Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576653). Very sad poem by Paul Maertens about a child he came to know from his medical practice. The mother was unmarried and ashamed and tried to ignore the child as if it were a reproach to her, the child became autistic and unable to react to others. This setting for alto voice, cello and guitar reflect the mood of the poem in all its sadness. The sound sample is a performance by the composer, with Chris Benson on cello. (The guitar's 6th string is tuned to D - much use is made of 12th and 19th (or 7th if preferred) fret harmonics) The pdf file contains score and parts. An instrumental version of the the music, entitled Promenade d'hiver (viola, cello and guitar), is also available on this site. It is sung in French, but for convenience I am providing an English translation below (not for performance purposes). Ta Maman, p'tit gars, ne te désirait pas.Maintenant tu ouvres les robinets, et vois l'eau couler sans vouloir la saisir.Ta Maman a nié son attente. Ton Papa n'est pas tien, et ta Maman, de honte, t'a caché dans ses seins. Tu naissais sans qu'on te donne la vie. Tu étais dorloté, car il ne fallait pas qu'on t'entende, mon gars. Now you roll your toy car around, without playing or smiling or speaking. Your mummy has gone and you didn't cry. You've left your car somewhere and you arrange the cubes in front of you, always in the same order, simply, without anguish, without happiness. You are not living , little one. Wake up little chap!

'Two Lines' was written at the request of Peter Bowman and Kathryn Bennets for a piece to celebrate 20 years of their performing together. It is a response to Bach's Two-part Inventions and, like the Bach, is suitable for concert performance or as part of a programme of two-part inventions. The music reflects and amplifies my own subjective responses to the artworks.The movements are organised in pairs, circling out from a still centre – No Woman, No Cry. The title for this centrepiece comes from Chris Ofili’s moving portrait of Doreen Lawrence, the mother of a teenager murdered in an unprovoked racist attack. As well as this specific reference, the artist intended the painting to be read as a universal portrayal of melancholy, solace, and grief. The two segments flanking No Woman, No Cry complete the central triptych. Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks explores loneliness and isolation, while Grayson Perry’s #Lamentation is a meditation on remembrance and the transience of life. In contrast to the rest of Wynwood Walls, the music here is dark and introspective.I want my time with you is a giant neon sign designed by Tracey Emin for St. Pancras Station, London. Selfie with Sunflowers is an essay written by Julian Barnes about our over-familiarisation with Van Gogh’s iconic sunflower paintings. The music is sentimental, bordering on schmaltz and kitsch. Sunflower Seeds and Infinity Room are a pair of moto perpetuo scherzos inspired by the minimalist installations of Ai Weiwei and Yayoi Kusama respectively. The opening section, Bathers at Asnières, suggests Seurat’s iconic painting, while the finale, Seurat’s Bathers, evokes Howard Hodgkin’s reworking of the Seurat using a blaze of vivid colours.The title of the quintet is borrowed from the Wynwood art district of Miami – an area characterised by the hundreds of colourful street murals which decorate the walls of old warehouses in the neighbourhood. In performance, the artworks can be projected onto a screen behind the ensemble.Wynwood Walls s'appuient sur 9 œuvres d'art dont les titres prêtent leurs noms aux 9 sections connectées du quintette. La collection ANACROUSE offre aux pianistes novices et confirmes un large choix d’œuvres classiques, allant de la Renaissance à l’epoque moderne.<br><br>Proposer tout à la fois des « incontournables » du repertoire classique et des pièces de compositeurs parfois oublies, toutes d’une valeur pedagogique indeniable, tels sont les objectifs que nous nous sommes fixes. Chaque pièce, vendue à l’unite, a fait l’objet d’un travail editorial attentif, tant sur le plan de l’etablissement du texte musical que de sa gravure, afin de garantir aux musiciens les conditions indispensables aux plaisirs tires du commerce frequent de ces œuvres.<br><br>Les partitions sont proposees sous la forme d’ouvrages traditionnels (feuillets papier), et disponibles egalement par telechargement.<br><br><br><br>Jean Sebastien Bach a ecrit 15 Inventions à deux voix (BWV 772-786) et 15 Inventions à trois voix (BWV 787-801) qu'il a nommees Sinfonias. Il les publie en 1723 à Cöthen. Ce sont des ouvrages didactiques. Avec ces trente inventions Bach vise surtout à instruire et à mettre en place une methode pour les enfants. Il exprime sa pensee en preface dans un des manuscrits autographes des Inventions : « Methode sincère destinee aux amateurs, aux apprentis pour leur apprendre à jouer correctement à deux parties, à proceder ulterieurement juste et bien avec deux ou trois parties obligees, à avoir de bonnes inventions, acquerir une manière chantante de jouer, ainsi qu'un avant goût de la composition. » Ainsi les morceaux sont groupes suivant l'ordre des demi-tons de la gamme et non pas selon la complication croissante des tonalites. Chaque invention a un seul motif thematique. Ce motif peut être agrandi en thème et par la suite, mene en contrepoint avec d'autres petits motifs et la recherche d'un equilibre rigoureux dans chaque invention est une grande difficulte qui peut depasser la comprehension d'un pianiste novice. Bach intègre dans ces morceaux toute une panoplie de procedes techniques comme le canon, le contrepoint, la complexite de la composition necessitant l'utilisation de la pedale harmonique et la façon d'ornementer un motif thematique. On peut entrevoir dans ces Inventions une manière de synthetiser sa methode de travail et une initiation à l'ecriture musicale. Constitue d'une mesure binaire à quatre temps, le thème initial de l'Invention n°1 est presente d'abord à la main droite et se conclut par une reponse immediate à la main gauche. Puis les deux mains contribuent à son enrichissement en se developpant jusqu'à sa reexposition à la neuvième mesure où il se revèle à nouveau dans son inverse sur le ton de la dominante. Compose de vingt-deux mesures, ce thème et son inverse obnubilent toute cette première invention et expriment de manière chantante des pensees delicates.
