Since most of the bands competing in the 4th Section of the Dutch National Championships have many young players, this piece is stylistically youthful— especially in the opening and closing sections. An arpeggio pattern appears numerous times in all registers and is the basic musical element of the main melody, alternating with a second theme that has a slightly different melodic character. The middle section is conceived like a chorale, introduced and developed stepwise: firstly with short patterns and gradually in increasingly long snippets, until it’s played in its glorious entirety at measure 216. No real solo passages are included but rather small chambercombinations, thus offering the opportunity to various players to display their technical and performance skills. The finale recaptures musical material from the first section of the piece and provides a majestic conclusion. Vermits de meeste bands die aan het jaarlijkse NBK (Nederlandse Brass Band Kampioenschappen) deelnemen veel jonge muzikanten in hun rangen hebben, is dit werk overwegend jeugdig van karakter - vooral in de hoekdelen. Een arpeggio-figuur vormt de basis van het hoofdthema en het verschijnt in alle registers. Een tweede muzikaal gegeven dialogeert met die hoofdmelodie: samen stofferen ze de openingssectie van het werk. Dan volgt een koraalmatig middendeel: stapsgewijs worden korte en nadien steeds langere melodische fragmenten aan elkaar geregen tot de koraal in haar volle pracht integraal weerklinkt aan maat 205. Echte solopassages komen niet voor in dit werk, maar viadiverse kleine kamermuziek-combinaties wordt aan diverse musici de mogelijkheid geboden hun muzikale kwaliteiten te etaleren. In de laatste beweging worden een aantal muzikale bouwstenen van het begindeel hernomen en verder uitgewerkt om dan te besluiten in een majestueus slot.

Stephen Bullas highly descriptive work was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, which took place between the 19th February and 26th March 1945.Casualties on both the American and Japanese sides were horrendously high before the famous image of the raising of the flag on top of Mount Suribachi signalled the end of one of the most significant and terrifying Pacific conflicts of the SecondWorld War.The work received its first performance by the brass choir of the U.S. Marine Band at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. and is divided into four programmatic sections.The first portrays the sense of anticipation before conflict (Prologue), before the arduous journey to the scene of the battle (Approach by Sea) is followed by introspection and prayer featuring the hymn tune Melita (Chorale Prayer), andfinally, the hostile confrontation itself (Engagement).There are frequent references to the Marines Hymn and the US National Anthem, particularly in the closing bars, depicting the ultimate raising of the American flag.

The Spider's Web is a metaphor for danger, uncertainty and risk. Throughout the piece moments of danger contrast with moments of tranquility at certain points these two ideas merge and in others they battle against one another. In this piece which requires a lot of technical skills for the players, the composer moves unexpectedly from moments of peacefulness to situations of threat and danger. An impressive, versatile and truly spectacular piece!The Spider's Web (het spinnenweb) is een metafoor voor gevaar, onzekerheid en risico. Door het hele werk heen contrasteren momenten van dreiging met momenten van rust op bepaalde punten komen deze twee ideeën samen en op andere plekken gaan ze de strijd met elkaar aan. In dit werk, dat veel technische vaardigheid van de spelers vraagt, gaan momenten van vredige kalmte onverwacht over in situaties van dreiging en gevaar. Een indrukwekkend, veelzijdig en spectaculair werk!The Spider's Web (Das Spinnennetz) ist eine Metapher für Gefahr, Unsicherheit und Risiko. Während des Stücks stehen Momente der Gefahr im Kontrast zu Momenten der Ruhe an bestimmten Stellen verschmelzen diese beiden Ideen miteinander, an anderen kämpfen sie gegeneinander. In diesem Stück, das den Spielern viel technisches Können abverlangt, bewegt sich der Komponist unerwartet von Momenten der Ruhe zu Situationen der Bedrohung und Gefahr. Ein beeindruckendes, vielseitiges und wirklich spektakuläres Stück!The Spider's Web (La toile d’araignée) symbolise danger, incertitude et risque. Tout au long de la pièce, des moments de danger contrastent avec des passages tranquilles certains endroits, ces deux idées se fusionnent et, ailleurs, elles luttent l’une contre l’autre. Dans une œuvre qui exige de grandes compétences techniques, le compositeur alterne, de manière inattendue, entre moments de tranquillité et passages menaçants et inquiétants. Une pièce éloquente, flexible et franchement spectaculaire !

‘Jubilant Prelude’ is an orchestration of the ‘Preludium over Psalm 150’ originally composed for organ by Toon Hagen. Since 1998 Toon Hagen has been organ-player of the ‘Grote or Sint Michaëlskerk’ in Zwolle (the Netherlands). He has written several ‘contemporary’ compositions for organ.‘Jubilant Prelude’ has a capricious character by the use of irregular measures and its many measure changes. The structure of the Prelude is that of a fugue and is based on motives from the psalm.After the first climax, which is both dynamic and harmonic, the theme in the Andante Jubiloso is clearly audible and it is alternated with erratic motifs. Tension increases until at last the psalm itself isheard in all its glory. The melody of the psalm sounds as a cantus firmus in tenor register, with motifs in ornamentation for saxophones, bugles and trumpets. The finale, like the prelude is capricious and vehement.The instrumentation for brassband was made by Dirk Annema. It is particularly colourful and has a surprising role for the percussion section. ‘Jubilant Prelude’ is een orkestbewerking van het oorspronkelijk voor orgel geschreven ‘Preludium over Psalm 150’ van de hand van Toon Hagen. Sinds 1998 is Toon Hagen als organist verbonden aan de Grote of Sint Michaëlskerk te Zwolle.Hij heeft meerdere ‘eigentijdse’ composities voor orgel op zijn naam staan.‘Jubilant Prelude’ krijgt door het gebruik van onregelmatige maatsoorten en vele maatwisselingen een grillig karakter.De opbouw van de Prelude is fugatisch,en is gebaseerd op motieven van de psalm.Na de eerste climax, dynamisch en harmonisch, is op het Andante Jubiloso het thema duidelijk hoorbaar, en wordt afgewisseld met grillige motieven. De spanning neemt toe totdat de psalmin volle glorie volgt. De melodie van de psalm klinkt als een cantus firmus in het tenor register, met een omspeling in saxofoons, bugels en trompetten.Het slot is net als het voorspel grillig en heftig.De instrumentatie voor brassbandis van Dirk Annema. Deze is bijzonder kleurrijk met een verrassend gebruik van het slagwerk.
