Heureusement sa rencontre avec Richard von Mühlfeld clarinettiste du célèbre orchestre de la cour de Meiningen le détourna de ce projet et l?incita dès 1891 à composer le trio avec clarinette op. 114 ainsi que le quintette avec clarinette op. 115 ? deux des ?uvres les plus extraordinaires qui soient parmi le répertoire de cet instrument. Les premières exécutions publiques eurent lieu à Berlin et un peu plus tard à Vienne et furent couronnées d?un tel succès que Joseph Joachim désigna le quintette avec clarinette comme l?une des meilleures ?uvres jamais composées par Brahms. Comme toujours la présente édition urtext deséditions Henle a donné lieu à l?analyse approfondie de toutes les sources pertinentes. for Clarinet in A and Piano-This piece was one of Brahms mature chamber works written in 1891. It is regarded by many as one of his finest chamber works and as a worthy successor to Mozart's work in the same genre. This piece is full of warmth and emotion and is a welcome addition to any clarinettists repertoire.

Sonatas op.120 for Clarinet and Piano-In 1894 Johannes Brahms asked the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld to visit him during his beloved summer sojourn in Ischl adding “It would be really wonderful if you brought your B flat Clarinet with you andif you were in no great hurry” – for the two Sonatas Op. 120 were waiting to be rehearsed. The first performances were given privately directly afterwards and the press enthusiastically reported: “Thesonatas [...] are wonderful and will cause a great sensation”. These were the last chamber pieces Brahms wrote before his death and are considered two of the great masterpieces in the Clarinet repertoire.

This volume presents keyboard works and solos songs by Johannes Brahms arranged for solo clarinet with piano accompaniment. These nine works have been carefully chosen to stay within the abilities of the intermediate levelclarinetist. In most pieces the clarinet part makes only brief exxtensions into the altissimo register emphasizing instead notes in the lower two registers.
