This volume brings together 47 independent settings of the Gloria and Credo from the period c.1400-40, most of which have never been published before. Nineteen of these settings are complete works preserved largely in continental manuscripts, the remainder fragmentary settings preserved in insular sources. They include works both by leading composers of the period (Forest, Power and Pycard) and by minor figures (Daye, Humfray, Knyf and Markham), as well as three settings that are here attributed conjecturally (to Byttering, Rowlard and Soursby). This collection includes examples of the main compositional styles and techniques of English liturgical polyphony of the late Middle Ages, and is intended to complement the Sanctus and Agnus dei settings of EECM 47.

Comp lemented by Professor Strohm's facsimile edition of the entire source by the University of Chicago Press, the publication of eight Mass settings from the Lucca Choirbook is a signal contribution to our understanding of the dissemination of English music in fifteenth-century Europe. Only two are ascribed, to Walter Frye and Henricus Tik, but the insular provenance of the music is confirmed on grounds of style, repertoire and performance procedure. None of the Masses is preserved complete, but three are unica, and three others have been completed from concordances reflecting the significant influence of native-born composers on European music at this time.

This set of voluntaries for organ manuals forms a triptych for liturgical use. They may be played as a set in order, or individually per the performer’s discretion. They were composed for a modest two manual organ. The voluntaries, reminiscent of the Vierne or Litaize ‘liturgical preludes’, are not based on any pre-existing tunes. Published by: Zimbel Press.

Toda y Monteverdi's Selva morale et spirituale (1641) stands entirely in the shadow of his famous Vespers 1610. The editions from 1610 and 1641 both include music for the Mass and Vespers, but each of these collections was composed under much different circumstances during Monteverdi's lifetime. If the works of 1610 are a bold combination of traditional compositional techniques and avant garde music, which were intended by this weary Court Composer at Mantua as an application portfolio for a new job, the 1641 collection is the only church music by the mature Monteverdi which was published after almost thirty years in his position as Music Director of St. Mark's Cathedral: the latter, a kind of best of collection from his many years of experience as a church musician. In Venice the composer had not only a fabulous, but a large ensemble at his disposal (finally, about 35 singers, alone)! The big effect in this music is the combination of soloistic and weighty tutti sections, it makes the music, with its clearly defined sections and, for the most part homophonic choral passages more easily performable than the Vespers for today's choirs. The new edition, comprised initially of three volumes, also includes those works from the Selva Morale (a Mass and two Magnificats) which have already been published by Carus, as well as all further liturgical compositions for use in the church. Salmi II contains the additional settings of the multiple settings of the psalms and also the psalm Memento (each of the first of the multiple settings of the psalms are to be found in the Salmi I volume). The edition is based on the methods employed in the much acclaimed Carus edition of the Vespers: - It contains a detailed foreword with suggestions for notation, scoring and for the liturgical use of individual compositions. - For the present edition four of the five surviving printed copies, as well as contemporary manuscript were consulted. Facsimiles illustrate special characteristics of the edition of 1641. A Critical Report makes clear all of the editorial decisions made in the edition. - All of the pieces are printed untransposed and using the original note values. - All of the pieces are available in single editions with complete performance material. - Vocal scores of all works with obbligato instruments facilitate rehearsal. - Instrumental parts for collaparte accompaniment of tutti-sections (including text underlay).

The three oratorios, the chorale cantatas, the large psalm settings, Lobgesang and other Mendelssohn sacred works with orchestra are famous, last but not least, on account of the variety and beauty of their choral settings. In the 19th century it was already common practice to arrange suitable movements for choir and organ, and to perform them in concert. This new choral collection makes available a wide selection and variety of movements especially suited for sacred services. All of the choral movements are based on biblical texts (most of them from the Psalter), on chorale settings or liturgical texts - these offer a wide range of uses during the church yearand within the framework of the liturgy. Score available separately - see item CA.410500.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) began composition of his Great Mass in C minor, K. 427/417a in 1782 as a promise to himself to write a major work for his native Salzburg. This period was shortly after he had moved to Vienna in 1781, and Mozart wrote in a letter that he made the promise before having married Constanze, a decision which his father Leopold disapproved, though he only really began the work after the marriage, completing all that he did in 1783. The work remained uncompleted from the sense of a liturgical mass, missing some of the Credo movements, all of the Agnus Dei, and parts of the Sanctus and the Benedictus, and Mozart called it a half a mass in a letter to his father. Despite this, all that was completed was performed at a liturgical mass on October 23, 1783, at St. Peter's Church in Salzburg during Mozart and Constanze's three-month sojourn there to introduce Constanze to the family. It is believed that Mozart borrowed from other works to make it complete for a liturgical performance, and it is thought likely that Constanze sang the high first soprano solo part. The work remained in this state until German musicologist Alois Schmitt's work to complete the mass was published in 1902. The Schmitt edition became the standard edition throughout the 20th century. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.4(1st sub Tpt in C).0: Timp: Org: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo SSTB: Mx Chor.
