Timeless Solos is a play on words. The solos in this volume contain no time signatures or bar lines. I did this because I wanted the solos to be very expressive in interpretation yet 'free-form' in structure. The companionrecording presents my interpretation of these works. You may interpret them differently and that is fine! All solos are in notation and tablature. When writing these solos I first envisioned the form as an extended 'cadenza'.However from my earlier trumpet playing days I recalled that especially in the 19th century a cadenza was a momentary break in a solo which gave the performer a chance to dazzle the audience with his or her virtuosity. Thesesolos are not about that. Rather they are a vehicle to give the guitarist an opportunity to move the listener with the performer's expressive ability. I also thought of these solos in the form of a 'chant'. However most chantsare monophonic in form and these solos in various parts present a fairly lush harmonic structure. While the solos were written for a 7 string guitar they may be played successfully on a 6 string guitar. Alternate notes for thosefound on the 7th string are shown in the tablature part. Also the solo Peace is written in Dropped D tuning and makes little use of the 7th string pedal tones. The solos are contemplative in nature and provide ample opportunityfor individual expression and interpretation. I hope you enjoy playing and performing these works.

Traditional Scottish and Irish tunes were transformed by the African rhythms of banjo players which in turninfluenced popular music and led to ragtime jazz and blues. The amount of folk music in America is staggering. The nineteenth century gave birth to many unique American styles and its songs are an important part of our musicalheritage. Even today quite a few of the tunes in this collection will seem very familiar. Written primarily in standard notation the exceptions being those tunes in altered tunings which logically appear in tablature only.

of Guitar Solos-Laurindo Almeida (1917-1995) belongs to an elite group of Brazilian/American guitarists who by composing important works for the guitar reinstated the instrument in his native country as worthy of serious musical study.Stylistically his compositions synthesize his classical background Afro-Brazilian rhythms traditional Brazilian music and American jazz. This collection presents Almeida's solos preserving the original left and right handfingerings. The fingering is unique and tells us something about his skills as a professional guitarist. Select 'Contradanzas Habaneras' by 19th century Cuban composer Manuel Saumell (1817-1870). Saumell is known as the 'Father of nationalism in Cuban music'. In more than 50 Contradanzas Habaneras Saumell never repeated himself forwithin those 8 or 16-bar phrases he was capable of astounding rhythmic and melodic invention. This group of contradanzas were originally written for the piano and arranged here for flute and guitar by Elias Barreiro. Presented instandard notation only with separate pull-out sections for guitar and flute.
