String Quartet String Quartet,Viola - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1004728 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Adrian Gagiu. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary. Score and parts. 205 pages. Adrian Gagiu #6365523. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1004728). This composition is a premiere, speculative, yet as faithful as possible embodiment of all of Beethoven’s sketches for his String Quintet in C major, Hess 41 (WoO 62), as they have been left by the composer. The usefulness and integrity of more or less hypothetical completions of sketches by great composers remains from case to case controversial. Due to the paucity of the sketches for the aim of attempting a true reconstruction, the present composition in no way falls within such category. It is obviously quite different from what Beethoven himself would have produced if he had lived more, also due to the fact that he usually transformed his preliminary sketches substantially during the compositional process. However, there are some of his frequent, subtle thematic relationships between the sketches for the Quintet movements, and probably some features in the sketches would have been kept in the completed composition. The four-movement design hypothesized by Martin Staehelin and others, as well as other retrospective or relaxed features in the sketches may be a result of a still early stage of the compositional process, or perhaps an indicator of a fourth, neoclassical creative period, together with Op. 135 and the new Finale for Op. 130.To generate a continuity draft of the Quintet, all of Beethoven’s sketches for it were used, with the addition of several ones from the same context within the respective sketchbook and which could be related to the identified Quintet sketches: some sketches are clearly labeled as being for the Quintet, while others are thematically related or written down close to them. With the possible exception of bars 75-94 and 136-155 in movement II (which are variations on the theme) and bars 140-145 in movement IV (which fill in the blank bars in the sketch with a progression based on it), virtually every bar of this composition includes the notes from the sketches in at least one of the instruments. Some of those notes were subject to transpositions and adaptations to fit the formal design, and to editorial choices for the unclear pitches and duration in the sketches. This publication includes the score, parts and continuity draft, the latter being marked with the sources in the sketches for each passage.Total duration: 33 minutes. The mp3 audio clip is the 3rd movement. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN.

Organ - Level 3 - SKU: A0.534671 Composed by Claude Debussy/Robert Orledge. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score. 5 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #5775633. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534671). Noes by Robert Orledge: Debussy planned to compose seven pieces of incidental music for André Antoine’s production of Shakespeare’s King Lear (Le Roi Lear) in 1904 at the time of his elopement to Jersey with Emma Bardac. However, he never completed the project due to Antoine’s frequent postponements and unwillingness to provide the ‘30 musicians’ Debussy required to avoid ‘a feeble little sound like fleas rubbing their legs together!’ On the verso of the Fanfare manuscript from Debussy’s sketches, I discovered the start of an extremely moving little piece in a modal D minor, which could only be for ‘La Mort de Cordélia’ in Act 5, scene 3. I thought this would be best suited to a binary movement in which most of the first half, the striking chromatic introduction and the elegiac theme are all by Debussy. This pencil sketch turned up in 2000 in thecollection of Mrs Jayne Ericourt (wife of the pianist Daniel Ericourt) in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA.

Chamber Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1415801 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Adrian Gagiu. Classical. 190 pages. Adrian Gagiu #997496. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1415801). Score and parts of a premiere realization of some of Beethoven's sketches for the first movement of another Symphony in C major before the First, dubbed 'No. 0' or Unv. 2 by some: 1. 'Overture' (Andante con moto - Allegro con brio), 2. Tempo di menuetto. Useful for people interested in Beethoven's sketches and for students of the Classical style. In 1794-1796, Beethoven made extensive concept sketches mostly for the first movement of this abortive symphony. The material is abundant and sometimes contradictory, as usual with his preliminary work, and he recycled later from this one only the main theme of the Finale of the completed Symphony No. 1. For this speculative realization, suggested by Mr. Armando Orlandi at the Centro Ricerche Musicali and dedicated to them, only the more promising sketches were utilized, and the slow introduction was assembled from the ones in cut time, while those in triple time make up now a Minuet. Virtually every bar of music here includes the sketches, also in the elaboration and coda of the 'overture', only with a few transpositions needed for assembling the sonata form and for the repeats in the Minuet. Obviously, Beethoven would have done it much differently, had he decided to continue working on this symphony, and the question remains regarding the utility of recycling material abandoned by some classical composer. However, this gives one an approximate idea of one of the many possibilities implied by the preliminary sketches for his Symphony 'No. 0'. Total duration 15 minutes. The mp3 audio clip is the first movement. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN.

Full Orchestra - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1004734 Composed by Adrian Gagiu. 20th Century,Classical. Score and parts. 524 pages. Adrian Gagiu #6631587. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1004734). Fourth Symphony in E flat major Homage to Beethoven (2003, revised 2021), a Neo-Classical symphony based on Beethoven's sketches for his Tenth Symphony, like a speculative reconstruction. In 1822-1827, the fascinating Tenth Symphony (Biamonti 838) was one of Beethoven’s relatively advanced projects, but still it was at the beginning of its elaboration. The material is not quite abundant, and many secondary features in the concept sketches could have been modified, according to his working habits, should he have lived a few years more. For a true reconstruction, the sketches are too scarce, but they are also too good to be left aside and very stimulating for a composer, especially for one whose formation is indebted to Beethoven and who is willing to pay him homage. I have chosen a Neo-Classical idiom, an approach analogous to Stravinsky’s The Fairy’s Kiss (after Tchaikovsky). For such a work, the thorough study of fundamental articles on Beethoven’s projects and sketches (by Barry Cooper, Sieghard Brandenburg, Robert Winter, Martin Staehelin, Nicholas Cook, and Lewis Lockwood) was a necessity. Then, in 2021, the symphony was heavily revised, mainly to make it terser and truer to the sketches and to Classical practices For this symphony, all the thematic material is Beethoven’s, and also the general outline, as much as the latter could be inferred from his sketches. In its revised version, I made use only of the sketches clearly identifiable as intended for the Tenth Symphony and dating from 1822 and later years (most of the themes of its corresponding movements), but also of a few other sketches, most of them contemporary or relatable, unused or intended for other compositions: in the continuation to the second subject group in the first movement, in the second strains of the Presto and of its Trio, and in the transitions and the episodes in the Finale. The symphony has 4 movements and is scored for a normal concert orchestra, including 3 trombones. The revised version makes use also of a contrabassoon, to support the double basses and suggesting a stronger presence of the winds like in the larger scale concerts in the Classical era (usually with doubled winds).Total duration: 34 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The mp3 audio clip is a recording of the first movement (Andante-Allegro-Andante).

This arrangement of Elgar's, Pomp and Circumstance March, No. 1, a perennial favorite for graduation ceremonies, is here abridged for use as a postlude, recital encore, etc. Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Op. 39, are a series of five marches for orchestra composed by Sir Edward Elgar. The first four were published between 1901 and 1907, when Elgar was in his forties; the fifth was published in 1930, a few years before his death; and a sixth, compiled posthumously from sketches, was published in 1956 and in 2005–2006. They include some of Elgar's best-known compositions.

Chamber Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1038395 Composed by Adrian Gagiu. Classical. 451 pages. Adrian Gagiu #643336. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1038395). Throughout his career, Beethoven made dozens of concept sketches for many movements of symphonies, besides those for the completed nine compositions of that genre. In the period 1812-1816, mainly during the composition of the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, there were three recurring such projected works in his sketchbooks, namely in D minor, E minor and E flat major respectively, and remarkably with sketches for more than one of their movements. The present symphony in late Classical style is based on those projects, making use of all their themes in a „combined†symphony in D minor and thus with peculiar tonal relationships. The incentive for this new work in the Classical idiom was in the quality and potential of some of the sketches, especially the one included now in the main theme of the slow movement. Some of the sketched material was subject to transpositions and adaptations to fit the formal outlook, and to editorial choices for the unclear pitches and durations. This publication includes the score and parts. The sketchbook sources for each passage are mentioned at the bottom of the score. Total duration: 36 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The mp3 recording is the third, slow movement.

Large Ensemble - Level 1 - SKU: A0.1129904 Composed by Wajdi Abou Diab. Arranged by Wajdi Abou Diab. Children,Classical,Folk,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Score and parts. 215 pages. W. Abou Diab #730313. Published by W. Abou Diab (A0.1129904). This collection of four short concert pieces for beginners is intended to introduce the new musicians, as well as the audience, to the world of Arabic music in a fun and enjoyable way, and is designed to make the ensemble practice easy and productive. Every piece introduces a scene from Arabic folklore, inviting the little musicians to discover the beauty of Arabic traditions and cultures. In some pieces, the musicians will be asked to perform some simple body percussion, and say some Arabic words, which will add some magic to the music! The first piece titled Dabkeh is a traditional Levantine dance that is still performed at weddings and public events in Arabic countries, in which the dancers hold their hands together and form a circle showing a scene of solidarity and unity. It is a high-energy dance that demands a great amount of physical effort and is usually performed by both men and women. The second piece takes us to a very special period for Arab people, called Ramadan. For a complete month, people enjoy gathering for the Iftar when the sun sets, after long fasting, then attending public events, and organizing cultural gatherings. The third piece is titled Raqsa, which means simply A Dance. The Arabic dance, mainly performed by a female dancer, is full of energy and beauty. Usually accompanied by hand clapping and percussion instruments, and sometimes singing too. The fourth piece takes us to the traditional Arabic wedding ceremonies, which sometimes continue for more than 5 consecutive days. At an Arabic traditional wedding, all the village gathers in the bride's or groom's home, participating in all the details of the preparations for the wedding, bringing food and gifts, and celebrating joyfully with music, songs, and dances.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533567). I. CapriceII. Folk ArabesquesIII. MarchIV. Aria and InterludesV. Hootenanny at the Gates of HeavenSonata in memoriam Daniel Pinkham (2007) for flute was written for and is dedicated to flutist FenwickSmith. The work was written in memory of American composer Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) – a composerwhose music, advocacy, and personal support meant a great deal to me over the years I knew him.Throughout his distinguished career as a composer, keyboard performer (on harpsichord and organ),teacher, and conductor, Dan Pinkham served as an inspiration for countless American composers andmusicians.I had planned to write a solo flute sonata for a few years and made many sketches towards such a work. Inearly 2007, reflecting on Dan’s passing in December 2006, I threw out everything I already had and begananew, conceiving the work both as a tribute to Dan and a piece for his close friend and frequentcollaborator Fenwick Smith. The five movements of the work each explore ongoing transformation of their opening materials. Thoughthere are elegiac moments in the work, the tone throughout is zestfully celebratory, with touches of humor, representing Pinkham’s irrepressible and memorable wit.The first movement, Caprice, flies through a series of arpeggio figurations in changing modes (often adifferent mode “going up†from “coming downâ€).The second movement, Folk Arabesques, is based on a Kentucky folk ballad, “John Riley.†The unusual leapsin the original melody and its modal shifts are explored in the surrounding commentaries, which takecombine bits of the folk ballad with arabesque figurations. The third movement, March, leaps through the total chromatic spectrum. Though the march is a form oftenignored by American composers, Pinkham often employed such sections and rhythms in his own music. The fourth movement, Aria and Interludes, uses a common Pinkham form—where the basic musicaldialogue (in this case a straightforward ‘aria’ melody in G minor) is interrupted by “interludes†ofcontrasting nature. In the case of this movement, it is gradually revealed that the interludes are alteredversions of the aria material. The fifth and final movement, Hootenanny at the Gates of Heaven, is a joyous romp, combining together boththe chromatic/modal shifts of the earlier movements with pentatonic figurations and melodies in the spiritof American folk fiddling.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1362819 Composed by Robert Schumann. Arranged by Robert Coulter. 19th Century,Romantic Period. 38 pages. Gordon Cherry #947199. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1362819). Robert Schumann, Four Sketches, Op. 58 were composed for the pedal-board piano in 1845. He and his wife Clara rented a pedal-board piano, which is an upright grand piano with an organ-like pedal-board played by the performer's feet primarily for the bass line. Thus, organ works could be practiced on this now mostly extinct instrument. He and Clara spent many hours practicing the revered organ works of Bach on this instrument.Robert Coulter has marvelously arranged these little-known works for Brass Quintet, suitable for advanced performers. Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in C, Horn, Trombone and Tuba. The Four Sketches are about 14 minutes in length.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1357534 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Adrian Gagiu. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Romantic Period. Score. 3 pages. Adrian Gagiu #942081. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1357534). A piece in C minor for fortepiano, entirely based on five sketches by Beethoven: Biam. 349b (1802-1803), Biam. 280 (c. 1800), Biam. 349a (1802-1803), Biam. 467 (1808), and Biam. 472 (1808). Its interest lies in the combination and adjustment of the respective fragments, to result in a fluent piece in late Classical style. The sketches were expanded to exploit a bit their passing ideas (the double bars in the score indicate the end of the original material). A mysterious introduction in C minor (Largo, Biam. 349b) is continued by modulations reminding of the Introduzione to the Finale of Beethoven’s Op. 53 and linking it to the vivacious central section, with triplets (first, Allegro assai, in B major as a possible reading of Biam. 280, which was originally written down without a key signature). This is continued by a section in A major (Biam. 349a) and then in D minor, in triple time (Biam. 467). After a sudden stop, the mysterious introduction in C minor returns abbreviated, ending discretely in C major. Composed for the contest at the Centro Ricerche Musicali (C.R.M.) LVBEETHOVEN Italy. Duration 2 min. 20 sec. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The mp3 sample is a recording made on a Graf fortepiano sampled by Modartt's Pianoteq.

In 1797-1798, Beethoven sketched a piano sonata in E flat major which remained unfinished, yet its simple, Haydnesque Finale is the most elaborate movement. For this world premiere realization (suggested by Armando Orlandi at the Centro Ricerche Musicali www.lvbeethoven.it and dedicated to them), only completion of harmony was needed, as well as a few editorial choices to delete some unneeded asymetry and to repeat the codetta of the theme in the end with a different, more stable harmonization. Useful for people interested in studying Beethoven's sketches and the evolution of his style, as well as for intermediate piano students. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The mp3 recording was made on a Walter fortepiano (1790). Total duration 6 min.

Published by Johnathan Couch (A0.954534). One of the most unique works of Johnathan Couch's Opus 3, Animal Sketches, Volume I combines musical depictions of four diverse organisms into one entertaining program piece for piano quintet.1.) Blue Whale - Hear the yearning song of the earth's largest animal, portrayed beautifully by the cello, as the upper strings and piano provide a soft, leisurely, ocean-like background.2.) Penguins - Everyone loves penguins. This cute and cheerful movement captures the playful fun side of penguins which we all know and love. Beginning with a good-natured swing and transitioning into a marshal little march, audiences will go crazy for this happy little piece. 3.) Venus Fly Trap (and an Unfortunate Insect) - The title says it all! With Violin I representing the doomed insect, the rest of the instruments take on the role of Venus Fly Trap, creating a calm, peaceful atmosphere which lures the bug into the plants life-ending jaws. The final seconds of this movement are a climactic escalation of harmony and rhythm which depict the last fleeting moments of the insect's life as the Venus Fly Trap consumes it.4.) Spiders - Not just one spider: lots of them! The music of this movement (composed in a somewhat-classical style) is sure to leave the audience with the sensation of thousands of little spiders crawling all over! This is a great movement, using lots of chromatic themes and spider-sounding trills.

The piano scores used for the original sheet music of these folk songs, hymns, and spirituals of the 1800’s were purposely made simple in order to sell as many copies as possible. The idea being that if someone in every family could read the most basic piano score, then the rest of the family could gather around the piano (usually an inexpensive upright) and sing along in the days before records, cassette tapes, CD’s, Radio, Television, iPods, YouTube etc. Nowadays, the few people who can sight-read at the piano are more musically literate, often being able to read and play classical compositions by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They, therefore, deserve more interesting and rewarding arrangements of these wonderful musical treasures of the 1800’s. Furthermore, since these arrangements for piano and voice can also be played as piano solos, the piano scores are designed to be of enjoyable musical interest on their own; that is, orchestrated for the piano as if they were sketches for an ensemble of instruments. These arrangements can also be considered theatrical improvisations on the original sheet music. Following the best improvisational guidelines, they are based on 1) the implications of the title; 2) the meaning and words of the lyrics; 3) the melody; & 4) the harmonic pattern. For example: Oh, Susanna! is obviously a humorous nonsense song and is therefore arranged to sound carefree, jaunty, and joyful. Also, since the singer refers to my banjo on my knee, the piano arrangement imitates the sound of a banjo as it is played for singing and dancing, strumming its rhythmic way through the simple harmonic changes. You can see and hear the music for most of these contemporary arrangements on Sheet Music Plus and some also on YouTube. And if you wish to play and/or sing along alone or with your friends or family, please do so. Happy time travel!!!

The orchestral parts of the Third Symphony (2000, revised 2023), an ambitious, modernist/neoclassical composition for orchestra and chorus with four vocal soloists. It may represent a search for harmony within and/or without and is a huge, subtle variations form on a theme that appears clearly and in full only in the Finale. The chromatic, first movement (Andante maestoso) begins mysteriously with A's in the unaccompanied violins, like a tuning or a seed of what is to come. These A's are adorned with oscillations which gradually become wider leaps until they reach the fifth (as in the beginning of the future full theme), and the other instruments join gradually. The mood is dark, tragic, pensive, and somehow abstract, as the music wanders in an almost improvisatory manner through chromatic modes and goes crescendo-decrescendo back again to the bare, cryptic A's.The energetic second movement (Allegro) is an enormous scherzo toying with the second melodic cell of the full theme, a descending tetrachord. This vital, Dionysian frenzy (in strong contrast to the Apollonian, severe contemplation in the first movement) leads only to its exhaustion and to the disorientated, slow Trio: first, an almost atonal tenor monologue accompanied by harp (on verses from Dante's Purgatory), then a quotation from Beethoven's sketches for a planned overture on the B-A-C-H motif, followed by a fugal section on the same archetypal motif and again a tenor monologue (on verses from Eminescu's Satire No. 4), this time with organ accompaniment and more and more tortured until the choral exclamations and the final cymbal clash. The search seemed in vain, so the rhythmic fury of the scherzo returns, but in mirror, as minor modes replaced the major ones on the same material. The Finale (Larghetto-Allegro-Larghetto) was inspired by the last scene in Goethe's Faust, part 2. After a cryptic variation for choir a cappella, the full theme appears at last in the orchestra, setting a lyric, appeased mood and more diatonic harmonies, while it reconciles the introspection of the first movement and the emotional and vital aspects of the second, although occasional attempts are made to escape, striving more and more towards the ending (with four vocal soloists and chorus). The parenthetic structure of the finale is a holographic reflection of the general form of the whole symphony, alternating gentle, contemplative episodes with exuberant or majestic fugatos. Towards the ending, ecstatic, big, complex quartal chords suggest the limits of perception and language (on the final stanzas from Dante's Paradise), until the sonority becomes again more and more rarefied and the journey returns to its starting point from the first movement: the 'tuning' A's in the violins.Total duration: 54 min. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q16996). 'Esquisses Persanes' (Persian Sketches) consists of the two movements 'Niya Yesh' (gnosis) and 'Raqs' (dance) which are based completely on the Persian scale C, D flat, E, F, G flat, A flat, B and their twelve transposition possibilities. The two-part melisma in 'Niya Yesh' symbolizes the revelation of the divine consciousness within the personal consciousness. 'Raqs' is a merry toccata in rondo form, with an embellished episode (moderato), which has been inspired by the spiritual 'Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen'.

Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1464007 Composed by Juliette Marie Olga (Lili) Boulanger. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Classical,Multicultural,Religious,Romantic Period,World. 42 pages. John Ivor Holland #1042718. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1464007). Marie-Juliette Olga Lili Boulanger (21 August 1893 – 15 March 1918) was a French composer; her older sister was the noted composer and composition teacher Nadia Boulanger. As a child prodigy born in Paris, Boulanger's talent was apparent at a very young age; at the age of two, she was already singing melodies by ear. Her parents, both of whom were musicians, encouraged their daughter's musical education. In 1912, Boulanger competed in the Prix de Rome but during her performance she collapsed from illness. She returned in 1913 at the age of 19 to win the composition prize for her cantata 'Faust et Hélène', becoming the first woman to win the prize. Boulanger grew up in a time of musical transition and her music fits easily into what was becoming defined as a post-Romantic style. She finished this 'Pie Jesu' (1918) towards the end of her life, but the first of Lili Boulanger's sketches for the Pie Jesu are to be found in a composition book she used between 1909 and 1913. Scholars such as biographer Léonie Rosenstiel and Olivia Mattis speculate that Boulanger intended to write a complete Requiem Mass but did not live to complete it. This arrangement has been created from the original solo voice, string quartet, harp and organ for modern concert band as part of an ongoing project to bring more works by women into the worldwide repertoire.

Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.596552). Ölflecke auf dem Wasser ( Oil spots on the water )This is my second Wind Quintet. The first one (Strange preludes and double canon) was written in 1992, this one in 2003 and there are numerous sketches (even complete movements) for a third one.The title Oil spots on the water doesn't have much with ecological issues, but rather with those abstract, colourful, poly-semantic shapes of small oil spots on asphalt, especially when it rains. The Wind Quintet Ölflecke auf dem Wasser was selected in 2003 in a shortlist of 31 among 270 compositions for the project Neue Kammermusik für Musikschulen (New chamber music for music schools) by the Verband deutscher Musikschulen (Association of German Schools of Music) in Bonn, Germany. In October 2004 this piece, together with two other pieces by the same composer, received first prize at the Bremer Komponistenwettweberb organised by the Council of the Music (Landsmusikrat) in Bremen, Germany.Ölflecke auf dem Wasser was first performed on 10th July 2004 at the Castle Sonderhausen in Germany by the Wind Quintet of the Music School Carl Schroeder of Sonderhausen: Eva-Maria Albrecht (flute), Malte Schneegaß (oboe), Antje Eckstein (clarinet) Julia Wallis (bassoon), Manuela Hirsch (horn), Stephan Uhl (conductor); in the cycle Neue Musik in alten Residenzen (New Music in old residencies) of the Council of the Music Thüringen. After the premiere, Stephan Uhl published an article about the piece: Juan MarÃa Solares 'Ölflecke auf dem Wasser' (2003) für Bläserquintett. Anregungen zur Praxisarbeit zwischen Interpretation und Improvisation (Oil spots on the water (2003) by Juan MarÃa Solare: Ideas about rehearsal practice between performance and improvisation). This article was published in November 2004 in the book Ensembleleitung Neue Kammermusik (Dokumentation und Arbeitshilfe des Modellprojekts), edited by the VdM (Verband deutscher Musikschulen - Association of German Music Schools), Bonn, ISBN 3-925574-59-X, pages 82-86.In March 2005 Oil spots on the water was chosen in the shortlist at the Piece of the Year Competition organised by Alan Taylor and the London Chamber Group. In this context it was performed on 10th July 2005 at a venue unknown to the composer.

Fiddle - Beginning - SKU: M0.21123BCDEB Composed by Drew Beisswenger. Bluegrass. Fiddle Tunes. E-book and online audio. Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music #21123BCDEB. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music (M0.21123BCDEB). ISBN 9781610653190. 8.75x11.75 inches. This book, which includes 308 tune transcriptions, is organized around individual fiddlers who typically combine Appalachian-style fiddling with rags, pop standards, Midwest-style fiddling and sometimes a touch of Western swing to create a style often identifiable as Ozarks. Thirty Ozarks fiddlers and their lives are highlighted with biographical sketches, photographs, and tune histories. Another 50 great Ozarks fiddlers are presented in a similar manner but with less detail. The book and accompanying online audio (with 37 tunes, many recorded in the field) emphasize the older fiddling traditions connected to the square dances and community events more than those connected to bluegrass music and modern contest fiddling. Some of the tunes in the collection are old standbys such as Bile Them Cabbage while others such as Finley Creek Blues are unique to the region. The book is the result of years of work by two respected researchers. Gordon McCann won the prestigious Missouri Arts Award in 2002 for his decades of work documenting, studying, and accompanying Ozarks fiddle music. Drew Beisswenger, a music librarian at Missouri State University with a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, has published three other works about fiddle music and is known for his strong transcription and analysis skills. Includes access to online audiio.
