Leonardo Leo - Dixit Dominus a 2 cori, 1741, Secondo movimento Transcribed by Guido Menestrina Celebre compositore e capostipite della bella scuola napoletana del XVIII secolo, nacque a San Vito degli Schiavoni, presso Brindisi, in provincia di Terra d'Otranto. De Leo avrebbe compiuto i suoi studi musicali al conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini, sotto la direzione di Nicola Fago, soprannominato il tarentino[1]. Girolamo Chigi, maestro di Cappella di San Giovanni in Laterano, allievo e amico di Pitoni, dice che de Leo si recò a Roma e che vi studiò il contrappunto sotto la guida di questo sapiente maestro. Di ritorno a Napoli, de Leo ottenne il posto di secondo maestro al conservatorio della Pietà . Nel 1716 fu nominato organista della cappella reale e l'anno successivo venne designato per occupare il posto di maestro di cappella della chiesa di Santa Maria della Solitaria, per la quale scrisse molta musica. Nel 1719 fece rappresentare la Sofonisba, sua prima opera seria che fu ben accolta e in cui il carattere espressivo del suo talento si faceva già notare. I biografi che sostengono abbia insegnato al conservatorio di Loreto s'ingannano, fu infatti prima al conservatorio della Pietà , poi a quello di Sant'Onofrio, dove ebbe per allievi alcuni dei compositori più illustri del XVIII secolo, come Jommelli e Piccinni. Non morì nel 1743, come dice lo stesso Piccinni, in una breve notizia biografica sul suo maestro, né nel 1742 come afferma Burney, ma nel 1744. Il marchese di Villarosa, riferisce che de Leo sarebbe stato colpito da apoplessia, mentre era intento a scrivere un'aria buffa de La finta frascatana che comincia con queste parole: Voi par che gite/di palo in frasca. Lo si trovò con la testa appoggiata sul suo clavicembalo e si credette, in un primo momento che dormisse, ma in realtà aveva già cessato di vivere. Leo era di taglia media, colorito bruno, occhio vivo e temperamento ardente. Sebbene fosse abitualmente piuttosto serioso, non mancava di urbanità e gentilezza. Infaticabile nella professione, passava spesso la maggior parte delle notti a comporre e si trovava sempre in vena- Amava le sue opere, ma rendeva giustizia al merito dei suoi rivali quando occorreva. Morì rimpianto da tutti, lasciando a lungo il ricordo di sé e delle sue opere, nonché della scuola di cui fu uno dei fondatori. Considerazioni sull'artista Leo condivide col suo predecessore Alessandro Scarlatti e i contemporanei Nicola Porpora, Francesco Durante e Francesco Feo, la gloria di aver fondato la scuola di Napoli, da cui sono usciti, durante tutto un secolo, una moltitudine di compositori drammatici di prim'ordine. Egli stesso fu non soltanto un grande professore, ma un artista dei più dotati. La sua musica da chiesa non ha meno maestà di quella di Durante, tocca il cuore e fa nascere degli slanci di tenera devozione. Il suo Miserere a due cori è una composizione tanto notevole per l'elevatezza dei sentimenti che l'hanno dettata, quanto per la purezza di stile in cui si riconoscono le tracce della scuola cantoria romana in cui studiò. Nella sua musica sacra nello stile accompagnato e concertato, de Leo conserva la semplicità e si fa ammirare per la bellezza dell'espressione, come l'Ave Maris Stella per voce di soprano e orchestra o il Credo a quattro. Egualmente notevole nel genere teatrale, de Leo è sempre nobile, spesso patetico e appassionato ed è con questi mezzi, molto semplici, che perviene a grandi effetti. De Leo avrebbe compiuto i suoi studi musicali al conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini, sotto la direzione di Nicola Fago, soprannominato il tarentino[1]. Girolamo Chigi, maestro di Cappella di San Giovanni in Laterano, allievo e amico di Pitoni, dice che de Leo si recò a Roma e che vi studiò il contrappunto sotto la guida di questo sapiente maestro. To play it is to be taken inside a sound world greater than the instrument itself. In other words, it seems to demand orchestration. Whether the fanfare call of Puckâ??s Dance, the sotto voce flurries evoking The Wind Over The Plains, or the deepest and highest reaches of the musical spectrum explored in the under-water world of The Sunken Cathedral, Debussyâ??s music seems to drop hints at obvious orchestral manoeuvres. His great skill, of course, was condensing these musical ideas to the piano. But the fruit is there fo the taking, and indeed other orchestrations exist of the complete suite of piano preludes â?? Books I and II. So, why another?This particular suite cherry-picks some of my own favourite movements from the suite, and arranges them in a â??symphonicâ?? structure to present an opening, expository movement (The Wind Over The Plains), a romantic Adagio (The Girl With The Flaxen Hair), a sprightly â??scherzoâ?? (Puckâ??s Dance), concluding with an epic finale (The Sunken Cathedral). The setting for the song in the show is a favorite night spot in which people often have clandestine meetings and the dark interior allows for that, so the song is sung sotto voce for the most part, more whispered, as if everything's a secret. This arrangement maintains that mood with only a few vigorous accents. It is playful and witty and somewhat mischievous. It makes for a good study piece for more advanced intermediate students because of the staccatos all over the keyboard with only isolated pairs of notes played legato for accentuated phrasing. The middle section will help to develop dexterity in rapid finger work. And it's just plain fun to do.

Specifically, Fraser uses a similar structure in Movement 1, starting at Measure 72 marked â??più mosso e con abbandonoâ?, to the notoriously difficult â??colossaleâ? section of Prokofievâ??s â??Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 16â??, Movement 1. The sonataâ??s Movement 3 also follows a structure parallel to Movement 4 of Prokofievâ??s aforementioned piano concerto, employing fiendishly challenging syncopated jumps in both hands. Written in ternary form, Movements 1 and 3 of Fraserâ??s sonata are in C minor; Movement 2 is in E-flat minor, instead of the expected relative or dominant key. It consists of a simple theme that is presented in imitation by each of the four 'voices' first at 2 bar intervals then, in inversion at four bar intervals and then in the original form at one bar intervals. There is a linking fanfare-like passage before the final statement of the original motif with fanfare-like adaptations.The second movement is called Lullaby. The elegant, drifting melody is passed around the four players with a largely chordal accompaniment pattern that needs to be played sotto voce at all times. The tempo is marked Largo, but it is still one-in-a-bar.The third movement is called Hullabaloo-haloo-haloo. While it is based on a 6/8 cantering rhythm, there is a lot of variation in both the accompaniment and the melody. Again, all the lines have a lot of interest, nobody has to play simple um-chucks, and there's even a solo for the 4th horn at the end.I have rearranged the parts as 1/3/2/4 on the advice of a horn player friend of mine. Enjoy.This is a really enjoyable and exciting new addition to the horn quartet repertoire.

Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802578). The Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, also known as the Pastoral Symphony, is a symphony composed by Ludwig vanBeethoven and completed in 1808. One of Beethoven's few works containing explicitly programmatic content (instrumental music that relates a story or portrays a scene), the symphony was first performed in the Theater an der Wien on22 December 1808 in a four-hour concert.The finale, which is in F major, is in 6/8 time. The movement is in sonata rondo form, meaning that the main themeappears in the tonic key at the beginning of the development as well as the exposition and the recapitulation. Like many classical finales, this movement emphasizes a symmetrical eight-bar theme, in this case representing the shepherds' song of thanksgiving.The coda starts quietly and gradually builds to an ecstatic culmination for the full orchestra (minus storm instruments)with the first violins playing very rapid triplet tremolo on a high F. There follows a fervent passage suggestive of prayer, marked by Beethoven pianissimo, sotto voce; most conductors slow the tempo for this passage. After a brief period of afterglow, the work ends with two emphatic F-major chords.Here is an excerpt of this magic music for Violin and Cello that can be used as a short closer or filler, under the appropriate circumstances.

Ominous, tragic, and heroic are all accurate descriptors. Performers should not count the beats metronomically. Rather, each end of phrase should be held and released like a breath: imprecise but with a natural flow. Transposed from A minor down to G minor to suit brass instrumentation The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. This is my arrangement of No.5 Confutatis (From the accursed).It begins with a rhythmic and dynamic sequence of strong contrasts and surprising harmonic turns on tuba and horn the tenors and basses (Trumpets and trombone) burst into a forte vision of the infernal, on a dotted rhythm. The accompaniment then ceases , and trumpet 1 and tbn enter softly and sotto voce, (Voca me cum benedictis ()Call upon me with the blessed) with an arpeggiated accompaniment on horn and trumpet 2. Finally, in the following stanza (Oro supplex et acclinis), there is a striking modulation from G minor to Gb minor. This music suits the brass quintet. Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). It is made up of the following pieces I have arrangements of all of them, for varying types of ensemble * Dies irae * Tuba mirum * Rex tremendae * Recordare * Confutatis * Lacrymosa. I have also arranged Mozarts Motet “Ave Verum Corpus†K618.
