The Duke of Alva's entry into Brussels from The Pacification of Ghent, duration : 2 min music : Peter Benoit arr. : Marc Goris Peter Benoit composed music based on the historical drama with the title 'De Pacificatie van Gent' by Emiel Van Goethem. Because of the combination of drama and music he defined the piece as a lyrical drama. He completed The Pacification of Ghent on 11 July 1876, the world premiere happening on 3 September at the Ghent Municipal Theatre. On 8 November 1576 a treaty was proclaimed from the balcony of the city hall in Ghent between the different regions of the southern and the northern Netherlands. This Pacification of Ghent occurred after the revolt against the Spanish occupation of Philip the Second and was the great ideal of William of Orange: he was striving for unity in the seventeen provinces in the Netherlands as well as for freedom of religion. Furthermore the treaty stipulated that the Spanish troops were to be removed from the Netherlands. Although this treaty was observed for only three years, the Pacification was embellished with a mythical aura in the Flanders of the 19th century. King Philip II sent the Duke of Alva to Brussels on 22 August 1567, at the head of a powerful army. On arrival, Alva replaced Margaret of Parma, the sister of the Spanish king, as head of the civil jurisdiction. He decided that the local nobility was in open rebellion against the king and supported the new Protestant teachings, heresy in his view. A few days later, on 5 September 1567, Alva established the Council of Troubles, popularly known in the Netherlands as the Court of Blood, to prosecute those responsible for the riots of 1566, especially those who were deemed heretics. Alba also targeted the local Catholic nobility, who favoured dialogue and opposed outside intervention. Two of the three heads of the Flemish nobility, the Count of Egmont, a Catholic General for Philip II, who had led the cavalry that defeated the French at the Battle of San Quentin, and Philip de Montmorency, Count of Horn, were arrested. The court sentenced both counts to death. The Major of Antwerpen, Anthony van Stralen, Lord of Merksem and Jan van Casembroot were other famous victims of the bloody repression, along with a large group of other heretics. The condemned persons were executed on 5 June 1568 in the Town Hall Square in Brussels. Alva had little confidence in Flemish justice, which he perceived as sympathetic to the defendants, and witnessed the executions in person.

Rather than selling each PDF seperately (which is a bit overpriced and too much of a hassle), I decided to combine them and offer a great deal! Learn how to compose chord progressions like a pro while having fun and playing!Objective:Teach yourself the seven chords that belong to each type of scale. Rather than bombard you with a thousand guitar chords (which is easy to happen when browsing the internet or playing random songs), I'd rather show how a select few chords are working well together in common contexts. The hope is that you would then be able to see this happening in all 12 keys. What Scales/Modes are being harmonized? C Major (+jazz version) A (natural) minor (+jazz version) A harmonic minor (+jazz version) B Locrian D Dorian E Phyrigian F Lydian G Mixolydian Features: Slowly increases in physical and theoritcal difficulty at the same time. Many music theory books seem abstract and impractical whereas these chord charts show music theory applied to guitar. These chord progressions are a great composition aid. Guitar chord diagrams Traditional notation with letter names on the note heads Roman numerals color coded Modes included. The Beatles and jazz musicians use modal chord progressions to give their music uniqueness. It's almost as if one note is wrong intentionally. Practicality and flow on guitar is emphasized more then music theory conciseness. Letter names are not in a perfect order (as that is sometimes impossible for the guitar to do). Sometimes a more complex chord is opted for because it's actually easier to play physically. Tips: Order = Blue, Yellow, Red, Blue for stereotypical classical style chord progressions. Rock and blues often do more of a chord succession; red going to yellow happens often, even though it is breaking a rule. The professional names for blue, yellow, red: tonic, predominant, dominant respectively. I did not invent this theoretical concept, but I am probably one of the few musician's to color code the categories regularly. The colors explain the situation elegantly; the professional words seem like abstract PhD education, whereas saying blue is relaxing and red is uncomfortable is something a child can understand quickly. One fantastic tip I hardly hear anyone say: it doesn't so much matter that you play the same chord as the other musician in your ensemble (unless you are getting paid to do exactly that). It matters more that you simply play the same color as them. You will have a deeper understanding of how music works if you think like this, and mistakes will no longer be seen as mistakes. What happens when a C Major and A minor chord are played at the same time? Hardly anything! It's just a Am7! Big whoop! It isn't a horrendous sounding mistake. Circle a key on the circle of fifths. Now circle the two keys next to it (-1b, +1#). This leads to six chords that belong diatonically to the first key you circled! Memorizing these will allow you to better predict what composers are about to do, especially if you know ahead of time that the song does not change key. Get away from the echo chamber of common are arugably bad cowboy chords and be able to build your own.

This measure is a good example of how to squeeze in a quick blues note.I like these versions because you can choose between playing the main melody, playing the chords, or trying both simultaneously. If you can eventually playing both simultanously, it can quickly become sophisticated sounding!This version is also nice in that if you strum the more detail-oriented guitar chords, you end up usually playing the melody anyways, which makes this more ideal for strumming with a pick and for practicing vocals.Tips:1. The F# diminshed chord in measure 18 was originally a D7 chord. This seems like a good substitute to make because they contain roughly the same notes but the diminished chord is more original sounding and has better part writing. There is something about D7 chord that I am always swapping out of them when the melody is low. Same concept for the D/F# chord in measure 11. Instead of a famous D chord, the D/F# accents the main melody better, and is more unique sounding.2. It's easy to make mistakes with ties, especially because they also look like slurs. Ties add the to rhythm values together and you don't play the second note, so I normally cross them out with a pencil as they are really only showing sustain.

This version really sprinkles some razzle dazzle on an otherwise straightforward public domain song in G major, though it does not use the exact original melody.1. The original melody is NOT intact, this is ghostwritten. Notes were flatted to give a bluesier sound.  2. The chords are very modern, despite this song being written in the mid 1850s. 3. Grace notes added 4. Background harmonies now have more thought put into part writing, originality, being idiomatic on guitar, and making the melody the forefront. 5. Left hand fingerings added to aid in sight-reading.6. Letter names added to note heads to aid in sight-reading.7. I like versions like this because it could be used for a guitarist who doesn't sing, a guitarist who does sing, or a guitarist in a band. In otherwords, the more band members, the more you are just focusing on background chords, the more you are a one-person band, the more you have to take everything in. Tips:1. I arranged this so that students could see how blues scales work as I drenched this song in more blues than it originally had (Bb - B...F - F#...E minor blues and G major blues respectively.) You'll notice I don't stay on these dissonant blues notes for very long, that's why there's so many grace notes in this song.2. The D9 in measure 6 was originally a D7. Some extensions like this don't really change the scale in use.3. The Ab7 in measure 7 was originally a D7, making the Ab7 a tritone substitution. If you know the key of G major well, that chord should stick out like a sore thumb. 4. The Bb7 in measure 14 was originally a G7. I call these kind of substituitions mediant substitutions as they are similiar to jazz tritone substitions, but at a 3rd instead of a tritone.5. The Cm(maj7) was originally a C major chord. This is a modal borrowing composition technique of borrowing from the parrallel minor, in this case, G minor.

PROGRAM NOTE: Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, has been commissioning works, both new works and modern arrangements of old works, for nine years for an annual Concert of Premieres each May. He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year. Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart). The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old. The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D, two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum. I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas, bass drum, and glockenspiel. As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for young, less experienced players. I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is probably the one which will probably need to be played. Mein Freund!, Eva's aria from Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg. Dramatic sopranos who love this aria no longer need to fear bringing it in for auditions, last-minute performing engagements, or other situations in which the pianist is unlikely to know this aria and may become rattled by the chaotic piano reductions in the currently available vocal scores. Pianists with limited practice time may now enjoy playing this aria comfortably as well. Because vocal line/orchestral doublings are characteristic of Wagner, those have been preserved in this edition. All Accessible Accompaniments, including this one, boast several unique features:1. No reduction ever requires stretches of over an octave, not including bass notes meant to be held or “fudged†with the pedal (though octaves may also contain chord tones within them). This reduces the amount of rearranging that smaller-handed pianists must already do. Obviously, further reworkings are to be expected and pianists should feel free to add to or modify what I’ve provided.2. I’ve included less essential, but potentially desirable additional voices/passages in cue-size noteheads so that pianists can easily see them, but know that they are not necessary in a “sink or swim†accompanying situation. Presenting less essential material in cue-size noteheads also reduces visual clutter on the page.3. It reminds me of the difficulty of Fernando Sor or Matteo Carcassi etudes, so it's great to use this to fine tune technical aspects of your playing. 1. Arranged for guitar. 2. Guitar tablature added. 3. Slurs/slides/stacatto added. 4. Fingerings added. 5. Chord nomenclature added. (classical music doesn't normal have these. They tend to never summarize the notes perfectly, but it's clear to me that they aid in playing the music better in many aspects.)6. Position markers added7. Letter names on white note heads addedTips:1. I imagine E would be played louder.2. Generally, minor chords are played quieter.3. The form is ABA.4. The key change is to the parallel major, A Major. This is a romantic key change (basically Beethoven and after).  5. This piece is beautiful and easy to engrave since it symmetrical. 4 measure phrases. 32 measures fits perfectly on two pages. I say this somewhat jokingly, but the time signature is 32/16/8/4/2 (look into hypermeter). I enjoy when pieces of music are 4 measure phrases, because then the staff lines themselves actually represent true musical phrases. The opposite of this is called upbeat phrasing, which is when a phrase starts in the middle of a measure.

The singable, pentatonic melody is beautiful even in its own simplicity. But when combined with lush harmonies of the teacher duet, this beginner piece becomes a heart-warming show-stopper for recitals, Sunday School, nursing home, and church performances.Teaching Idea: Remembering which hand plays which notes (left and right) can be very challenging for beginning students. The notes for the student part in this arrangement have blue note heads for right hand notes, and green note heads for left hand notes. Purchase a blue and a green athletic wrist band. Put the blue one on the student’s right wrist (because the blue sky is high and the right hand plays the higher notes), and place the green wrist band on the student’s left hand (because the green grass is down low and the hand plays the lower notes.) Then the single three white key notes that the hands must MOVE to play have red note heads.

Dan is a prize-winning composer and arranger, and was the staff arranger for the Countess of Wessex's String Orchestra for many years. danedwardscreative.com This is an arrangement like no other!Pachelbel's Canon is a hugely popular piece, but unfortunately it was not written for the string quartet. The original is for three violins and basso continuo, so this presents quite a few problems when string quartets attempt to play it. - Firstly, the 'viola' part is extraordinarily high, not only making it very difficult to play, but making that one voice stick out much more than the other three in the highest parts of the piece. Usually the high bits are just transposed down an octave but this isn't very satisfying. My solution in this arrangement is to swap the voices of the canon around so that the viola always plays the lowest part. Have a look at the score to see what I mean - the viola part isn't transposed, but it never goes above an E on the A string. - Secondly, the first two bars should have harmony, as there should be a keyboard instrument accompanying the cello. To compensate for this I've added some simple harmony in small note heads at the start, before each canon entry. - Thirdly, the cellist always gets lost in this piece. I know because I am a cellist and I always get stressed out towards the end of this piece. So I've added a reduced-size violin 1 part to the cello part so the cellist can follow along and know exactly when the piece is going to end! Includes a full score (6 pages), and complete set of parts. Violin 1 - 3 pages. Violin 2 - 3 pages. Viola - 2 pages. Cello/ bass - 3 pages.

Don’t worry...we’re going to get through this! Paderewski, we love you, but your hands were just too big. Mélodie has lots of large intervals in the left hand that many pianists can’t play comfortably. But that’s no excuse to give up on a lovely piece of piano music, right?My edition of this piece features helpful fingerings and grayed-out noteheads indicating which notes can be avoided. I’ve also highlighted some places where the right hand can reach down and play the highest note of some of these large chords, with the goal of being faithful to Paderewski’s intentions whenever possible. These places are indicated by my exclusive, ground-breaking green notehead technology, which is frequently seen in my other editions.
