Piano Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.533554 Composed by Carson Cooman. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score. 37 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3018601. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533554). I. (Flowing)II. (Fast, nimble)III. (Funereal) (in memoriam Donald Martino)IV. (Dancing)V. (Distant, echoing) (for Richard and Dee Wilson)VI. (Moderate, singing, with humor) (for Michael Finnissy)VII. (Slow, very lyrical)VIII. (March)IX. (Envoi: Very slow, from afar)Nine Preludes (2007) for piano was written for and is dedicated to pianist Marilyn Nonken; it was commissioned byRichard Mason.Although the work is composed as a set of discrete movements, the preludes are very much interconnected, as motivicand developmental ideas run throughout the entire set. The basic musical material (founded upon collections of minorand major thirds) is shared among all nine movements. An elegiac quality runs throughout the work. The first prelude (Flowing) is inspired by the piano music of Johannes Brahms, whose contributions to the instrument’sliterature have been a significant and ongoing influence on my work. The second prelude is fast and bright. Consistent staccato textures are maintained as the two hands intertwine. The third prelude (Funereal) is dedicated to the memory of American composer Donald Martino (1931–2005). The musicrefers very obliquely to Martino’s setting of Robert Herrick’s poems of death and eternity in The White Island (1985).The fourth prelude (Dancing) is light and buoyant. After a melodic middle section, the opening music reverses itself to theend. The fifth prelude (Distant, echoing) is dedicated to Richard and Dee Wilson. Through large blocks of sustained sound (bothquiet and loud), the movement explores certain harmonic colors of the piano. The sixth prelude (Moderate, singing, with humor) is dedicated to English composer Michael Finnissy. The opening ismarked “like an ‘off-kilter’ folk song,†and this original melody is subjected to a variety of transformations and textures. The rhythmic patterns are constantly in flux. The seventh prelude (Slow, very lyrical) is melodic and passionate, with a nocturnal character. The middle builds to anintense climax before dying away. The eighth prelude (March) is spiky and crisp. In the trio, the march theme is turned first into a tonal ballad beforegradually transforming back into the language of the march. A faster reprise of the opening music follows. The ninth prelude (Envoi: Very slow, from afar) is an elegaic “farewell.†Romantic gestures and harmonies try to assertthemselves before the music dies away.Performance Note: Although it is preferred that the entire set of nine preludes be played in concert, individual preludes (or smallerassembled groupings) may be performed when necessary for programming needs. If the entire set is played, however, the order of thepreludes should not be changed. The movements should be listed in the program in the format shown at the top of this page.Recorded by Donna Amato on Carson Cooman: Piano works ALTARUS AIR-CD-9015

Piano Solo - Level 5 - SKU: A0.533692 Composed by Carson Cooman. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary,Sacred,Standards. Score. 17 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3038635. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533692). Biblicals: Concerto for Solo Piano in Five Movements (1998) was commissioned from thecomposer by an anonymous benefactor for pianist Kathleen Supové in tribute of her tirelesssupport of new music. The work is in five movements, each inspired by a different biblical quotation which isquoted in the score before each movement. If possible, these passages should be printed inthe program or read aloud before the performance of the work. Each movement isprogrammatic only in an internal sense. While the movements do not attempt to directlyportray the action of the passage in a storybook sense, they do attempt to capture the overallaffect of the verse. The form of the work is as a concerto for solo piano drawing on a titlethat has been used in the past by numerous composers. Likewise, although the work does notinvolve an orchestra, I have titled it concerto because it contains elements of a concerto solopart and because of the virtuosity required to perform the work. The work explores a widerangeof styles from quasi-lyrical to highly chromatic. Throughout, the work has a rhythmicintensity which should be observed by the performer. The first movement, Hovering Over the Waters, makes use of an irregular rhythmic patternintroduced in the opening measure and used throughout the work. Irregular and nervousrhythms using chromatic intervals pervade the entire movement. The second movement, Baldhead, is a forceful and loud movement making use of the clashbetween diatonic and pentatonic clusters. It is relentless in its pounding energy, irregularrhythms, and volume. This movement is dedicated to American composer Daniel Pinkhamon the occasion his 75th birthday in 1998. The connection of this movement to Pinkhamcomes in the superimposition of pentatonic and diatonic clusters, a technique used so well inone of my favorite Pinkham works, Blessings for Organ (1978).The third movement, Forgiven and Free, presents a tranquil scene involving the building ofchords, standard and otherwise, through the adding of tones one at a time. Brief chromaticmelodies appear and then disappear quickly. The fourth movement, Under the Sun, makes use of a motive involving four chords over a lefthand bass consisting of a major-tenth chord. This motive appears throughout the movement, constantly breaking in and interrupting the action. A variety of irregular rhythmic motivesappear throughout as a contrast to the main motive with its strict rhythm. Quotes of nurseryrhyme tunes are hidden throughout the movement as well in various forms. The fifth movement, The Seventh Angel, is a fast and furious tarantella. As the movementflies by a variety of musical ideas emerge and then disappear into the main motive again. The music continues to get faster and faster and finally the movement ends with a furiousprogression from the bottom to top of the piano and then a thunderous unison chord in thelower register.

Guitar - Level 1 - SKU: A0.892557 By Snow Patrol. By Gary Lightbody, Jonathan Quinn, Nathan Connolly, Paul Wilson, and Tom Simpson. Arranged by Ben Garraway. Pop,Rock. Guitar Tab. 2 pages. Music Lesson Downloads #4621327. Published by Music Lesson Downloads (A0.892557). A very simple version of this song that works perfectly along with the original track. Can be played with fingers or a plectrum and is a great introduction to picking. Sounds great played by itself also as it's quite fast and young players sometimes have trouble with the speed.

Small Ensemble Baritone Saxophone,Bass Saxophone,Piano - Level 5 - SKU: A0.533585 Composed by Carson Cooman. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 15 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3029121. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533585). Polpis Dreaming (2002) for contrabass saxophone and piano was commissioned for and isdedicated to Jay C. Easton. The work was inspired by Easton's championing of the more unusual members of the saxophone family, particularly the contrabass with its incredibly powerful and deep sound. This work is recorded on Easton's SoLow CD.The title refers to Polpis, a region of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts that borders Nantucket Harbor with a variety of smaller inlets. This work is one of a variety of pieces connected to the landscape of Nantucket. In the case of this piece, the extra-musical image was one of the incredible depth of the ocean (perhaps parallel to the depth of the contrabass saxophone's sound) slowly being explored/achieved through the means of inlets. The work's basic material comes from the saxophone's opening gesture, which moves upwardfrom the bottom of the instrument. The pitch material and interval content that are transformed throughout the work are presented in that motion. The first section of the work is declamatory, with lyric impulses. The material of the work is unfolded as the sounds of the piano's resonance, combined with the tone of the contrabass saxophone are explored. A faster middle section occurs next in which the harmonic gestures and transformations are always moving towards greater consonance. After the middle section, there is a return to the mood of the opening, although the material of the middle section also appears in transformation.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533553). Summer Solstice (2007) for piano was written for and is dedicated to pianist and composer Jeffrey Jacob.Though there were a number of interconnected inspirations behind the work’s conception, one of theseintentions is as a tribute to American composer Vincent Persichetti (1915–1987). Though there are nospecific quotations from Persichetti’s music, some of the textural and developmental ideas (particularly inthe fast, middle section) owe themselves to his work. The work opens in a free, declamatory manner – announcing its basic pitch material. Spasmodic gesturesintercut the resonant declamation. Amidst the bright ringing, a lyric melody tries to assert itself again andagain. A whirling and dry fast section, however, emerges; the material is put through a series of spinningtransformations, building to a ringing and clangorous climax – bathed in the white heat of the summer sun.The final section is marked “memorial candles†– distant and near candles set out on a field flicker in thesummer heat and ebbing sunlight while low, distant chimes sound the passing of time. The candles slowlyburn out – one by one – in the heat of the dry summer air.Recorded by Donna Amato on Carson Cooman: Piano works ALTARUS AIR-CD-9015

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.775977). Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano (2012) was written for violinist Warren Davidson and pianist Donna Amato, superb musicians for whose advocacy on behalf of my music I am very grateful. The first movement, Canto, is an extended song that develops through a variety of textures. The second movement, Lamento, is a fierce lament in the tradition of an old Irish caoine. The thirdmovement, Variazioni, is structured as two presentations of the theme surrounding five free variations. The theme serves both as the basis of the musical material for each variation as well as the structural template. Each variation also contains material referring back specifically to the previous variation. The opening theme is declamatory. The first variation is fast and limber. It was written as a part of his ViolinFutura commissioning project. The missionof the project seeks to commission pieces connected to the deep historical traditions ofsolo violin literature. The work takes its inspiration thus from these historical works and alsofrom a brief poem by American poet Elizabeth Kirschner. The work begins with slow, melodic music in firm tonality. A fast, dancing section emergesand becomes gradually wilder – abandoning its tonal grounding through chromaticalternation. After this fast music stops, the initial slow music returns to conclude the piece, with darker interjections now inserted into the tonal texture before ending in quiet repose.

Flute Concerto (2006) was commissioned by flutist Judith von Hopf and theKiev Philharmonic and premiered by them under the direction of GuidoLamell. The work is in two movements: Chanson and Fantasy Variations. The first movement, Chanson, is an extended “song†that develops through avariety of textures. The opening song material is centered around G#. In turn, this G# is revealed to be a quasi-dominant of a D centered sonority. (A briefcoda returns to G#, in preparation for the D center of the second movement.)The second movement, Fantasy Variations, is cast as two presentations ofthe theme surrounding five free variations, plus a coda. Mansfield Sunset (2006) for solo Eï¢ clarinet was written for and isdedicated to Dennis Báthory-Kitsz and Stevie Balch on their 10th wedding anniversary.Although the work is intended as a stand-alone concert piece, there are references intertwinedthroughout to the couple’s life and work together. The overall inspiration comes from thelandscape of the state of Vermont and particularly Mt. Mansfield. The opening section is flexible and fantastic – forcefully full of energy and life. A deliberatepassage leads to the next section – fast and fleeting, with a “quicksilver†character that perhapsreflects the horses of the Argentum Fugit farm in Vermont. The final section recalls the mood ofthe opening, but more haltingly – bringing into play a brief quotation (which is shown has beenrelated to the musical material all along). After this aborted recapitulation winds down in asimilar way to the first section, a dramatic coda emerges – leading to the final notes of power, brightness and joy.In terms of musical material, the work is an exploration of the expansion and contraction of atotal chromatic row, settling into lyrical tonally centered gestures.

Throughout his career, Stock has beena tireless and generous advocate on behalf of new music and living composers. This work isdedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significantcontributor to America’s contemporary musical life. The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the seaâ€) –appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When thecomposition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece. As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to changethe work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive. The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparentwith age.†The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from theplainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento. At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out†in subtle ways. The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a“beginning†– as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, afast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.†After driving through a series oftransformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the“beginning†again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (theunderlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement. In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a morestraightforward fashion. After the opening declamatory statements, the following sectionsmove between more free developmental techniques, based on the first movement’stransformations, and “motet†sections – using cantus firmus methods and textures fromRenaissance music. The tone and palate is, however, much darker and more obsessive. There is a brooding ponderousness to these contrapuntal developments. The final motetsection ends in a rageful shout, the plainchant material is presented again in full force, and thepent-up energy dissipates to the close.FluteOboeClarinet in BbBass Clarinet in BbBassoonHorn in F/BbTrumpet in CTrombonePercussion (1 player):tubular bells, vibraphone(Percussionist needs one rosined bow for vibraphone.)PianoViolin IViolin IIViolaCelloContrabass(single strings)This is the score only. The opening movement, Song, decorates a modal melody with arabesque figurations. The second movement, Dance, bounces a syncopated melody back and forth between the players. The third movement, Chorale, is fervent and stately. The fourth movement, Estampie, is fast and energetic. The fifth movement, Prayer, is sad, yet hopeful.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533690). Paradoxes: Sonata for Cello and Piano (1998) was written as a commission frommusicologist and cellist Larry KludgeThe conception and inspiration of this sonata had the idea of paradoxes behind it. Ouruniverse is certainly full of these paradoxes, and they range from the most practical in natureto the most highly philosophical in nature. Each of the movements in this work isparadoxical in a variety of musical ways. The movement titles present the foundation ideasfor each movement, stillness, brevity, and movement; however, those serve as only thebeginning for the paradoxes in the work. The first movement, Paradox of Stillness, openswith a statement of the main melodic theme for the work. The melody and pitches of thattheme are used in a variety of ways throughout. The second section serves as a contrast to theopening after which the opening section is recalled again for the close. The brief secondmovement, Paradox of Brevity, is a very fast moving movement for the cello and the piano.Driving rhythms and odd harmonic twists pervade the movement. The final movement,Paradox of Movement, opens with and sustains a moto perpetuo dance for almost the entiremovement with a break in the middle for a brief cadenza for the solo cello. A brief codabrings the movement to a close

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.775995). Viola Quintet (Unquiet Parables) (2009) was commissioned by the Vienna Soloists and is dedicated to Jack Melby and Jane Thompson. The work is in three movements, each sharing the same basic musical material. The starting point for the music is dissonant cadential figuration centered on Ab (taken from the voice leading of American colonial-era music). Spinning out from this idea, the material extends to incorporate a sonority formed from perfect 5ths one semitone apart. Irregular phrase lengths and cadences are used as the basis of the work’s large-scale structures. The first movement, Recitatives and Chorales, consists of free, recitative-like material for the instruments in solo. These recitatives often erupt into fast spirals. This texture is interrupted periodically by chorale-like ideas presented by the full quintet. The second movement, Serenata, is a song-like with each instrument taking the melody in turn. Some of the recitative-ideas of the first movement re-emerge, as well as a re-articulation of the cadential figuration. The third movement, Ductia, is energetic and driving. A ductia is a Medieval stamping dance resembling the estampie. The driving (yet sometimes off-kilter) character of the dance is interrupted by a recollection of the first movement’s material. The final resolution of the extended cadential figurations occurs at the end, and the work ends exuberantly with a flourish in Ab major.

Violin Solo - SKU: A0.533610 Composed by Carson Cooman. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. 12 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3030921. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533610). Sonata for Solo Violin (2005) was composed for and is dedicated to David Fulmer. It is in twomovements. The first movement, Logos, was inspired by a paradoxical contrast present at Cisco Beach onNantucket Island, Massachusetts, USA. On one side of the sandy beach are the powerfulpounding waves of the unbounded Atlantic ocean. On the other side sits one of Nantucket's mosttranquil freshwater ponds. Within one field of vision exists this contrast. It is a lyrical movement which contrasts slow melodic gestures with very fast running passages. The outer two sections explore the development of a series of melodic cells that are unfolded at the start of the work. The middle section features a long-breathed lyrical melody with lower register decorations and interruptions. The second movement, Synodos, is a journey. The Greek title is built from the Greek words for with [sun] and road/way[hodos] and refers to a fellow traveller on a journey. It is a personal journey -- between performer and violin. It ismystical in conception with two extended slow sections framing a dramatic and jagged one in the center. The musical material and gestures are gradually transformed over time -- as periods of motion are contrasted with periods of extreme stillness and resonant inactivity.A resonant acoustic is preferred for a performance of the work.

Whispers of MortalityFourth Piano Sonata (2005) was commissioned by and is dedicated to pianist Donna Amato. The work is in three movements, each using the exact same musical material. Eachmovement presents a trajectory towards a greater integration of the disparate pieces ofmaterial. The first movement, Mourning at Sunset, presents the basic material in clearly definedblocks. An opening section of forceful, declamatory chords alternates with a more lyricalsection of interlocking lines. The forceful music returns before a slow, desolate section ispresented. This builds to a small climax before dying down again. The opening then returns. The second movement, Beyond Distant Echoes, is slow and ethereal. Sounds of distant gongsalternate with brittle, spasmodic interjections. The third movement, Whispers of Mortality, is inspired by the finale of Frederic Chopin'sPiano Sonata in B-flat minor. It is fast and fleeting and too short. The musical materialhas transformed into pure running roulades of raw notes. The movement evaporates into theuppermost register.

Solar Visions (2004) for woodwind quintet was commissioned by and is dedicated to theArcadian Winds of Boston, Massachusetts, at the specific request of John Paul Aubrey, hornist. Hearing the Arcadian Winds perform contemporary music on numerous occasionswas an inspiration to the writing of this piece. The work is in three movements, each sharing the same basic musical material. The startingpoint for the work's conception is a dissonant cadential figuration from early American music, centered on Ab. Spinning out from this idea, the material extends to incorporate patterns ofperfect 5ths one semitone apart. This sense of cadence is extended in the work to makelarger-scale structures. The first movement, Recitatives and Chorales, consists of free, recitative-like material for theinstruments in solos. These recitatives often erupt into fast spirals. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533709). I. Chaconne: ...a continuum of dreams...II. CadenzaIII. ToccataConcerto for Bass Saxophone and Strings (1999) was commissioned by basssaxophonist Andreas van Zoelen (with generous support from the Broeker Fund forNew Music) and is dedicated with appreciation and admiration to him. Van Zoelen iscommitted to enhancing the very small existing bass saxophone repertoire throughsupporting the creation and performance of new works. The subtitle of the firstmovement (...a continuum of dreams...) could be seen as a sort of subtitle for theentire work that sets the mood and provides unification for the entire piece. The firstmovement is a slow and ethereal chaconne. The strings and the saxophone interact invarious ways throughout this movement in non-traditional form. There are actuallytwo ground bass themes; one is introduced at the beginning with pizzicato stringsbut soon moves to the background (although it is almost always present). The secondis presented near the end of the work and eventually the two are combined. Theinterval of an augmented fourth (tritone) has special use throughout the movementas a variety of themes and motifs are transformed throughout. The second movementis a cadenza for the unaccompanied saxophone. The third movement is a fast andwild toccata. The saxophone plays almost without rest for the entire movement. Amiddle section recalls the theme of augmented fourths from the first movement.Heavy use is made of pizzicato strings. The saxophone part for this movement ishighly virtuosic, exploring the full possibilities and range of the instrument. This is the score and solo part only. The parts are on rental from the publisher.
