso from Kafka’s sketchbook that we now call the Piano Fantasia sonata in D. This piece contains 1100 bars of music, not taking into account the alternative bars. The piece is composed by Beethoven in 1792 - 1793 and was set up as a tripartite sonata in D with remarkable abnormalities in terms of form and content. There are striking harmonies that cannot be found in other works composed in that same period. It’s possible that the composer didn’t have the courage to publish it or that indeed the time was not yet ripe for it. Finally the composer let the draft go and never came back to it. Or did he? Thematic similarities We find phrases in several later works that share similarities with ideas and themes from Fantasia sonata in D. The first part of Fantasia sonata has the same theme as the trio of the third movement of Symphony no. 7 (in A Major Opus 92). Even the key and also the rhythm in 3/4 time are the same. This cannot be a coincidence. Similar mood and thematic parallels can be found in the Pastorale, the Sonata for piano no. 15 (Opus 28): it is striking that this piece is also composed in D and in 3/4 time. We find similar dramatic expression in the Sonata for piano no. I 7 in d minor Opus 31 no. 2. The second movement of the Fantasia sonata nearly has the same theme as the second movement of the Sonata for piano no. 23 in minor (the Appassionato Opus 57). Martin Oei, Daiel Wayenberg, Cees Nieuwenhuizen at The World Premiere in The Concertgebouw Beethoven begins the third movement of the Fantasia sonata with the main theme of the first movement, but now in e minor. lts appearance in minor is an entirely new idea. Nevertheless Beethoven doesn't elaborate the idea any further because it disappears after 29 bars. Now a new agitated theme starts in d minor, which was announced in the first movement, but now reappears in its complete.

A collection of 10 pieces for the late intermediate/early advanced pianist. The pieces are reflective in nature and incorporate a variety of keys and styles.Winter inspires a sense of magic. Nature reflects a union with winter as the fauna and flora trust their instinctive essence and prepare. There is much to be learned by bearing witness to this symbiotic relationship. Winter summons a pause, an invitation to go within ourselves, and a return to nurturing the sacred within.I have always loved winter and the blanket of beauty created by the snow. I love the magic the snow contains as it glimmers when the light hits it. The extended darkness feels like a big hug, holding me as I snuggle in. I adore seeing Christmas lights both inside and outside homes. They create a joyful expression, changing like a kaleidoscope as the wind blows or the snow increases. This collection embraces child-like wonder and awe of winter. It stirs the imagination. It invites you on a path to wander your own winterscape.

Published by Sacred Vessel Recordings (ASCAP) (A0.1097957). Wheat is a 7 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of A flat major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. Though I was born in Missouri, I do think of Kansas as my home state - it’s where I spent the first five years of my life. One of the most beautiful sights (there or anywhere, in my opinion) is that of wheat fields holding up the sky for as far as the eye can see, swaying gently like waves upon the ocean. That sight was the inspiration for this piece. Other pieces available in this collection are: Bittersweet, Doc Bradley’s Waltz, Edith, Flight of Fancy, Jasper County, Late October, Lullaby, Marble In My Pocket, The Open Road, Prairie Sunset, Skipping Rocks at Shoal Creek, The Storm’s Promise, and Sunflowers.

Published by Andy Schmidt (A0.890137). The wonderful classic by the renowned Polish composer. Another case of beautiful music that pianists might avoid because of the technical challenges involved. Don’t worry...we’re going to get through this! Paderewski, we love you, but your hands were just too big. Mélodie has lots of large intervals in the left hand that many pianists can’t play comfortably. But that’s no excuse to give up on a lovely piece of piano music, right? My edition of this piece features helpful fingerings and grayed-out noteheads indicating which notes can be avoided. I’ve also highlighted some places where the right hand can reach down and play the highest note of some of these large chords, with the goal of being faithful to Paderewski’s intentions whenever possible. These places are indicated by my exclusive, ground-breaking green notehead technology, which is frequently seen in my other editions.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.977030 Composed by Paul SanGregory. Contemporary. Score. 10 pages. Distant Engraver Music #3534593. Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977030). These pieces are like little objects that are simple and direct, yet slightly eccentric. They often seem to be based on traditional notions of harmony or phrasing, but they don’t always get those aspects exactly right. It’s as if what appears to be common little figurines, upon closer inspection, reveal themselves to be more varied, colorful, complex and unpredictable than a quick glance might reveal. I - Mutable Phrase This piece sounds a bit obsessive because all the phrases begin the same way. It almost sounds like somebody repeating a simple one-phrase statement, but constantly changing it with the hope of writing a perfectly nuanced phrase. II - Sparks in Emptiness The use of the sostenuto pedal in this piece creates an effect of reverberating empty space. Within that space, little bursts of energy begin appearing. It sounds like flashes of light in an empty dark space. III - Silent Blue Tides This piece is based on a slowly moving and somewhat unpredictable chord progression. A duo of simple melodies then floats on that chord progression, rising and falling with the moods of that large blue sea.

With these piano sheets, you can play ?Bohemian Rhapsody? on piano!
It?s an accurate piano arrangement of the whole piece, including all parts, full melody & instrumental solos.
I believe this is the most accurate piano arrangement of the song you will find anywhere.
It?s a ?Bohemian Rhapsody? piano version in the song?s original key, it?s playable, and it sounds fantastic!
I also created sheet music of the same piano arrangement with the song?s full lyrics - you can get it here: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/21155920
?Bohemian Rhapsody? was, of course, written by the one and only Freddie Mercury.
It was included on Queen?s 1975 album ?A Night at the Opera? and became one of Queen?s biggest hits. Today, it is considered by many to be the best classic rock song of all time.
There?s a good reason why the 2018 biographical film about Freddie Mercuy (played by Rami Malek) is named after this song - arguably his greatest composition.
?Bohemian Rhapsody? is famous for its diverse parts: from the a-capella-intro to rock ballad verses, from hard rock guitar solos to operatic sections.
?Bohemian Rhapsody? really is the whole package - and all parts of it can sound surprisingly great on piano, if played right!
In my experience, many arrangements of the song seem to be lacking something: They are not accurate, don?t sound powerful enough, there are important parts or even whole sections missing.
So I took my time to create a piano arrangement of the song which I feel does justice to this wonderful piece.
I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I do!
Here are the full lyrics to ?Bohemian Rhapsody?:
?Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
A little high, little low
Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me
Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
Mama, oh oh
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters
Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, oh oh (anyway the wind blows)
I don't want to die
Sometimes wish I'd never been born at all
I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouch, Scaramouch will you do the Fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning very very frightening me
Gallileo, Gallileo, Gallileo, Gallileo, Gallileo, figaro, magnifico
I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me
He's just a poor boy from a poor family
Spare him his life from this monstrosity
Easy come easy go will you let me go
Bismillah, no we will not let you go, let him go
Bismillah, we will not let you go, let him go
Bismillah, we will not let you go, let me go
(Will not let you go) let me go (never, never let you go) let me go (never let me go)
Oh oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me for me for me
So you think you can stop me and spit in my eye
So you think you can love me and leave me to die
Oh baby can't do this to me baby
Just gotta get out just gotta get right outta here
Oh oh oh yeah, oh oh yeah
Nothing really matters
Anyone can see
Nothing really matters
Nothing really matters to me
Anyway the wind blows?

Piano Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1372143 By Michael Jackson. By James Ingram and Quincy Jones. Arranged by Steve Burks. Funk,Pop,R & B. Score. 6 pages. Steven L. Burks #956388. Published by Steven L. Burks (A0.1372143). This advanced-intermediate arrangement of the energetic R&B classic can be programmed for advanced piano students' concerts and recitals, as a change of pace from standard piano literature. This arrangement seeks to emulate the recording, implying guitar lines, vocal lines, and so forth. The 8va designation that appears beneath the bass clef indicates that the bass line should be played an octave lower (sometimes marked on scores as 8vb).It is essential to listen to the original recording in order to make sense of what might otherwise seem odd considered in light of traditional voice-leading practice. The duration of this abbreviated arrangement is approximately 3:35.I am a member of ASCAP. You may email me at steve@steveburksmusic. Thanks for considering my arrangement.

The battle is ended. The smoke begins to clear. As the gray light of day begins to filter through the slowly dissipating haze, the true cost of the war is made evident. Where there were cities…now only ruins and smoldering rubble remain. The survivors search for signs of life on either side, but there is little to be seen so profound is the devastation. This is what I tried to capture in the music: great sorrow, futility and hopelessness.

Timothy Stapay #836677. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1241298). This arrangement of You Are So Beautiful is written in a relaxed and romantic style. One of the great love songs of the 70's.You Are So Beautiful is a song written by Billy Preston and Bruce Fisher that was first released in 1974 on Preston's ninth studio album, The Kids & Me. It was also the B-side of his single Struttin'. Later that same year, English singer Joe Cocker released a slower version of the song on his album I Can Stand a Little Rain. Cocker's version was produced by Jim Price, and released as a single in November 1974. It became Cocker's highest-charting solo hit, peaking at number five on the United States' Billboard Hot 100 (Cocker's biggest hit on the pop chart was Up Where We Belong, a duet with Jennifer Warnes from the 1982 film An Officer And A Gentleman, which reached number 1 and at number four on Canada's Top Singles chart. Lyrics:[Chorus]You are so beautifulTo meYou are so beautifulTo meCan't you see[Post Chorus]You're everything I hoped forYou're everything I needYou are so beautiful to meTo me[Verse]Such joy and happiness you bringSuch joy and happiness you bringLike a dreamA guiding light that shines in the nightHeavens gift to meYou are so beautiful to me[Chorus]You are so beautifulTo meCan't you seeYou're everything I hoped forEvery, everything I needYou are so beautiful to me.

Frost on the Holly 8. Autumn Rivers 9. After the Rain PROGRAM NOTES: Glass-Colored Roses has been described as exquisitely beautiful, silly, clever, and odd, but nice, and that’s just for the title. It also seems to be a fair summary of the composition itself. The nine miniature pieces in this set dabble in the wide palate of tonal colors available on the piano, using compositional techniques from aleatoric to modal. The titles are more evocative than descriptive. If you find a hidden meaning in any part of this composition, enjoy it, but I didn’t put one there. Album & Songbook Review by: Kathy Parsons
I love this CD! It constantly amazes me how many outstanding composer/pianists there are out there - especially in relation to the few who are highly (commercially) successful within this broad genre. I would say that Active Imagination definitely belongs near the top of the heap. Isadar?s style is original, and his pianism is excellent. He lists his inspirations as Liz Story, Keith Jarrett, and Bill Evans, and I can hear traces of all three in his playing, but find his composing and playing styles to be uniquely his own.
The first three tracks are lively and upbeat (?Active Imagination?, ?Throwing the Dice?, and ?Where the Wild Things Are?) with an easy, jazzy, improvised feel. The meter changes are fascinating, and the bluesy beat on ?Wild Things? is infectious.
From there, the mood seems to gradually darken and become more introspective. ?Waiting? is a beautiful, flowing mood piece full of questions and a lovely melody line. Isadar?s cover of Liz Story?s ?Wedding Rain? is wonderful - this is a piece I often work on with my advanced students, and everything about Isadar?s interpretation of the piece seems right without being a carbon-copy of Liz?s recording.
?Feu Follet (the ?spook? light?)? has a nice, easy flow with a strong sense of mystery; it also has an unusual rhythm that lightens the mood and adds a bounce. ?Uncertainty? is cooler and more aloof, but gorgeous in its flowing introspection - that it ends with a major chord, feels like the soul-searching has had positive results. ?Love Chaconne? is the closing track, and is the longest and most abstract piece on the CD. The left hand plays a repeated pattern while the right hand goes off in several different directions (one of the primary characteristics of a ?chaconne?). Beautiful in its simplicity, this is the only track that seems to contain an element of pain and sorrow, but never dissolves into melodrama.
Active Imagination is excellent from start to finish and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes solo piano with substance and complexity, but is still accessible, melodic, and rhythmic. Bravo amundo!
Active Imagination Sheet Music Collection is the companion songbook to Isadar?s 1999 CD release, Active Imagination. The CD was one of my favorites for the year when I reviewed it for the print version of ?Wind and Wire? magazine, so I was really looking forward to the sheet music! Transcribed note-for-note by David Shenton of ShentonMusic.com (I proofed about half of the book, so I can attest to how accurate it is!), it is up to you to make the music sound as close to the CD as you want or to interpret the music and make your own statements with it.
One thing that really stands out about this collection is how much FUN it is to play. The rhythms are interesting and catchy, and the mood in several of the songs is playful and upbeat. This is especially true with the title song, ?Throwing the Dice,? ?Where the Wild Things Are,? and ?Feu Follet (the ?spook? light).? ?Waiting,? ?Love Chaconne,? and ?Uncertainty? are slower, more introspective, and a bit moody, making this a sheet music collection that contains a variety of moods and styles. The only piece missing from the book is Liz Story?s ?Wedding Rain,? but the sheet music for that song is available in some of Ms. Story?s own collections.
Early-advanced players should have no trouble with this music. The timing on some of the songs is a little bit tricky, but if you count it as you are learning it, it will fall into place.
If you haven?t heard the CD, check it out, too! This book is available here from SMP, isadar.com and amazon.com. Highly recommended!
