Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - SKU: A0.972650 Composed by James Siddons. Contemporary,Opera,Ragtime. Octavo. 79 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #4898807. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972650). Two Views of Scott Joplin is an exploration of a personal and artistic crisis that Scott Joplin, the King of Ragtime, went through between 1904 and 1906. This crisis was precipitated by the untimely death of Freddie Alexander in September 1904, to whom Joplin had been married only ten weeks. Knowledge of this marriage was lost to history for almost a century until the Joplin scholar Edward A. Berlin discovered the newspaper obituary, which is quoted in the bass solo in Part II, The Obituary of Freddie Alexander. Apparently, Scott Joplin, already inspired by the progressive ideals of Booker T. Washington, saw a path to social and artistic betterment through his love of Freddie, a daughter of a refined family. During this period, Joplin used the title rag less often in his piano-solo works, and nurtured an interest in opera (he had long been active in vaudeville as well as ragtime piano). He seems to have lost his sense of direction in 1905 and 1906, until led by his publisher John Stark to move to New York City in 1907. Once there, apparently growing out of his grief, Joplin studied with an Italian opera singer and composer, composed his folk opera Treemonisha, and composed Wall Street Rag and his other late masterpieces for piano. Joplin died in April 1917 following two years of debilitating illness. Joplin left almost no personal writings, such as letters or diaries. To create an impression of autobiography, Two Views of Scott Joplin consists mostly of words and music written by Scott Joplin, and piano music composed by two close associates, the composer-pianists Louis Chauvin and Scott Hayden. These words come from Treemonisha, from Joplin’s little-remembered vaudeville and parlor songs, and also from text in his sheet-music---copyright notices, publishers’ addresses, titles and subtitles of rags, performance directions. In most cases, selected lyrics are extracted from songs and paired with piano-solo themes. These ingredients are combined in creative ways to express the biographical narrative. Instrumental themes are re-cast as necessary to express their newly-attached lyrics. But in no place can any of the music in Two Views of Scott Joplin be considered an arrangement of a given, intact composition, nor a medley of tunes, nor a theatrical revue. The character development and dialogue found in Scott Joplin’s Struggle with Destiny (Part II, No. 3) is my own biographical interpretation of Joplin, based on known evidence and on his music. The score contains extensive Performance Notes for performing this 16-minute work as a choral work or as a short opera scene.

Small Ensemble - SKU: A0.976717 Composed by Robert Myers. Contemporary,Easter,Sacred. Score and parts. 67 pages. WheatMyer Music #4794639. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976717). It Is Not Death to Die is a new setting of French poet Henri Abraham César Malan's Non, ce n'est pas mourir as translated by George Washington Bethune and adapted for this work. Why this text? It first came to my notice shortly after the passing of Billy Graham, who was known to paraphrase D. L. Moody, Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.Graham's bold proclamation and Malan's poetry motivated me to focus anew on the resurrection, re-remembering it as the pivotal element of the Christian faith. For if there is no resurrection, Paul says in 1 Cor 15, our faith is useless. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead! Unfortunately, singing about heaven has, perhaps, been neglected of recent decades. We seem to have focused more on the already to the detriment of the not yet. But it is important to remember that this life is not all there is! Quoting Paul again, the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Rom 8:18). Yet, if Christ delays, the grim inevitability of our transition into eternity is a certain experience we all face. Malan's poetry so poignantly and eloquently captures this tension that it compelled me to compose a fresh musical setting that attempts to captures the mixture of dread and hope borne out in the acclamation that death is swallowed up in victory! I pray that this setting aids the Church to remember the great hope and promise Christ has granted us: O Death, where is your victory? O Death, where is your sting?_______________________________________________________________________________________________The music opens with a C# diminished chord in a very still and somber texture reflective of grief. The text is introduced with the first of two main motives, a rising 4-note outline of B minor in a triple repetition of It Is Not Death. As each stanza proceeds the music concludes on the second motive, a 5-note descending span of a minor 7th in Bb Lydian. The energy and mood of the music gradually shift over the five stanzas, as the focus moves from this life to the next; the texture thickens, the harmony expands, and the dynamic grows into the music’s pinnacle on reign with You on high! The music closes on a reprise of the opening section, simultaneously mindful of our mortality and our eternity.Available with orchestral (this version) or piano accompaniment, It Is Not Death to Die is a fitting close to the Easter season, or is suitable for Ascension Sunday, a funeral or memorial service, or any time in the church year to remind Christians of the central hope of our faith, eternal life in Christ.Robert MyersS.D.G.Orchestration 2 1 1 1 1 2 2 2 1 1 Timp Glock Perc Mark Tree, Sus Cym, Crash Cym, Snare, Bass Drum, Mid Tom, Triangle, Tam Tam Piano Strings

Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1470559). An arrangement for piccolo and orchestra of the Barbara Allen folk song with many interesting cadences, harmonies and countermelodies. In Scarlet Town where I was born,There was a fair maid dwelling,Made every youth cry, “Well-a-day”,Her name was Barbara Allen. All in the merry month of May,When green buds they were swelling,Young Willy Grove on his death bed lay,For love of Barbara Allen. He sent his man down unto her then,To the town where she was dwelling.“You must come to my master dear,If your name's Barbara Allen.”So slowly, slowly she came up,And slowly she came nigh him,And all she said when there she came,“Young man I think you’re dying.”[“A dying man, no, no,” said he,“One kiss from thee would cure me.”“One kiss from me thou never shalt have,If your poor heart was breaking.”]He turned his face unto the wall,And death was drawing nigh him,“Adieu, adieu, my dear friends all,And be kind to Barbara Allen.”As she was walking o’er the fields,She heard the dead-bell knellin’;And every stroke did seem to say“Unworthy Barbara Allen!”When he was laid dead in his grave,Her heart was struck with sorrow,“Oh mother, mother make my bed,For I shall die tomorrow.”And on her death bed she lay,She begged to be buried by him,And so repented of the day,That she did e’er deny him.“Farewell”, she said, “You virgins all,And shun the fault I fell in.Hence forth take warning by the fall,Of cruel Barbara Allen.”.

Can any among us even dare hope to die at a time and in a place of our choosing, and for a cause in which we so fervently believe? These men were prepared for the enemy; these men were prepared for death; these men were prepared to meet The Lord. The names of William Barrett Travis, Davy Crockett, and James Bowie are known by all. But they fought and died alongside 197 other courageous souls – nameless, but honored nonetheless. Some of the nameless souls were of European heritage, some were of Mexican descent, some were Americans. For those daring and deadly days in San Antonio, all were Texians !R E M E M B E R T H E A L A M O !How can any Texian dare forget ? !

It was recorded by O’Connor and Wynton Marsalis for the album Liberty!. The recording was also used throughout the film documentary produced for PBS, Liberty! The American Revolution. This may very well be the first duet ever written for trumpet and violin. Summarized as a triumph by album notes writer Thomas Fleming, he goes on to characterize the duet by saying Marsalis’ sound echoes the noble sadness of this celebration of the heroic death of British General James Wolfe before Quebec in 1759. The piece turns into a musical gallop, evoking the surging seesaw battle Wolfe’s army fought outside the walls of the fortress city. We have a collaboration between the trumpet wizardry of Wynton Marsalis and Mark O’Connor’s extraordinary virtuosity on the fiddle. The music is suited for advanced levels. Choral Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 4 - SKU: A0.953860 By Digital Recording. By Francis Osentowski, DMA University of North Texas and Music, Francis Osentowski Lyrics, Jerry McElveen. Arranged by Original composition. Contemporary. Score. 6 pages. Francis Osentowski #6097441. Published by Francis Osentowski (A0.953860).  LETTERS FROM A POET IN ITALY. Mvt. III COLOSSEUM This ethereal song combines a mystical setting recalling the deaths of thousands in the Roman Colosseum. While visiting the modern-day site, Jerry McElveen had visions of the screaming crowds while gladiators and others were killed as entertainment. He was upset to see the current graffiti marring the stone walls of the structure.  The piano score and vocal looks difficult...but several performers have not found it to be problematic. It works as a more modern setup for the jazzy closer, DAVID Mvt IV. If the piano intro to Colosseum, seems to lag before the soprano enters...take the second ending on the intro... that will avoid the star singer having to wait too long! All four songs in the Letters from a Poet in Italy cycle are published in this web site. 1. Eighteen in Italy 2. Caregiver 3. Colosseum 4. David.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534000). I. INTROIT II. INTERLUDE III. ALLELUIAS Commissioned by the American Guild of Organists,Albuquerque Chapter,For the Region VII AGO Convention, 2009Performance notes:Indian Earth, after a book of poetry by Santa Fe poet Witter Bynner, explores the mystical cultures and resplendent terrain of the AmericanSouthwest. An underlying tenor ofthis collection is the complex relationship between the earth and humanity, and metaphorically the discordbetween native and colonial peoples. Bynner captures the essence of these relationships in this way:It is the earth itself that hems you round against intruders alien to the earth, that brings you heaven under a shadowy tree, curves heaven toyour arm and lets you lie close to its living thorn. The crown is yours, not theirs. You know the one divinity, the only death, the offering ofthe heart to the cruel earth, the love, the consummation. The three movements of the work progress from a quiet melancholy to exuberance, from darkness to light. Frahm makes use of an architecturalapproach to music composition in this piece, as in the building of an adobe wall brick by brick. Self-contained musical structures, often in four barunits, are symmetrically arranged as a technique of musical development. The final movement, 'Alleluias', is based in part on plainchant tone 6 fromthe Graduale Romanum.

A song for soprano and pianoText by Helen Keller from her Essay Optimism WithinWritten for Ann MossText:Once I knew the depth where no hope was, and darkness lay on the face of all things. Then love came and set my soul free.  Once I knew only darkness and stillness. Now I know hope and joy. Once I fretted and beat myself against the wall that shut me in. Now I rejoice in the consciousness that I can think, act and attain heaven. My life was without past or future; death, the pessimist would say, a consummation devoutly to be wished. But a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness, and my heart leaped to the rapture of living. Night fled before the day of thought, and love and joy and hope came up in a passion of obedience to knowledge. Can anyone who escaped such captivity, who has felt the thrill and glory of freedom, be a pessimist?Darkness cannot shut me in again.
