These Fantasias are part of a collection of Twelve Fantasias for Viola da Gamba Solo, originally published in 1735 but considered lost until rediscovered in 2015. Mr. Sauer has beautifully transcribed them for unaccompanied Euphonium and are appropriate for advanced performers. His editorial dynamics have been included as suggestions. Each of the Three Fantasias has contrasting fast and slow movements.

MARS HILL FANTASIA was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to Mars Hill College (now Mars Hill University), as part of the festivities celebrating their Sesquicentennial in 2006. The work was commissioned by their Low Brass instructor, and my friend, Dr. James Sparrow. The university is located right in the heart of the beautiful mountain area of Western North Carolina, and I wrote a work which both celebrates the long and distinguished history of Mars Hill University and its lovely mountain setting. The work is scored for two combined ensembles -- an 8-part low brass ensemble of trombones, euphoniums, and tubas, and an 8-part percussion ensemble of both mallet and non-pitched percussion instruments. The music contains rich, sonorous, and joyful gestures, with stentorian fanfares, resonant chords, and lyrical melodies. It was given a truly exciting and festive premiere in October 2006 by the combined low brass and percussion ensembles of the music department of Mars Hill.MARS HILL FANTASIA was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to Mars Hill College (now Mars Hill University), as part of the festivities celebrating their Sesquicentennial in 2006.The work was commissioned by their Low Brass instructor, and my friend, Dr. James Sparrow. Fant asia Nova is a suite comprising two concert marches and a slow, middle movement that derives its themes from both marches. Ragtime (composed in early September, 1978) is a new from old sort of piece. Although its tunefulness and harmonies have an old-fashioned character, its structure, development, and orchestration are unusual for a march. In the chorale section (measures 111 - 148) the band director must be very careful in balancing, for each of the elements must come through. More important is that the audience be brought up by this section -- filled with a joyous exaltation; great attention must be paid to sonority and the band must play earnestly. Ragtime stands on its own and may be performed separately. Dreams (composed in late September, 1978) is the traditional march of the two. It is very closely modeled (in structure only) to Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever. It even includes a tricky piccolo solo, although the accompaniment has a chorale texture, almost like a school alma mater. This march has a patriotic, inspirational sound, because it was composed for the town of Irondequoit, New York -- for a Town March contest held by the town's community concert band. It did not, so far as I know, become the town's march; one can hear the name, Irondequoit, throughout the Trio, for every turn of the melody (in fact, each group of four notes) fits the accent pattern (Ih-RON-dih-kwoit) of the town's name. Parade stands on its own as a complete work and may be performed separately. Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 6 Flutes, 2 1st & 2nd Oboes, 1 English Horn, 1 Eb Clarinet, 3 1st Bb Clarinet, 3 2nd Bb Clarinet, 3 3rd Bb Clarinet, 1 Eb Alto Clarinet, 2 Bb Bass Clarinet, 1 Eb Contrabass Clarinet (optional), 2 1st & 2nd Bassoons, 1 Contrabassoon (optional), 1 1st Eb Alto Saxophone, 1 2nd Eb Alto Saxophone, 1 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 1 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 1st Bb Cornets, 3 2nd Bb Cornets, 3 3rd Bb Cornets, 1 1st Horn in F, 1 2nd Horn in F, 2 3rd and 4th Horns in F, 2 1st Trombones, 2 2nd Trombones, 2 3rd Trombones, 1 Euphonium (Treble Clef), 2 Euphonium (Bass Clef), 4 Tuba, 1 String Bass, 1 Timpani (Triangle), 5 Percussion.

Brilliantly scored and cleverly constructed, this treatment of the familiar Christmas Carol Good King Wenceslas is symphonic in scope and breadth. As usual with Thurston, the harmonies re sophisticated and rhythmic interest is maintained with shifting meters and accents. Every player seems to get a variant of the tune to play and the scoring a is expert and witty throughout. Duration: 4’20 Keys: Eb, Ab Range: Trumpet – A; Horn – F; Trombone – G.

Omagg io was commissioned by Steven Mead in celebration of his 60th birthday and in memory of his father, Rex. He gave the premiere of the brass band version in Rome in March 2022, accompanied by the Italian Brass Band conducted by Filippo Cangiamilla. The concertband premiere took place on 6th July that year as part of the 2022 Spanish International Tuba Euphonium Conference, accompanied by the Banda municipal de música de Málaga. The concerto is set in 3 continuous movements, which are united by a recurring syncopated interval of a fifth. The first movement, FANTASIA, opens with this motive accompanying an extended monologue for the soloist. This is followed by a lengthy bridge passage by the piano, which is eventually joined by the soloist, who guides the music back to the opening soliloquy, leading to an energetic central section. This develops until the opening material again returns to introduce the second movement, BALLAD, which revolves around an expressive melody for the soloist, interspersed by accompanied cadenzas. The thirdmovement, THE KING TRIUMPHANT, pays homage to Steven’s late father, Rex, and its title alludes both to Rex's name ('Rex' being Latinfor 'king') as well as his love of Eric Ball’s Salvationist masterpiece, The Kingdom Triumphant. The finale is an energetic tour-de-force featuring an acrobatic 6/8 melody, which is interrupted twice by the magnificent hymn tune, Helmsley, which Ball uses so effectively in The Kingdom Triumphant. A galloping coda brings the work to a close.

Silen t Midwinter’s Noel is a fantasia on three traditional Christmas tunes. The introduction of the piece, an Adagietto, alternates between melodic statements of In The Bleak Midwinter and Silent Night. The second main section of the piece, an Allegro, primarily juxtaposes The First Noel and Silent Night. The tempo markings throughout the score are mostly suggestions. The conductor may choose to deviate within five to ten clicks in either direction on their metronome. During the Adagietto, the conductor may also choose to draw out harmonic cadences for increased tension and resolution. The piece is scored in Eb and F major to allow younger performers to achieve excellent intonation. Performers should strive to produce characteristic sounds, especially when playing melodic statements. The tunes within this piece are all carols, and should be played as such. The conductor may choose to teach the performers how to sing the carols for added educational value. Lyrics for the carols are included below:Silent NightSilent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is brightRound yon virgin mother and child!Holy infant, so tender and mild,Sleep in heavenly peace!Sleep in heavenly peace! In the Bleak MidwinterIn the bleak midwinterfrosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone:snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,in the bleak midwinter, long ago.The First NoelThe First Noel the angel did sayWas to certain poor shepherdsin fields as they lay;In fields as they lay, keeping their sheep,On a cold winter's night that was so deep.Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.
