Ramp was commissioned by clarinetist Gleyton Pinto at the University of Colorado - Boulder during the Fall of 2023. He had recently acquired a new bass clarinet and planned to record an album of new works into the winter months. This was my first non-piano solo work in decades, and the challenge of writing such a work never escaped my acknowledgment. As these four pages progress, the music tries to achieve higher and even higher perches through twists and turns, different genres, and varied extended techniques, until finally the player reaches the zenith atop a culminating arpeggio. Ramp is a piece of virtuosity for aspiring musicians, lasting 3-4 minutes.

Duo Concertante, Op. 351 by Darius Milhaud was composed in 1956 for the Paris Conservatoire Contest. Many influences can be recognised in this piece: from the Provence where he was born, to jazz and other melodies of SouthAmerica. Lasting approximately 7 minutes, Duo Concertante, Op. 351 is started by a fanfare with a strong energy reminiscent of the South of France, followed by a simple and moderate clarinet partly joined by piano chords. Theinitial theme is then repeated one last time for the finale. Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. He was also part of the Les Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz. His opus list ended at443.

Composed by M. Dautremer for the Paris Conservatoire contest, Story and Impromptu is a piece for Bb clarinet and piano accompaniment. Dedicated to Auguste Perier, Professor at the Conservatoire, and inspired from Page d?Exil, this piece requires advanced skills to be executed perfectly. Starting as a recitation and lasting approximately 6 minutes, the melodious piece features a cadenza and is divided as per below: 1. Recitative 2. Moderato 3. Cadenza 4. Largo. Mastering breathing technique and the accidentals is quite important for this work, which will demonstrate all your abilities during a contest. The book feature score and parts. M. Dautremer (1906-1978) was a French musician and pedagogue. He was director of the Conservatoire in Nancy and conductor for the Symphonic Orchestra of the city.

“Composed by Giacomo Miluccio (1928-1999), Rhapsody is a piece for Solo Clarinet lasting three minutes. Really melodious yet quite slow, it requires an advanced level (8, 9) and some strong technique and skills. This melodious piece, starting Passionale, with a part Scherzando followed by a Tranquillo one, is using the high range of the instruments. It finishes A Tempo with a morendo sound. The work features numerous accidentals, some opportunity of improvisation and some long phrases for which the player will need to master their breathing skills. It is a really nice work to play in recitals and can also be used for contests. ”.

Following on from Starter Studies, this collection generally contains longer pieces suitable for the developing young musician. Specifically tailored for each instrument, Skilful Studies introduces the concept of phrasing by suggesting suitable breathing points and takes the player into new keys with extended instrumental ranges.
