Richard Hageman (1881-1966) was a born into a family of musicians. As a pianist, he performed concerts from the age of six, and his mastery of this instrument is evident in the intricate accompaniment of this piece. After coming to America, (originally as accompanist to touring French singer Yvette Guilbert), he worked for a period of years as a conductor and pianist for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. It was during this period of time that he composed Do Not Go, My Love for solo voice, originally dedicating it to the operatic tenor, George Hamlin. Hageman's later career included work in Hollywood, first as a conductor, but later as a film-score composer and actor. Do Not Go, My Love is well-known among classical soloists, and many recordings exist. The SSA version of this American standard brings a vocal classic to younger singers who might not yet possess the dexterity to perform the original solo. Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was an Indian polymath; someone who possesses deep knowledge and understanding of many disparate subjects. Tagore's expertise included the visual arts, music, and poetry. Tagore won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, contributing to his receiving knighthood from King George V in 1915, but Tagore renounced his knighthood after the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. There are five Tagore museums in Bangladesh and three in India; at least three universities bear his name. Do Not Go, My Love is taken from The Gardener, a collection of poems translated from Bengali by Tagore and published in 1915. Number 34 in the collection, and taken by itself, the poem might be interpreted as someone watching over the deathbed of a lover or child; however, the larger narrative woven through The Gardener suggests a romantic relationship being clung to by the speaker.  .Richard Hageman (1881–1966) was a born into a family of musicians. Zoltán Kocsis (1952 - 2016) was not just a phenomenal pianist. He was also regarded as a musical 'polymath' whose genius embraced the activities of a composer, conductor, editor, instrumentalist, and arranger. In the last capacity, he added some 150 works to symphonic, chamber, song and piano repertoire. He gladly adapted music of the turn of the 20th century, as appears from his transcriptions of Richard Strauss, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Enescu, and above all, Debussy. (Many of these are distributed by Editio Musica Budapest.) 'In Debussy's case, (...) I was always interested in works that offered possibilities beyond the bounds of the piano, possibilities for orchestration.Just as with Liszt it was often possible to see that certain of his works had been written for piano for publication purposes, so with Debussy it is clear that mainly his song accompaniments exceeded the bounds of possibility for the piano,' Kocsis stated in one interview. Perhaps that recognition also encouraged him to arrange the popular piano work Valse romantique (1890) for clarinet and piano. The arrangement superbly pinpoints the sensitive, almost ingratiating tunefulness of the Waltz, adding a piece that sounds great and is rewarding to perform to the clarinet repertoire.

Sometimes profundity emerges through simplicity. Composer Matthew Emery specializes in making musical statements that carry all the harmonic weight of a divisi choir, while using only four voice parts. This meditative piece matches his musical artistry with the wisdom of polymath Rabindranath Tagore. Sing it through on sounds without words, then add the text, and you will be transported.

With Adagietto Jacob de Haan demonstrates his ability to write in all kinds of styles. A sense of pure calm emanates from the flowing main melody. The tasteful orchestration fully supports the harmonic suspense as the piece progresses towards a fantastic climax at the end.

English-German-French-Dutch.
The Last Friend of Napoleon is based on a true piece of Dutch history. In October 1813, when Napoleon was beaten after his unsuccessful Russian campaign, the French withdrew from the Netherlands. At the beginning of 1814, the whole country had been liberated except for the town of Delfzijl, still occupied by French troops. This programmatic work is about political and military stubbornness, chasing dreams, and about love always following its own unequalled way. Being one of the most acknowledged composers of today, Dirk Brossé has created an epic work that depicts a dramatic story, using the full range of the symphonic band resulting in challenging brass passages, a widerange of percussion and a lot of strong, beautiful and melodic material. The Last Friend of Napoleon is gebaseerd op een waargebeurd stukje Nederlandse geschiedenis. The Last Friend of Napoleon est basé sur une histoire vraie néerlandaise.
