Brass Band Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1220622 Composed by Giovanni Gabrieli. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Instructional,Renaissance. Score and Parts. 45 pages. Jmsgu3 #816951. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1220622). A musical monument: the first composition to employ dynamics Minimum Instrumentation: 4 Trumpets, 2 Alto Trombones, 3 Tenor Trombones, 1 Bass Trombone, and 1 Tuba. Suggested instrumentation: 8 trumpets, 4 Alto Trombones, 6 Tenor Trombones, 2 Bass Trombones, 4 Tubas.InnovationsFirst of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style.Polychoral WorksGabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well.Spatial MusicAbove all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation rather than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in balance.First WorksFinally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it through sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung.HomophonyHence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which he calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

Trombone Quartet Trombone - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1266548 Composed by Solage. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Medieval. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #859221. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1266548). Solage's ballade Le basile de sa propre nature is a significant work in the history of medieval music. Here are some of its historical significances:1. It is one of the twelve surviving works attributed to Solage, a French composer who lived in the late 14th century. Solage's works are known for their complex rhythms, intricate harmonies, and expressive melodies.2. Le basile de sa propre nature is a four-voice ballade that features a text about the mythical creature known as the basilisk. The lyrics describe the basilisk as a monster that kills everything it sees with its deadly venom. The music is characterized by its intricate rhythms and harmonies, which reflect the text's vivid imagery.3. The ballade is preserved in the Chantilly Codex, a manuscript that contains a collection of French secular music from the late 14th century. The Chantilly Codex is one of the most important sources of medieval music, and it provides valuable insights into the musical practices of the time.4. Le basile de sa propre nature is an example of the Ars subtilior style, which was a highly experimental and complex musical style that emerged in the late 14th century. This style was characterized by its use of intricate rhythms, complex harmonies, and unusual notational practices. The Ars subtilior style was highly influential in the development of later musical styles, and it remains an important part of the medieval musical canon.Overall, Solage's ballade Le basile de sa propre nature is a significant work that reflects the complex and experimental musical practices of the late 14th century. Its vivid imagery, intricate rhythms, and complex harmonies make it a valuable contribution to the medieval musical canon.Lyrics:All those he sees he kills suddenly,For his venom is deadly. He is a basilisk by his own nature,And he has no other way of being. He is a monster of great power,And he is feared by all who know him.He is a creature of the earth,And he is a master of death. He is a basilisk by his own nature,And he has no other way of being. All those he sees he kills suddenly,For his venom is deadly. He is a creature of the night,And he is a master of the dark.He is a monster of great might,And he is feared by all who hear his name. He is a basilisk by his own nature,And he has no other way of being. All those he sees he kills suddenly,For his venom is deadly.Solage was a French composer and probably also a poet who lived in the late 14th century. He composed the most pieces in the Chantilly Codex, which is the principal source of music of the ars subtilior, a manneristic compositional school centered on Avignon at the end of the century. Solage is an obscure composer, and aside from what can be deduced from the pieces attributed to him in the Chantilly Codex, nothing else is known about him. There are several interpretations of his name, and it is not clear whether his first name was Jean or Charles. The ars subtilior was a manneristic compositional school centered on Avignon at the end of the 14th century. It was characterized by complex rhythms and pitch, and it was a transitional period between the late medieval and Renaissance periods. Solage was one of the composers who fit into this school, and he composed the most pieces in the Chantilly Codex, which is the principal source of music of the ars subtilior. Stylistically, Solage's works exhibit two distinctly different characters: a relatively simple one usually associated with his great predecessor and elder contemporary Guillaume de Machaut, and a more recherché one, complex in the areas of both pitch and rhythm, characteristic of the ars subtilior.Â

Trombone Duet Trombone - Level 3 - SKU: A0.552414 Composed by Leo Delibes (1836-1891). Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Holiday,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score. 7 pages. Jmsgu3 #6342767. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552414). Duo of the flowers from Lakme, Act I. A popular wedding selection.Leo Delibes (1836-1891) was a French composer of the Romantic period best known for his ballets and operas. He was a child prodigy and began composing music at the age of seven. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he developed a mastery of the symphonic form and wrote several pieces for the orchestra. His works for the stage are among the most popular and beloved of the Romantic era, including the ballets Coppélia and Sylvia, and the opera Lakmé.Delibes was a pioneer in the use of orchestral color and instrumental effects to enhance the dramatic narrative of his works. His works are often praised for their lyricism, graceful melodies, and colorful orchestrations. His music is considered to be a bridge between the grandiose and romantic works of the French composers before him, such as Gounod and Berlioz, and the more intimate and melodic style of composers like Debussy and Ravel.Delibes’ influence can be heard in the works of later composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev, and his music continues to be performed and enjoyed today. His contributions to music history are significant, and his works remain beloved masterpieces of the Romantic era.Léo Delibes' opera Lakmé is an opera in three acts. It was first performed in 1883 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. The libretto was written by Edmond Gondinet and Philippe Gille. The story is set in British-occupied India and tells the story of a young Indian girl, Lakmé, who is in love with a British officer, Gerald. The story follows the couple's romantic journey, as well as the obstacles they face from Lakmé's father and the British military. The opera is best known for its beautiful score, which includes the famous aria The Flower Duet as well as the duet Lakmé! The Bell Song. The opera has been performed in opera houses all over the world and is considered one of Delibes' most popular works. The Duo des Fleurs, composed by French composer Léo Delibes, is a ballet pas de deux from the ballet Lakme, Act I. It is a beloved masterpiece of the Romantic period and is often performed as a standalone piece in many ballet performances. The piece is typically danced by two female ballet dancers and is known for its playful and lighthearted nature. The music consists of a melody that alternates between the two dancers and is often accompanied by a lighthearted waltz. The music has a strong sense of unity and connection between the two dancers, which is enhanced by the use of the same melody. The piece also features a beautiful soaring coda that gives it a sense of grandeur and beauty. The Duo des Fleurs is an exquisite piece of music and an enduring classic of the ballet repertoire.

Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1124725). This easy arrangement for trombone trio was written to be uncomplicated to perform and understand the structure of the piece. It can be freely played by beginning students, because of the ease imposed on the piece; however, this does not prevent it from being played by professionals and music teachers. It is also ideal for academic recitals, student method and ceremonies that are arranged in the same way as the piece contains. The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument.

Jmsgu3 #3516933. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549651). Duration: ca 5:20, Score: 8 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 4 pages. One of Beethoven's finest and most famous works. Program for a recital, church meditation or school program. Bring your best espressivo and plan to rehearse the many subtle dynamic changes. Sonata Pathétique Op. 13 First of all, this is an arrangement of the second movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Pathétique. It seems like Beethoven wrote this piece before becoming troubled by deafness. Published in 1799, it consequently remains one of the most celebrated pieces Beethoven ever wrote. As a result of its popularity, the movement was therefore performed by Karl Haas. Hass recorded it for a popular radio show called: Adventures in Good Music. Beethoven Background Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) was certainly a German pianist. Above all, he was probably one of the greatest composers in history. As a result, he is a pivotal character in the progress between the Classical and Romantic periods. He is certainly one of the most famous and hence important of all composers. Seems like his most familiar and noteworthy works include symphonies 1-9; piano concertos 1-5; and furthermore, the violin concerto. Also, certainly of extreme importance are the noteworthy 32 sonatas for the piano; the string quartets 1-16; the Missa solemnis; and likewise, his only opera, Fidelio. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna for the rest of his life. In his late 20s, it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently, he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies, therefore, belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony, he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano. www.jamesguthrie.com.

Piano,Tenor Trombone - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1204336 Composed by American folk hymn tune. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian,Easter,Folk,Lent,Traditional. Score and part. 8 pages. Con Spirito Music #802815. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1204336). Here's a lovely, lyrical tune that's ideal for use during Holy Week or as a meditative prelude, offertory, or communion selection for trombone (or euphonium, cello) and piano.Saw Ye My Savior? is an early 19th-century American folk hymn with a tune that predates it by perhaps 100 years or more. Both the text and the tune seem to have been freely adapted to the subject of the song (whether secular or sacred) and the singer, which is typical of folk songs and folk hymns handed down from one generation to the next. For example, the text of the hymn, which begins Saw ye my Savior, saw ye my Savior, saw ye my savior and my God? is similar to that of an English folk song, Saw you my father, saw you my mother, saw you my true love John?In the 1858 edition of William Walker's shape-note hymnal, The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion, the source cited for the text and tune is Baptist Harmony (1834), p. 477. However, William Hauser and Benjamin Turner's collection, The Olive Leaf (1878), refers to the tune as a Scotch air; and certainly, the Scotch snap rhythm in measures 3 and 4 of the tune lend credence to that. The website, hymnary.org, cites Saw Ye My Savior? as having been published in 167 hymnals (all prior to 1979 but one). Two similar tunes, CRUCIFIXION (Southern Harmony) and ATONEMENT are associated with the text. Because the subject of the text is Christ's crucifixion (see representative text here), Saw Ye My Savior? has often been used as a choral anthem in Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday worship services. This arrangement of the lovely, flowing tune for trombone (or euphonium, cello) and piano is ideal at any time as a meditative prelude to worship, or as an offertory or communion selection. ©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Will Corbin #1044265. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1465652). This is the catchy calypso song from the spectacular dance scene in Central Park from the 2007 Disney flick Enchanted. If you've never seen it, at least check out that part of it (I think it's on YouTube). It's just fun, and it's a great song. It was nominated (along with two other songs also from Enchanted) for the Oscar for best original song. They all lost to an awful song you've never heard from a movie you've never seen. I think maybe the Academy has developed an allergy to Disney. The playback is a little goofy (there's a return to sign and then a coda), but the chart does track the way it's supposed to.If you need other instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Edward Elgar composed his Variations on an Original Theme for Orchestra ("Enigma"), Op. 36, commonly referred to as the Enigma Variations, in 1898?99. It is a set of fourteen variations on a hidden "theme" that is, in Elgar's words, "not played". It is Elgar's best-known large-scale composition, for both the music itself and the enigma behind it. Nimrod is the 9th variation from this.

Brass Ensemble Trombone - Level 3 - SKU: A0.813751 Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. 20th Century,Contemporary,Sacred,Standards,Wedding. Score and parts. 9 pages. Regis Bookshar #6475555. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813751). O God, Beyond All Praising (Thaxted) (Bb) (Trombone Quintet) - Intermediate - . This marvelous arrangement of O God, Beyond All Praising, a hymn tune based on the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's The Planets, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for church services, especially Weddings and Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. However, if you are looking to perform this selection for concerts or recitals, I would suggest you look for the arrangement of Jupiter (Andante Maestoso from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets), also by Regis Bookshar. These arrangements are suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing these selections as well. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (9 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The Planets, written between 1914 and 1917 by the English composer Gustav Holst, premiered at the Queen's Hall in London, on September 29, 1918 for an invited audience of about 250 people. In the fourth movement, Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Holst portrays Jupiter's supposedly characteristic abundance of life and vitality. Nobility and generosity are allegedly characteristics of those born under Jupiter, and in the slower, middle section marked Andante Maestoso, perhaps the most well-known theme from The Planets (and the theme on which this arrangement is based), Holst provides a broad tune embodying these traits. In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. It did not appear as the hymn tune until 1926, when Holst harmonized this melody, named Thaxted, named after the English village where he had lived for many years. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. It has since been performed at numerous occasions, most notably for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, and also at the funerals of Princess Diana in 1997, Margaret Thatcher in 2013 and Senator John McCain where it was performed at the Washington National Cathedral on September 1, 2018. In addition to being used as the melody for the solemn, patriotic hymn I Vow to Thee, My Country, other settings of this hymn tune also include O God, Beyond All Praising, by Michael Perry in 1982, O Spirit All Embracing by Delores Dufner in 1995 and We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God, a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudemus by Stephen P. Starke in 1999.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to the Trumpet Quintet version and this version for a Trombone Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection. There are Quintets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are added as often as possible. I'm certain that this beautiful arrangement of O God, Beyond All Praising based on the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's The Planets, will continue to ent.

This marvelous arrangement of I Vow to Thee, My Country, a hymn tune based on the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's The Planets, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for church services, especially Weddings and Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. I'm certain that this beautiful arrangement of I Vow to Thee, My Country based on the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's The Planets, will continue to entert.

Trombone - Advanced - Digital Download Composed by Petros Shoujounian. 21st Century. 23 pages. Published by Cherry Classics Music
Petros Shoujounian, an Armenian/Canadian composer has written Twelve Duos for Trombones based on the folksong collection of the Armenian priest Komitas, known as the founder of the Armenian national school of music and one of the pioneers of ethnomusicology. Below are comments from the composer about his inspiration in writing these Twelve Duos for Trombones.
My interest in the collected works of Komitas's ethnographical songs was aroused when I was introduced to Bela Bartok's similar works followed by Alan Hovhaness's huge creative world. Bartok completed his project having at his disposal a large collection of ethnographic music, while Hovhannes studied the wealth of Komitas's music with great interest. It is difficult to say to what extent the Armenian underpinning of Hovhannes's works is nurtured by Komitas's musical world, but his classical interpretation of the Armenian ethnographical music created a huge interest in the listener. Needless to say, there is also Aram Katchaturian's legacy, which at its core has the ardent presence of the Armenian spirit, nurtured by Komitas's very existence.
Komitas has left a collection of about 3,000 cleaned versions of the ethnographic song and dance pieces, of which 1,700 have reaches us, about 400 of which have been activated. I believe that in those beautiful musical fragments reside the power to be revived, once we enrich them with colorful musical instruments and unbounded polyphonic imagination.
This is the motivation behind my own work and these Twelve Duos for Trombones: to make the essence of our ethnographic music accessible through Komitas.
These Twelve Duos are appropriate for advanced performers and may be performed on Alto, Tenor, and Bass Trombones.
